They have great State Parks and Snowshoe is a fun Mountain to ski/bike. New River whitewater is amazing. Maybe just don't wander off too far. Actually, I've always run into very nice, pleasant, friendly people when visiting. Very few people have any business in the hollers where you might see these folks.
