There was an article in the paper maybe the Buffalo News where Landon Jackson was quoted as saying something along the lines of one of the other players told him. You're likely not going to always remember the play or your assignment or even hear the call right, just go with your gut and play fast. A rookie going with his gut can be a problem. how do i know? i don't know. i haven't played in McD's defense in at least 37 years. but, i can tell you what other players have said and analysts have said. i can watch the game with my eyes and see a lot of stunts, movement, people shouting, etc. it's complex and layered which exposes a lot of problems when one part of the chain breaks. 8 hours ago, Thurman#1 said: Yeah, um, Sal doesn't do that. BuffaloBill Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Sad because it was a great set up for Jackson. Jackson looked like he was confused and in slow motion on the play. Hopefully he ascends the learning curve quickly because the Bills need him. Quote

Ethan in Cleveland Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Very odd. Because Jackson drops into coverage which is pretty rare for a DE to do. Either it was some ultracrazy defense where Bernard is actually supposed to be the contain or Jackson didn't know the play. I mean how the hell can it be that hard to know the play book??? There can't be 5 defensive plays in the entire playbook that has the DE drop into coverage, and he thought that was the call??? Quote

Defensively, with the exception of Bosa, Thompson and the two rookie DL, everyone has experience playing in his system. The constant excuses about guys not understanding the system is worn out. It stills burns me that the Bills let Houston covert a 4th and long by playing so soft in coverage and I don’t need to stay anything about his defensive scheme with 13 seconds. Point being these same themes continue today and all to often McDermott can’t make the necessary adjustments. It’s beyond maddening how bad our pass rush is no matter who is on the DL! Year after year, we constantly hear about players playing out of position as we get exploited in the running game. Or even better, our DL continues to get stonewalled by teams with 3 or 4 starters out. For all the insane amount of resources spent on the DL, they continue to underperform. Beane and his scouts should be held accountable as well. The money we haves tied up in Jones, AJE, Groot, Ed, Bosa, Hoecht and Ogu for these results are unacceptable. Do we really believe Hoecht or Ogu are going to dramatically change our DL? We draft small LB’s who can’t hold up to the physicality of the position but yet continue to ignore drafting quality backups. And Joe A or Cairlo aren’t quality backups. In the secondary, when’s the last time a DB or Safety were in position to break on the ball for an INT. Typically, our INT’s are overthrows by the QB. As I mentioned in another post, our entire secondary played horrible last night. Do we really believe a rookie who’s had a significant knee injury is somehow going to change our secondary when he’s had zero NFL experience thus far and had tackling issues in college? All said we have significant issues on D and the Bills haven’t played well in the last three games against MIA, Saints and NE! Next up ATL on the road who have multiple offensive weapons! I would add to this statement... that the smallish linebackers are poor in coverage and cant shed blocks to use their speed... essentially making them non events most of the time... its interesting when you get a violent LB with some size like Shaq in there... his play pops... he is also poor in coverage... but he is a disruptor and doesnt get eaten up by the block of a WR or running back... Phils n Bills Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago I could be wrong, and please feel free to correct me if so, but wasn’t dropping DEs into coverage a large part of Rex’s defensive scheme? For some reason I think I remember Mario Williams complaining about it. anyway, if Jackson dropped into coverage when he should have been holding contain, either that was a communication error, or he simply made a bad read. That feels like a good teaching moment for a guy making his first start if it’s his mistake. Otherwise, clean up communication issues. if that was Bernard’s job to come up and hold contain, yikes. RunTheBall Posted 58 minutes ago Posted 58 minutes ago (edited) We have too many guys in the secondary who are washed. Tre is done, Johnson is a shell of his former self so far, Benford is underperforming, Rapp is god awful, guy has no feel or spacial awareness. At the snap he basically makes a b-line to the tunnel to make sure everything is in front of him. Bishop is the only one starting to round into form and thats not saying much. The whole D is underperforming. Maybe when Oliver comes back, the PED guys show, and now that Groot has shown up, and Walker is looking better each week, we will start to improve in the second half of the season. But something has to change. This is not a Super Bowl caliber defense at this point. Not even close. Lots of football to play though. Edited 58 minutes ago by RunTheBall 1 Quote

Hopefully they get it straightened out by next Monday. In general the defense has had a lot of mistakes weekly of guys not executing. From bad tackling, issues in coverage, and sloppiness across the board this has been the most unhinged defense McD has had so far. Even last year which you could argue was less talented on paper seemed to play better as a group based on the eye test compared to this year which statistically shows better then 24' is a mess at times to watch. My hope was as guys healed/came back from suspension the defense would improve substantially, but these errors are not talent its player execution which is far more serious issue especially when the offenses since BAL have not been murders row by any means. Against a rookie playing his 1st snaps Why not force him to his weaker left side Simple answer: You force him to where you know he wants to go and be there waiting for him. He would never flush to his left. You bait him into doing what he wants. It's the coaching staffs fault for having Jackson on the field. He looks lost, unathletic, and ill prepared. Quote
