Not surprising to most. The nearly nationwide shutdown had almost no effect on total deaths. You would expect a shutdown this dramatic to have a big effect on total deaths.

That supports what other studies have been saying: We are massively undercounting Covid deaths.

It’s probably the opposite in areas outside NYC.   The chart above is inconclusive because there’s a huge lag in getting the right statistics to the NCHS.  But the early April data suggests Wuhan deaths were running much higher than ordinary flu, pneumonia etc.  It also shows that we hit a peak around Easter.

The curve has been flattened, warmer weather is coming.  Time to open up and build up the immunity.

What math do you use to determine the total deaths of something that didn't occur? How can one determine what would have been if no shutdown had been in place?

Obama has the formula to use. We just need to get it from him. If I remember correctly it calculated "jobs saved".

You sure you didn't mean Vince Foster?

What sarcasm?

Didn't realize you really thought Bill Gates was engineering the pandemic. I knew some Trumpsters believed it, though.

Sugar coat it any way you like...

Sugar coat what? You’re gloating because people are unemployed.  Do you realize that this has happened everywhere in the world in the same manner?

That would require him to have a fully functioning frontal lobe.

Evidence points to the reality that he does not.

Gee:

So we've moved from the virus started in:

Bats

to

Wet markets

to

Europe...

Now back to the only place that ever made sense.

Imagine how much ahead of the news cycle you can be when you think for yourself.

China did themselves no favors. They could have come out and said "we bad" blamed it on a bat (while the whole world knew they were lying) but taken ownership with a "mistakes happen." Instead of saving face, they look worse than a five year old boy blaming his older sister for breaking the window while a pile of rocks sits at his feet.

They may be able to pay the "msm" to lie for them and blame the Wuhan Virus on Canada or the United States, but the whole world knows it was China, and most importantly, the leadership of the countries that were most impacted know it was China.

Does that mean China pays a price? We will see. It may just mean they have to pay more payola to world leaders and "msm." Or, it means they really will pay an economic price. Certainly no one in their right mind could ever believe another word that comes out of Beijing (if they ever did to being with).

Erm.

This cannot be shown enough.

It shows the severity of the Covid impact on deaths. When you shut down the country, deaths should drop off a cliff. In this case, they didn't. We know heart disease, stroke, and other deaths are down...yet total deaths are level. That shows the brutal impact of Covid and why Trump says he did the right thing shutting down the country.

GG is right that it's time to reopen, but whether the change in weather that should suppress spread offsets the increased transmission from more contacts remains to be seen.

Wait, are you saying heart disease went away? I can see deaths by accident way down. But you think other non contagious illness like heart disease and cancer went away?

No. Hospitals are seeing much fewer deaths from heart disease complications and strokes while people sit at home.

I have not seen the same evidence from cancer deaths decreasing.

How in the world does a lockdown end deaths from cancer, heart attacks, strokes, suicides, vascular dementia, diabetes, etc.? The reason any of those would be down is if they are being counted as Covid deaths

For some of those (heart attacks and strokes), they are brought on by activity and stress. Other things too. Those are the deaths that have been decreasing.

And then there's this:

Not to mention the NYC morgue and burial/cremation issues in the place where it spread the most (as much as 20%). Should this spread to 20% elsewhere from the 1-3% it may be now, expect those areas to follow.
