Gig is up for Brady he had been figured out Josh is on the pocket for 4 seconds when he drops back watch his head he is looking at 4 places no one is open the only thing downfield is when he is running for his life and coverage breaks down. If we had the Bengals OL we would be 2 and 7 our WR situation is unacceptable... not as bad as our Run Defense situation which is biblically bad but pretty bad.

Too many NFL front offices and coaching staffs are too clever for their own good.

 

Building a team around someone as talented as Josh Allen should be pretty easy.  Don't overthink it.

 

I still remember when I was younger, watching the crazy hype for Michael Vick when he came out of college.  He was supposed to revolutionize the game.  And he probably had the talent to do that.  But instead, the Falcons spent years trying to turn him into a West Coast offense pocket passer like Steve Young.  The belief at the time was that QBs couldn't possibly succeed unless you forced them into that mold.

 

Looking at Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, etc. today, I often wonder what would have happened if Atlanta just used common sense and built around his strengths.

The reason he isn't running is because every defensive line is keeping a spy or spies on him and focusing on containing him.  Whenever he does take off the defenders close on him fast and its usually a loss of yardage.  Its similar to way we try to play Lamar and the way we just played Mahomes.  Seems to be why rolling to his right isn't a cure all this year.  And since our WRs cant get open, nobody is scared of an 8 second scramble drill.

Shakir is basically a gadget WR. A really good one at that. He has his own separation issues like the rest of our WR room when he's asked to run normal slot routes. And he hasn't looked quite as slippery to me this year. Shakir last year would have scored on that 2PC he missed against Miami. I think the ankle sprain is probably still bothering him a bit.

 

Not that I blame Shakir in the slightest for this offensive performance. It's not his fault he's being asked to do things he can't do well and defenses are able to give his gadget plays extra focus. That all falls on the GM.

Also the field is more condensed with the tight splits and lack of wideouts,

I wonder if there has ever been a HC who missed the playoffs after having an MVP QB the season before. If not, Sean could be the first. Put it up there with 13 seconds and handing the OC job to a rookie OC with Josh and Diggs in their primes.

That's what I don't get. For years everyone was saying McDermott has a big say in roster construction. Now when that the roster isn't great it's Beanes fault. 

I fully believe this is the type of team McDermott has always wanted. A run heavy offense that controls the clock and limits turnovers.

We also had Diggs in his prime. That helped. 

It helped tremendously.

Even so, the year before Diggs arrived we had late career John Brown with 72 catches and almost 15 yards per catch. Was John Brown at 29 really that much better than Curtis Samuel at 29?

Good point and food for thought.  I you're right about this being what McD has always wanted in an offense, and I think you are, then if the O doesn't improve McD will be tossing Allen under the bus and then things will get real interesting, and not in a good way.

Yep 1000 percent this is the kind of offence he wanted.

 

He hated Dabolls pass aggressive approach which is one of the reasons those guys didn't get along

It isn't IMO.

 

Coleman has regressed, and Palmer/Moore have not matched the impact of Hollins/cooper.  Shakir has remained the same and Kincaid has improved.

 

Another part of last seasons passing game that has been mysteriously absent this season are passes to Cook & Johnson.  Johnson was particularly dangerous catching the ball down field last season.  This season the only shot to him was the TD pass he dropped against the Ravens.
