3 up 3 down week 4

I’m not a big “officiating” guy but thought about this a little and tried to post it in the game thread. After tonight, there will have been 64 NFL games played this year. That Bills/Saints game was the largest point spread of the season to this point. So, that game was considered the most lopsided game of the year, on paper. What level of officiating crew do you think gets assigned to the Saints/Bills at a 1:00 PM on a Sunday? I promise you, it’s not the same crew that works the Super Bowl. 
 

We have been spoiled over the last few years as we are often playing high profile games. That means we generally get the top guys. I know that they missed the spot in KC (twice) but usually the games are pretty well officiated. Yesterday, we got to see what it must look like for the Titans and Colts on a crisp November afternoon.

Cameron Johnson  - Gutsy for this guy to come out in a knee brace and hold for the FG.. respect to him

 

Cook - I hearby formally apologize for being torn about if we should sign him... I was wrong... this kid makes up for very average WR core and is a threat to break it at anytime.. can you imagine if we were a down field team with a deep threat what this kid might do

 

Walker - he showed flashes in the prior 3 games... he seem to do that more consistently, fingers crossed... I could see how this kid with some experience could become a menace..

Rousseau -  No more Groot for me until he shows up... he did make 1 tackle... but he seems all but invisible... I get bone bruise, I get setting the edge.. but for what we resigned him for we need way more... way more... he has always been streaky, but to be invisible especially on a Defense that has key injuries and is borderline really bad this guy needs to be a leader... I have not seen this to date

 

Team Tackling - be better... do this against teams looking to make the playoffs it will be the difference in games... highly disappointing, prevents us from getting off the field in 3rd and long...  If I am honest the defense in general seems unfocused and honestly lackadaisical ... there is no fired up thing LT "lets go out there like a bunch a crazed dogs"  No leader getting frustrated or in peoples faces... concerning to me...   hope we get better... but with Babich I really have little hope of that... 

 

Officiating -  Is it me or literally did they seem like they had an agenda, I dont like to blame officiating but to me this game was a fail...  maybe I am over reacting, but that is what I saw. 

 

 

Our defense is lacking because the of what players are told to do with in a scheme that needs everything to go perfectly for it to work as designed, I know that this may come as a surprise to some, but it’s not working, and frankly a scheme change / modification has been needed for several years now, lol. 

 

oh well, I will continue to hope for the best outcomes, 👍

Van Demark -- Struggled in pass pro leading to at least one sack

Bishop - Getting better

Kincaid - Getting better all the way around

Cook - Continues to impress this year

 

Down:

Groot - What the heck, man? It makes you wonder who will be riding the pine when steroid boy returns. 

Dorian Williams - Out of position on multiple occasions and getting shook by Rattler.

3rd Down Defense - At some point, Babich has to be held accountable as well. But the guys on the field are not doing him any favors.

So many folks down on Van Demark…yeah he wasn’t perfect in pass pro but it was his first start in a long time and he was absolutely smacking guys around in the run game like a beast…

Held accountable for what?  They were 5/13 on 3rd and 0/2 on 4th.  

 

The longest 3rd down the saints converted was 7 yards on a scramble that cam lewis missed a tackle on from the opening drive.  There was also a 3rd and 1 sneak, an option run on a 3rd and 3, a 3rd and 1 run conversion, and the TD pass to Olave which was also a 3 yard distance.

I think there's too much onus on the "he got his head around" part of it.  He didn't play the ball and obstructed the receivers ability to get to the ball - isn't that interference?

All that being said, the Bills need to stop letting teams score on their first scripted drive. The difference between the Jets games and the last two games is that we let the inferior team score early, keeping them in the game.  

Through 4 games the Bills are 2 yds away from being the worst run defense in the league!! Only the Bears are worse... by 1 yard. Bills fans are not satisfied because the Bills FO spent the offseason bolstering the defense but so far it's the same ol' same ol'... offense "struggling" to the tune of 30+ pts per game and needing every single point because the defense is barely holding on.

#1 in pass defense though, and shockingly only 30th in yards per attempt when they allowed 8.2 yards per carry in week 1.  Like the actual team-wide yards per carry allowed actually went down against NO, even allowing 5.55 yards per carry across 34 carries.  That's how bad they were in week 1. 

 

They need to do a better job with athletic QBs, need to tackle better to create more third downs and prevent conversions, and need to be better getting off the field.  If they did all of those things better though - they'd probably be the best defense in the league.

just those things LOL... the one thing that drives me nuts is their pursuit laterally and getting off blocks.. they seem to get block easily and teams force things outside very successfully... although they did look better yesterday.

While I do acknowledge that 3rd down D has been an issue at times this season and most of last season, the Saints were only 5 for 13 on third down and 0 for 2 on fourth down yesterday.

Oh I am not suggesting we dont have a problem... I mean to me it is obvious that this is not a defense that is going to win us games... in fact with out 17 we have issues...  but it did occur to me watching some of the points these teams are putting up... that we are not alone. 

 

1950s-1960s: Around 14.5 points per game per team. 

1970s: Approximately 15.3 points per game per team. 

1980s: Averaged about 15.8 points per game per team. 

1990s: Increased to approximately 20.2 points per game per team. 

2000s: A further increase to about 21.1 points per game per team. 

2010s: Averaged around 22.6 points per game per team. 

2020s: Started strong with about 22.9 points per game per team, but saw some fluctuation, according to StatMuse. 

 

There is clearly a trend... obviously the changes to favor offense are in full effect... but that does not excuse bad tackling, lack of a pass rush and performance on 3rd and long as well as being about last in the league in rush d...  we are looking at winning a championship not being the Fouts led Chargers in the early 80s

I don't think allen left the pocket, i'm not sure he ever really did on the play.
