You guys are nuts!

So, I am back today from my vacation to Buffalo, Rochester, Ithaca, and London. I did some sightseeing in Buffalo and was VERY disappointed in Buffalo's tourism. We stopped at the Clarence exit on I-90 and their busy tourism section didn't have ONE MAP of downtown Buffalo or any info about it, only Niagara stuff! I was amazed. The Wilcox Museum was a huge let-down, and nothing was open since it was Monday.

Anyways..the one highlight was the Anchor Bar. Everybody has told me how over-rated they are and its a tourist trap. Well, I think you're NUTS! The wings were amazing!

They were the biggest wings I've ever seen. The outside was crsipy and the inside was juicy they way they are supposed to be. The sauce was excellent, I had medium and they it was just hot/spicy enough with excellent taste.

By far the best batch of wings I've ever had..and yes, I've had Duffs, Ricks, Big Tree, and several other well known wing places.

If you compare the AB's wings to anywhere outside of Buffalo then yes they are phenomenal, but they aren't the best. I think a lot of people will say Duff's although I don't particularly care for them. The best wings in WNY are at the Bar-Bil tavern in East Aurora.

One of my wife's coworkers is from Buffalo, and she said that Rootie's has the best wings. Any agree?

I love Duff's, I think they're great. Maybe I'll try Anchor this week, as I've never eaten there before...

I totally think the idea of "best wings" is completely subjective. The problem with these places is that they all have off nights. I have been to Duff's and the wings have been pretty bad and dry, but most of the time the wings are great. Same thing with Anchor Bar, it totally depends on the day you go. Sometimes they are great, and sometimes they dissapoint.

I have only had La Nova wings once, and it was the La Nova on Main Street in Williamsville, not the one on the west side of Buffalo. Anyway, I was not impressed with La Nova's wings or pizza. I should probably try them again, but I thought the pizza was just plain bad.

I think 9 times out of 10, I would take Duff's over any wings, but Anchor Bar is up there pretty high on my list too.

YO MAN ........the last time I was there they had a jazz band playing and I met the owners. It was an old couple sitting with a little table in the corner drinking their wine together. When I was there I said "MAN IM IN BUFF, I will have the hottest wings you have with a pitcher of beer" They handed me a batch of of SUICIDE WINGS ....man it was awsome. I agree with you it is a great place .......THE ANCHOR BAR.

The thing is, there is no excuse to make bad wings anywhere. Making a good wing isn't rocket science. They just need to be big enough and fried at a high enough temperature. Thats my #1 complaint usually, most places outside of Buffalo don't set their fryers high enough so you end up with wings with rubbery skin that taste like stevestojan. Another complaint is places that think more sauce = hotter, Duff's is usually guilty of this.

I liked Rootie's, but I heard a nasty rumor that they closed.  Does anyone know if  this is true?

21752[/snapback]

The rumor of Rootie's closing is true. I live about 3 minutes away. THe owners just decided to close up, not that business was down, they just wanted to retire.

I however did not think their wings were all that. IN my opinion, a bar called Elmo's in the plaza across from Rooties has the best wings in the area after Anchor and Duffs.

La Nova wings and pizza are fantastic. you must have been there on an off night.

the west side La Nova burned down last weekend.

Massiello was there on Sat a.m. stating the city will use all resources available to rebuild it.

this coming from as guy that does not have 2 Buffalo nickels to rub togther. i thought it was funny.

I have only had the west side La Nova's. I have had stuff from there 30-40 times. I look forward to it when I go up there. Never has there been an off night on the pizza or wings. I hope they rebuild it, it is simply amazing.

The Clarence Information Center is operated by the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation. That's why there's no Buffalo stuff.

I like the Anchor Bar. My wife and I were there the Saturday night before the Bills-Steelers game in '99 and we had a great time. It was really crowded that night, as there were tons of Steeler fans there, but the food was good and they had a jazz band playing that was good too.

I like both Anchor Bar and Duff's wings. I don't think either "blows away" the other.

Yall here(not signed in..at work..)

Go to "The Pub" on Broadway in Depew, near Transit. Best wings in town bar none.

And I thought Rooties was a close second, followed by Duffs.

Umm, you quoted the wrong person! I never said La Nova. I've never HAD La Nova (and apparantly won't make the trek this trip either, since it burned down .

You know I was just up in Southtown's area mostly a few weeks back. Had wings at Jacobi's, Blasdell Pizza and whatever is in the airport. To be honest I though the ones in the airport were pretty damn good. Couldn't tell who it was. Jacobi's were okay, and I was really disappointed in the Blasdell pizza's and wings I got there. They used to be so much better.

We ordered pizza and wings from Blasdell Pizza last year when we came up for the opener. I really liked their pizza and their wings were pretty good too.

That's my point Rich. I have always thought they were pretty good. But that day they were very fair.

Another shout out for Bar-Bill's in East Aurora. They never disappoint. My folks live in Elma, so whenever I am in town we take a drive over to Bar-Bill Tavern. If you guys are down that way, head on in for some great food, and amazing wings.

VA- Agree...Blasdell's wings aren't what they used to be

The best wings in the Southtowns are from Mamoser's Tavern in the Village of Hamburg. They know how to cook 'em, and the sauce is by far the best out there. If you haven't tried them, you need to check it out.

The original owners of Rooties opened up a Rooties here in South Florida, it's where I go to watch all the games. They do have great wings, best in FL anyway!

I'll be the third to push Bar-Bill's. Do they still have the Wings-Pitcher Special. My brother and I used to go there after Sabres games all the time.

For all you Atlantans. The Why Knot in Peachtree City actually makes some decent wings (size and taste). Of course they have all the foo-foo flavors to cater to the general squid population, but the Buffalo wings are excellent.

There are good wings all over Buffalo. I won't single out my favorites. Instead I list my 3 criteria for good wings....

1.Wings must be crispy. Rubbery, undercooked wings suck!

2.Serve a decent size wing. Don't give me those little wings that could be mistaken for coming from a sparrow.

3. I want Blue Cheese with my wings!! Not Blue Cheese mixed with mayo! Not ranch dressing! Not any other cheap imitations!

Meet these criteria and you will win me over. ;)
