Sabres & NHL 2017-18 - Entry Draft on June 22

Recommended Posts

FYI Sabres Winter Classic pre-sale starts at 10am today. Prices range from $119 to $489, not incl fees. I'll pass.

For comparison, my seats for the first WC at RWS cost $10. (They were lower bowl obstructed. My buddy and I walked to the upper deck and saw everything.)

Cool. Any word on why he got benched for that one game? Does he have off ice issues?

They saw what they needed from him against Canada on the first game, and wanted to evaluate other players...is my understanding. He already earned his spot on the juniors roster. He's a high character kid from everything I have heard.

I wonder how long he stays in college

I guess it will depend on how good he is, and can he immediately play in the NHL vs the AHL. If that good to play immediately in the NHL, will want to burn that 3-year ELC as fast as possible I woud think while getting paid the $850K max.

But then again, he would do that anyway even he went straight to the AHL, just get paid $70K i think.

IN other words, i dont have a clue, maybe an expert like Shrader or Darin can give the reasons pro/con leaving college for a really good player

I wanted to say two years of college, but it seems like lately the truly elite NCAA guys have been jumping one year after being drafted. Either way, we won't be waiting very long to see him in the Sabres system. As for that contract, he'll wind up with a ton of bonuses, so he'll get more than that $850k. I've never really seen much detail on what those are, but I'd imagine that he'd be cashing in on a few of them even if he was in the AHL. So there's definitely potential to increase that money significantly.

Just looked at the ELC rules..if you sign your ELC, and you are 18 or 19 by September 15th, your ELC can "slide" for those two years..the infamous 9 game rule . So back to juniors and I am guessing the $70K minimum and not eating into the 3 year ELC.

His birthday is November 22nd, so he may want to not sign till after sophomore year unless he is guaranteed to be on the Sabres. At least that'show i read it.

The Pro/Con is to get through your ELC as quickly as possible so you can get to your second, less limited contract. ELCs for players like Mittlestadt will work like this:

1. Maximum Salary: $925K

2. Maximum Signing Bonus: $92.5k

3. Maximum "Schedule A" Performance Bonus (Top Six on the team in ice time, +/- rating, goals, etc): $850K

4. Maximum "Schedule B" Performance Bonus (NHL Awards, Finishing in the Top 10 in specific categories, etc.): $2,000,000.00

So theoretically a player on an ELC can make $3,775,000.00

It is a distinct possibility that Mittlestadt could join the Sabres towards the end of the season if they make the playoffs this year but I think it's more likely that it happens for a playoff run NEXT season. I think he has the lower body to compete in the NHL right now but he definitely needs to add 15-20 pounds of solid muscle mass up top. He'd get slaughtered on the walls in the NHL and wouldn't be able to regularly get to the dirty areas around the net. It's no secret that NHL owners like TP will pay for production. There's a reason we're trying to lock up Jack long term after only two seasons on his ELC - the price is likely only going to go up.

It's all but guaranteed that CM never plays a shift in Rochester.

I don't know if I'd say it's all than guaranteed. With this team not quite being there yet, I could see that late season signing actually getting him a handful of games in the AHL as opposed to that playoff rush. I'll be curious to see how quickly he adds that weight you're talking about though. I'm much more familiar with which training staffs out east have good reputations, but I imagine that being a big money Big 10 school means Minnesota is strong in that department.

We also have the luxury of time and depth. I could see if we needed power play help he might get a call, but with the number 1 pp he can wait and get better before he is really needed.

If I were Mittlestadt, I wouldn't entertain signing a contract and playing even part of a season in the AHL. That's a pretty big gamble.

If you burn a year of an ELC in exchange for a handful of games in the AHL, it can pay off pretty quickly.
