[ot] potential business - question

Recommended Posts

A buddy, who knows that I do a fair amount of web & graphic design, asked me the other day if I would start helping him out with a possible business venture that he's thinking about.

Basically, he wants to set something up, similar to a wedding planner, but instead of planning the wedding, it would be planning the bachelor party.

Who better to set something like that up for 10-20 guys than a group of people with contacts to all of the hot spots - limo agency, strip clubs, sports teams, casinos, etc?

What do you guys think? Is this something that a "best man" would utilize? We're all still early 20's, so we haven't exactly dealt with planning bachelor parties yet, but in 5+ years in a fraternity, we know how to plan a good night of fun.

Just curious...

Not sure about the planning aspect, but spending last summer in Vegas I saw tons of bachelor/bachelorette parties on the Strip. So there is definitely a market for it. My cousin's engaged to be married in June, and her fiancee is going to Vegas for a week with some of his buddies from school. So could very well work out. As long as costs are not too high I would say go for it.

If nothing else, we'd be doing it for a good time. Nothing quite like getting to know strippers on a first name basis in order to know who to recommend for our "clients".

We certainly wouldn't be looking to quit our jobs to do this full time.

Mt guess from an old fogey(41). Guys do not plan like chicks. Maybe, and strictly a maybe, if you focused on one or two cities. My guess would be Myrtle Beach and Vegas. If you could somehow offer a package deals that included hotel, golf(with private beer girl of course), limos, strippers, etc, I think you could have a chance. But to try and get this arranged long distance would be a big pain. IMHOO

My thoughts exactly (and I'm not an old fogey  ).

A wedding *needs* to be planned; there's a lot of things that need to be done beforehand - flowers, halls for 100+ people, food, pictures, video, etc, etc, etc. What's involved in a bachelor party? Call some girls up, buy some alcohol, get a hotel room (or just skip that and go to a few strip clubs). Not much planning involved there. Would you go through a service to throw a dinner party at your home for friends and family? There's more involved in that than a bachelor party...

Not to rain on the parade, but I'll echo everyone else's sentiment - don't quit your day job.

Not to rain on your parade, but how much do you think that a guy would pay for a service like this? Wouldn't that take away from money for BEER?

As another poster mentioned, planning trips would be a good idea, but it would be tough if you do not live in those cities (Myrtle Beach, Vegas, etc.). What you need is to live in those cities, and advertise to other cities the "services" that you provide for them if they buy the package deal from you. THAT would work, but if you do not live in that city, I do not see it working on a large enough scale to run a business. Just think of the liability insurance you will need.

As people have pointed out guys do not plan things like chicks do... that said... Stereotypically, gay men LOVE to plan things!!! So your service could be embraced by the gay community

The up side is that you could make some money. The down side is that all the strippers you would get to know would be called Lance

there would be a market, but it would only be a small percentage of guys. Most guys will go out to dinner, call some strippers and it's not that big of a deal.

the market would be for the people who are too busy or who are going to a city they aren't familiar with. there are services that do this already.

you would make your money not by charging for the planning, but by getting a cut from the limo company and the strippers.

udonkey: Ask yourself honestly if this is something that YOU and your potential business partners would use? I mean HONESTLY answer the question, not say what you think you would do since you're planning on making a business out of it. That will give you your answer and what you should do. Actually take it a step further and poll some guys, especially any future best men you might know.

I don't think it's a bad idea...i'm getting married this summer and my incompetent group of friends are supposed to plan a bachelor party for me...i suppose they'll get something together in the end, but if someone was there to help their dumb asses, things would go over much smoother

plus, this sort of business could cater to the rich folk that visit the area (i dunno, say niagara falls, or a group of buddies coming in for a bills game...perhaps even prospective sabres or bills)...i can't speculate how much business it could generate, but the idea isn't that bad

This is why this type of business would be perfect... The reason we don't plan things like chicks do is out of pure laziness. My buddy is getting married later this year, and if i could just call someone to plan it, read off my debit card number, and its all set? !@#$ A, right, I would do that... Because left up to me, it will be cases of beer, a stip club, and drinking till we puke. If i could pay someone to get a limo-bus together, plan several strip club ventures, a trip down the strip of whatever city, etc, that would be sweet.

Planning things sucks. That's why guys don't do it.

But if they're so incompetent, would they even think about hiring out the planning portion? Doubtful...

I was best man once and booked a bus from Jamestown (1 1/2 hrs from Buffalo) with keg to Fort Erie and the clubs.....I had to buy lunch meats and made subs for 30 guys.....along with pop, cups, tipping the driver etc... IT WAS A REAL PAIN IN THE ASS!! (But EXTREMELY fun)

I think the idea could fly.....I'd go to Vegas with a few guys to research what they do....at least it be a "Business Trip"...

I'm sure you can get info from the internet what these type of "planners" do.

I wouldn't limit my focus on just men. I drove limo for a number of years and the women are crazier then the men. I loved being a limo driver

That way you get the groom one week and the bride the next.

When I was a driver, we took 5 limos to Canada for my Bach Party and a week later my wife took 2 with her girls to Canada ....a word of advise however, make sure the driver can keep his mouth shut!!

Good luck....I would think this could be a fun and somewhat profitable business around here.....But your young....AND THE STORIES YOU'LL BE ABLE TO TELL.......you'll be a legend!!!

Let me know if you need someone to research the strippers for you...I'd be happy to "SCREEN THEM" for you!

I can see a market for it, but I would add that there is a wide margin of what constitutes a good bachelor party. Not all bachelor parties are just limos, drinking, strippers and puking. Sometimes guys want more than just a lap dance. Much more. So now you are running an escort service?

Will it sell? Sure. But you better have a hell of an attorney so when one of your clients gets too drunk and too crazy with one of the strippers, you'll be prepared with waivers signed by everyone.

Not only do guys not plan like chicks, but how many of them really drop big bucks on a bachelor party? If you are catering to local guys, what is the total budget for the average night of beer, dinner and strippers? If you are going for the Vegas/MB angle, you've got a lot of competition from the online travel folks. There are scores of sites for cheap air fare/hotel/golf packages, and even T-Bone could find his own strippers/whores in Vegas (assuming he'd want to).

Nothing wrong with pursuing a new business venture on the side, but be careful before putting too much stock in the idea.

I have been best man a couple times and planning the stag is fun. I had people begging me to go out and scout strippers with me. I am in the restauraunt business and have friends at just about every restauraunt and bar around me. It was fun to go grab drinks, hang out and order booze or food from them. We go golfing in the am- its not that hard to get a tee time. I applaud your effort and ambition. I just dont think this venture would work. Keep plugging away though.
