🚨🚨Pump the brakes lol on Pro Football Network's simulator🚨🚨

Did a little experiment where I did NOT choose a team and just let the entire draft run, and here are Buffalo's picks (they did not trade at all). I don't think the logic of this model is buttoned up, exactly. 2 CBs and 4 Ss, and 2 RBs. Bills gonna play a 3-2-6 or even 2-2-7 defense in 2024, apparently.

Kool-Aid McKinstry - CB

Cole Bishop - S

Blake Corum - RB

DeWayne Carter - DT

Demani Richardson - S

Ray Davis - RB

Trey Taylor - S

Jay Stanley - S

Jarvis Brownlee - CB

Khari Coleman - LB

Yeah - this one won't do at all.

Right. I’d hate this with everything I have

Trading back out of the first is like a cheat code with PFN's simulator. Stupid value all over the place in this mock. Sign me up.

Much better. I don’t like the RB. But everything else is awesome

Really like the prospects chosen in this one, with one trade back out of the 2nd rd. Those b2b LSU DTs are pretty cool.

Like this one even more. What’s with the early rd RBs tho? If they take a 3rd round RB again I’ll rip my tv off the wall. I agree we need a body there but Cook has proven capable and shouldn’t spend the resources on one so early with all the needs we have

Value was only screaming RB or LB, if I recall. Cook is halfway through his rookie deal already, and isn't the best blocker or short yardage, power back. Love Cook's talent, but there is a need for a complimentary guy who has some traits. And, in the event of injury, another guy who can attack defenses. (That being said, don't love Estime's feet tbh.) The draft is for adding cost-controlled talent on a longer timeline than next season. The Bills currently have NOTHING in the RB pipeline behind Cook. (And yet, I understand how unpopular a 3rd rd RB pick would be.)

I understand all of that. Except you are almost hoping you can get someone that plays significant time with the 3rd pick. At least this year with our holes and needs. Could take a RB in rd 5 or after to come in and do what you’re hoping. JMO

While that is true the 3rd round is also  a place where you still don't reach down a tier to take a position you need. Obviously for this exercise we are all using the simulator's draftboard as if it were our own so to play that out in round one I never reach beyond the top 5 players on their board. Round 2 not beyond the top 8 and rounds 3 and 4 not beyond the top 10. After that I give myself a little more leeway because that is realistic. Once you get to rounds 5 through 7 teams are looking at their rosters and saying "where might these guys have the best chance to stick." But earlier reaching through tiers is a no-no. So you have to either take trades and move back, trade UP or sometimes take a position that isn't necessarily a need.

I say all that as someone who also does not want yet ANOTHER day 2 pick on a running back. When you have an established starter at the spot that should be a no-no too.

I normally try and do a 4 round mock in the final day or two of the run up where I use the simulator but use my own board and mark guys off in the background as it goes.

I like the idea of picking players not outside the top available at the time. I don’t go by that generally because for example, if a QB is there we aren’t taking one. And while I do see the point of it as taking the best football players available at the time I also have an issue with it if you already have someone at that position, OR if it’s a position that can generally be found later in the draft. RBs are a dime a dozen and have short shelf life’s. I get the idea of continuing to draft one. Hell, almost all my mocks have Jawhar Jordan in them. I love the kid. But I also wouldn’t reach earlier than rd5 to do it. It’s not that I don’t think a certain player may not be good enough, it’s the holes and needs we have vs the resources to get them all.
