really? do you notice many impartial expert or nonexpert observers praising the bills' talent level as comparatively excellent or even good? i don't.

Then you didn't pay attention at all...

And that's just a quick google search. Lots of impartial observers had the Bills' roster rated very high and very deep heading into last season.

While Rex gets some of the credit, hard not to give Whaley at least some credit for Taylor. I do not understand the desperation that some have for a different spin of the wheel in the crapshoot to get a "franchise" QB, or those that say with certainty that Tyrod is "not a franchise QB." In my humble opinion such statements are based in significant part on biases over size and against QBs that can run.

I do not assume Tyrod can't be that guy. He is a natural leader. He is a tireless worker. He is a gamer. He has an adequate arm and exceptional athleticism. Does he need to improve in some areas (release, vision, and using the entire field)? Sure he does - but I think he had a hell of a year for a first year starter. If he does not get hurt maybe we make the playoffs and everyone is in a different mood. He is elite right now with his deep ball and his scrambling ability. Been a long time since we had a QB that was elite at ANYTHING and I for one am thankful for Hotrod Taylor. The young man has a history of beating the odds, and while I don't think his future is a given I am rooting for him. Take a developmental QB if he is a value, but go all in on Tyrod for now. My kind of player.

Actually, most analysts were calling the Bills a top-5 team in talent last offseason.

yes, look how prophetic that was! last year is now history and pretty disappointing history at that. rhino's first reference starts with the caveat of "if they had a qb". how can anyone possibly rank a roster exclusive of qb. this is bs designed to calm the masses of frustrated bills fans. and it appears to have at least in some small measure succeeded.

if nothing else, we now can discard two sources as accurate talent evaluators.

 Way to move the goalposts.

His back is against the wall this year because they almost need a QB at some point in this draft. So they're making a decision out of necessity because no one is signed beyond this season. It's not quite the scenario in 2013, but there are similarities.

I'd agree TT was a Rex pushed move, but I'm not able to see how Buddy was the driving force behind EJM. Whaley admitted his excitement of the pick and the ramifications of it not working out here:

Buddy Nix has nothing to do with EJ still being on the team in 2016 though, DW owns that 100%. Not knowing when to cut your losses and move on is the sign of a weak GM. Not being able to cut your losses and move on due to salary cap mismanagement is also the sign of a weak GM.

Rhino, those articles are a year old as you point out, and we ended 8-8. I doubt you will find a story this year listing how deep we are for 2016

We always have a talented roster in April. Not so much by the end of November when it sinks in.

Which teams have a better backup QB?

i'd say nfl.com (your reference) moved the goal posts. in what idiot universe does someone judge roster talent exclusive of the most important position? and who besides you would take that seriously?

I think EJ still being here had more to do with his guaranteed contract than anything else. They don't save anything by letting him go, and would have to pay someone else to do the same job.

EJ's contract is guranteed. Why cut him?
