What do you hate or love most about the holiday season?

Recommended Posts

I am in the minority on this, and this may sound a little sappy..but I love Christmas...

I grew up in a large family that had little money...we really went without a lot of the things that our peers had...but somehow, my folks always managed to make Christmas great for us... we were kids, we all wanted stuff...to get a whole bunch of stuff on one glorious morning was just the greatest thing...I can't ever remember being disappointed...all of us (there were 8 kids) were off from school and played together...we got along famously, for the most part... so, when people get all pissed off because they start celebrating Christmas too early these days, I keep it to myself, but think, "jeez, the other 10 months of the year are so ugly, why not stretch it out?" Of course, now, I could care less about getting gifts, but I love to give what I can...and I love the extra consideration and kindness that people display (for the most part) through the holiday season...I wish it did last all year...

What I hate: as an adult, the (justified) cynicism about the holiday makes me sad...and I whenever I hear a Christmas song, a day or two after Christmas it makes me a little melancholy.

Well said my friend!

I generally love the holidays, but I HATE having to travel with two small children, dogs, etc. All our family lives up north, so it's right up I95 through the worst stretch of roadway in the entire country (Washington, Baltimore, Philly). I guess I should be thankfull I don't have to go through NYC or Boston...

Love: Seeing family. Christmas traditions such as picking out a tree, making cookies, Christmas movies, etc. Time off of work. Giving people gifts. Holiday beer.

Hate: Visiting pretty much any store in the month of December. People who complain about the Holidays.

I love it a special time of being with family and friends. i hate that in populous world we live there are so many lonely, who find this special time of year the most lonely and sad time of year. The images of a Christmas tree with many presents underneath and a dinner table for a friends and family for many simply marketing dream, the reality is being alone amongst so many. For many this a sad and lonely most acute time of year.

I have always loved Christmas, so my biggest complaint about the season is how so many people feel the need to rant about how much they hate it. I don't even mean threads like this one specifically, just the complaints that seem to be pretty widespread everywhere I go.

I love how my son jumps out of bed every morning with a big smile on his face to find and thoroughly appreciate every cheap piece of crap I put in his advent calendar.

I hate what a pain in the ass it is to find 24 different cheap pieces of crap that can fit in a 1"x 2" window.

As a kid I loved the anticipation of what might be under the tree, tip toeing down the stairs to do a bit of recon before creeping back up, avoiding the third step and it's telltale squeak.

Waiting for my siblings to stir, getting the dog riled up so they woke up whether they wanted to or not.

Going into my parents room and gently trying to get my Dad to wake up, slowly trying to pull his eyelids up to see if he is awake, (warn 5 year old fingers usually would wake him up).

Once he was awake, we had to wait for what seemed like months while Mom made coffee and Dad lumbered around filling the stockings and drinking the Brandy we left out for Santa (Dad said he was lactose intolerant and the brandy helped settle his stomach from all the cookies). When everything was ready, we had to let my little sister descend the staircase first since we had run her over in years past, going through the packages like Rosie O'Donnell at a buffet. Those were my favorite memories of Christmas.

Now my favorite part of Christmas now is giving to my kids and friends, seeing the joy of little ones as they unwrap gifts is awesome. The downside is the commercialism that crowds out Thanksgiving and turns Late October through December into a selling season.
