Tim Graham's interview on Buffalo Rumblings

Recommended Posts

2) He said he doubted the Browns were high on Marrone, and that it was just Sexton blowing smoke. The Browns interviewed Marrone twice according to the Plain Dealer and he was on a "short list" of guys they were zeroing in on:

"Marrone, who interviewed twice with the Browns in Arizona and was believed to have talked to the Chargers, agreed to become head coach of the Bills at about 6 a.m., according to ESPN's Adam Schefter."

I also interviewed with the Browns, along with my neighbor.

Tim Graham is a baby I think we all know this...his twitter fights are childish to say the least. But in a world where my football team doesn't have a knowledgeable beat writer during Pegula's ownership run and the head coach search Tim Graham's twitter feed has been a great source of information.

Yeah, exactly. That's how blowing smoke works. There's no source to that, just a rumor that got planted then passed around and echoed throughout the Twittersphere. Schefter's agent is also Jimmy Sexton, same as Marrone. How odd.

Don't make me stick up for TG, I feel dirty.

So papers of record like the Plain Dealer report it, but you're sure they're wrong. Got it...

"One thing became clear in this epic battle between the Browns and Eagles: Syracuse coach Doug Marrone is off the table as Plan B for both clubs.

Marrone, who interviewed twice with the Browns in Arizona ..."

"Cleveland's second choice, Doug Marrone, eventually went on to choose the Buffalo Bills over the Browns."

Just listened to the TG interview and my first impression is that he's (a) full of himself, and (b) he's full of shiit.

So much of what he has to say about Marrone's hiring is just wrong:

1) He said Marrone was the second or third guy they interviewed. In fact they interviewed Whisenhunt, Horton, Lovie Smith and Chip Kelly before Marrone. They also interviewed Mike McCoy. So six guys total, about average for a HC search.

I could probably blow some more of his pronouncements out of the water with Googling, but my time's too valuable to waste on a light weight poser like him...

You may be right about TG but one thing for sure Brandon and Whaley were way off on Marrone. Chip Kelly blew off the Bills in short order and Lovie Smith had to lobby to get interviewed by the Bills. My point is the Bills did a half assed job in conducting a coaching search last time and then spun up Marrone to be some innovative offensive guru. Marrone oversold Brandon and he in turn oversold Marrone to us fans. On this particular point I think TG got it right.

"No one knows right now. But it’s usually the people who reach high, refusing to settle for the safe choice, who find their way to great."

(I can't belive I used Sully to make a point)

http://www.buffalonews.com/article/20130104/SPORTS/130109535 (by TG himself)

"the Bills interviewed former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt, current Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly, whose team won the Fiesta Bowl there Thursday night.

Smith and Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone went to the desert to meet the Bills. The Bills contingent reportedly then went to Colorado to interview Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Saturday."

Correct. Browns interviewed Doug on Thurs, we interviewed him on Fri. Saturday was when the smoke got blown i.e. 2nd BS "interview", it spreads on Twitter, and Russ caves and gives him the opt-out with no offsets. If you're looking for an agent, I would go with Sexton.

Tired of arguing. Mary Kay Cobot, the Browns beat reporter, would not be regurgitating agent-driven puffery. She reported on Saturday Jan 5th (hence, written on Friday) that the Browns interviewed Marrone twice in Arizona. Good enough for me...

If you have 37 minutes, I recommend listening to this interview with Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.

According to Graham, the Pegula's were P.O.'d at Marrone the he wanted a contract extension for him and his staff, and did not offer him a contract extension; Marrone was not a nice person, he read everything on the internet and would chew reporters out for things that they posted; Terry Pegula will pick the next HC, Whaley is doing the coordination on the search, Brandon is sitting in just as an advisor, Overdorff is not involved in the HC search.

after watching the this I'm glad TP is doing the interviews because even though he is not a football guy knowing Xs & Os, I think the most important part of a HC is leadership and being able to pick the right guys to do the right jobs and being able to run team properly.

don't like that Gms around the League think we are a mess and that most candidates won't take the job if they have other options and some wont take it all. Graham feels That Reich and Schwartz would want the job.

I'm unclear as to the debate, we all know what the outcome of hiring Marrone was.

The Bills wanted to go outside of their normal MO. So along with retreads and hot coordinators they looked to the college ranks. They wanted someone that could be the head coach for the long run. Kelly decided to stay at Oregon, then changed his mind. Took a chance and decided on Marrone. Marrone had marginal success and then quit. Am I missing something?
