A Message for Obama Detractors

Recommended Posts

If you do not support Barack Obama and his policies, that is your business. If you feel Barack Obama is unfit to be the President due to his lack of experience, that is fine as well and your opinion.

But, if you listened to Barack Obama's speech tonight and you STILL disagree that the man has the best interests of the nation in his heart, then I am afraid you are blinded by your own hate. He gave one of the most inspirational and moving speeches that this country has ever witnessed.

I hope that those who disagree with Obama's policies can at least acknowledge that he has a pure heart and will put this country first whenever he makes a decision as a leader. Unfortunately, there are still those out there who believe that Obama is on some secret, evil mission to turn America into a Communist nation and destroy it, and there is probably no helping them.

I, on the other hand, believe that we have entered into a new age of hope in America. We no longer have a President who is interested in personal gain or profit for himself and his friends. In two months, a man will take office as President of the United States with the genuine desire to help the country he loves. That is more important than experience, that is more important than race or creed, that is more important than anything.

The right man was elected president tonight. History will bear this out.

Dude - you are a lemming.

I'm not saying you are wrong or right, you're just a lemming. It's rhetoric. A speech. Words that were spoken into the evening air and disappeared just as quickly. It came off as a stump speech. The problem is that Obama has NO history of backing up those words. In fact, he has the one of the most partisan voting records in the Senate - when he actually decided to cast a yea or nay vote. So, in fact, his scant history speaks against everything he said.

So, what is in Obama's heart? I don't know. But you sure as heck don't know either.

I say give him a chance- be skeptical if you need to, but he is no longer a democrat senator, he is an american president elect (I hope)

If that speech was not genuine, then Barack Obama deserves the academy award for Best Actor.

My sentiments exactly. Have your doubts, and keep him under intense scrutiny, the latter being your democratic duty. But until he does something as president to betray your faith, don't turn your back just yet. Having NO familial ties to US aristocracy, the slate is clean with this one. We'll all just have to wait and see.

Ambiguous rhetoric is effective because it is just that - ambiguous. "Change" can mean anything to anybody. Hell, I want change too! Was he talking to me? I doubt it.

He has something like a 97% voting record with his party. Seriously. But he talks about uniting people and suckers lap it up like it is worth enough to buy a cup of coffee at StarBucks. It is freaking words. Words from a politician. Is there anything more worthless in America?

Well, I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, even politicians. One of my favorite concepts of America is innocent til proven guilty, which also means to me that we should trust a person until that person gives us a reason not to trust him. If we show a lack of faith in our elected officials without giving them a chance to prove themselves, it just shows cynicism.

I, for one, trust Barack to lead us in the right direction. If he ends up betraying that trust, so be it, but for now I'm optimistic.

Oh man, can't we all just be happy. It's over, he's our man.
He's your man...That being said I hope he does well, very well. I just don't see it happening. I hope I'm proven wrong. Some of his proposed policies scare the crap out of me but hopefully he'll have some more experienced people giving him good advice.

sarcasm <off>

Seriously, though- I like the way Sage put it- innocent until proven guilty. Why not throw caution to the wind and have high hopes for the guy? Are you afwaid to get your wittle heart bwoken?

Ya I know! McCain supporters booed their president during his speech, Alaska just elected a convicted felon. WTF is wrong with republicans, next thing you know, they'll be burning flags.

You're thinking of law and order, young SATM. America actually has a rich tradition of distrusting anyone who seeks to govern over others, i.e. of seeing them as guilty until proven innocent (only to be vindicated through the process of reelection). Our entire Constitution is dripping with cynicism toward power-grabbing politicians. And American history has long proven voter cynicism to be a very good thing. For example, many who voted Bush Sr. in 1988 should not have believed him when he said, "read my lips: no new taxes." Also, those who voted Bush, Jr. in 2000 might have wished that he had stuck to his "humble foreign policy" instead of trying to establish democracy in Iraq.

I choose not to trust Obama when he states that only those who make $250K/year or more will see tax increases. Why? Because fundamentally I'm a cynic, but also because his VP running mate has been on record as suggesting the tax increase boundary should really be $120K/year. I also choose not to trust Obama's vague commitment to governing from the center when his brief Senate voting record was to the left of that unapologetic socialist, Bernie Sanders. Unlike you, I don't tend to look into Obama's eyes and see his good soul. All I see is another self-aggrandizing politician seeking an all-too-common grab for personal glory...this time via a uniquely strong disdain for the (former) American tradition of the free market.

The same way Bill Clinton did virtually every time he opened his mouth?

Dude, seriously. There's a reason "actions not words" is a phrase that exists. When President Obama increases the size of government and rips away even more individual freedom, you'll be lapping it up like mother's milk.

Only politicians are allowed to create bigger problems trying to solve problems they've already created.

And the American public bought it... hook, line, and sinker.

No one who I know has said Obama cannot give a good speech. Indeed, his speech last night was epic-like. He looked presidential. He looked sincere. But that is what he's known for -- giving great speeches.

He is the president-elect now. So he has my respect now. I will give him a chance, to an extent. But there are points on his platform I strongly disagree with, and if he acts on those points, I will not support those moves.

First and foremost, if he cuts and runs in Iraq, he will lose any respect I have for him.

We cannot lose the war.

I am looking to organize a march on the White House the day after Obama is inaugurated. We must stand united and speak loudly to show we will not accept a surrender in Iraq. We cannot allow the sacrifices made by our service members and their families go for naught.

Please, PM me today if you will help me put this together or if you want more info as plans develop. I am well connected in the military and veterans communities. This will happen; I hope you will be part of it.
