Buffalo Bills Specialists (top 10)

I just wanted to bring some attention to both Corey Bojorquez and Tyler Bass. Both young men were much maligned by many of us, and have since pulled themselves to the top of the league in their positions. Bojo is number 1 in the NFL in average punt distance, and Tyler Bass sits at number 7 in field goals made. I think if anything it proves that we need to let some of these kids develop before we decide they’re no good. This coaching and scouting staff has done a great job of not only seeing the talent in these kids, but sticking with them and allowing them to grow into that talent. Hell, 6 games ago I was praying Bass would hit an extra point, now I feel good when he’s lining up for a 55 yarder. Bojo, although I hope he only continues to have one punt per night (which was a 68 yarder), has absolutely smoked the football all year, besides that one gaffe. I feel really good heading into the future with these two young men. Go Bills!

My only issue with going with the rookies is the special teams coach has no real experience with kicking and the Bills should have brought in an assistant ST coach who has experience with kicking if you are going that route.

I can’t say I follow special teams too much and how the coaching staff is built around them. I can see the confidence in these guys, which i think is a direct result of the confidence the coaching staff has put in them...and as a result, we have confidence in them.

The Athletic has a good piece on Matakevich: https://theathletic.com/2250861/2020/12/10/tyler-matakevich-bills-special-teams/

Say's he's had the Pitt game circled since signing with the Bills....

Quote

Beane acts quickly, signing Matakevich to a two-year, $7.15 million contract on the first day of free agency. Pittsburgh media wonders if there’s been a clerical error. The Bills paid how much for a backup linebacker? Matakevich didn’t expect to go anywhere, but the financial commitment from Buffalo is too much to pass up.

After news of Matakevich’s signing becomes official, Farwell gets a text from a special teams coordinator in the AFC North who is thrilled Matakevich is out of the division.

Quote

Matakevich admits he’s had this Steelers game circled on his calendar since he signed his contract in Buffalo. It’s a chance to show the Steelers what they walked away from, just like it was against UConn in his first college start.

Does not sound like Steelers walked away from him unless he offered contract to Steelers to match but players use this type of thing to pump self up.

I am wondering if on goal line stances whether Bills should consider replacing a DB with him. He is a solid tackler.

Seems he has been doing pretty well as we rank 5th in the NFL in special teams DVOA. Experience can often be overated. Talent is far more important at the end of the day.

I like what our special teams are doing this year.

While far and few between, the kickoff coverage has been excellent.

Bojorquez has been very good with a boomer of a leg.  Reminds me of Reggie Roby.

Punt coverage needs more speed to get those punts downed inside the 20.

Tyler Bass-o-matic has been steady in the back half of the season.  We will see if this holds up once playoffs start.

Roberts has been very good and consistently gives us extra yards (in the form of at least one first down) on punts.  Kickoffs are mixed with great returns vs questionable decisions on coming out of the endzone and "trying to hard."

Also forgot to mention that we have not lost an onside kick this year.  I like that the front line lets the ball go past them to the second level guy whose only job is to cover up the ball.

Dude - u serious?  Do you se ANYTHING wrong with the goal line D that requires wholesale changes?  I dunno about that suggestion.....the Bills seem pretty damn tight on the goal line stands.....

Wholesale changes? No.  But if they get injured or worn out it helps to have someone who can tackle well.

I was not concerned with going with Bass or Bojo in the off season. That was exactly the approach I had. Both guys are young and can kick it a mile. They'll have bad plays because they are young and inexperienced. But keep developing them and see what you get. That's the approach I took.

Bojo still scares me sometimes because when he has a bad one, it is REALLY bad. But he has definately been a lot better this year.

Glad we have a coaching staff that is devoted to developing players. There are definitely some coaches out there who don't.

We had him in on a couple goal line stands earlier in the year when the LBs were banged up. There’s a reason he’s a starter on special teams and a back up LB

The key is to use players right.  Klein was declared a waste of slot and money with foolish post about trading him for donuts.  They used him right and he is asset.

I have seen film on Matakevich and he is a good tackler and goal line stances are places players get banged up.

If he is effective, and with no scrimmages/preseason games to test it is hard to tell, better he be in there banging than another player needed rest of game on defense.

The punt coverage, I couldn’t agree more. There’s been at least 3 or 4 times where I’ve yelled at the tv, that you gotta down that, when his punts hit the 3 yard line and there’s nobody there to touch it. Frustrating.
