EJ Manuel aiming his passes?

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly the accuracy issues were attributed to Fitz's footwork, with special attention paid to the throws on the left side of the field. Fitz had an entire offseason and good command of the playbook so I think he spent a good deal of time working on that problem but was not able to solve it. I think EJ also has some mental issues when the pocket is breaking down that leads to technique breakdowns and I think that's a little different than just plain footwork issues.

well, that and in fitzs case not having a strong enough arm. in ejs, you are likely right that its part mental. remember, his first 5 weeks he had colin brown escorting defensive tackles to his face.

I agree with the mechanics. Not sure why we never put him behind center, easier footwork there. That was also our best called game on offense. Tuel also had a better called game and was taking a number of snaps behind center.

I seriously think this is the root of all our problems on the offensive side of the ball. I don't get it

Rich Gannon has said the same thing repeatedly - during the Stillers game and for the past few days on Sirius NFL Radio. He can't understand why the Bills don't just put EJ under center...

Maybe this weekend! :D

People said the same thing about Fitz and Losman "it's just mechanics, it can be fixed!"

And yet, their failures in no way mean it can't be. It's not easy or automatic but we knew the guy was a bit of a project, and not a slam dunk perfect prospect or he wouldn't have lasted til our pick yet alone trade back.

having never played the position (pick-up games don't count B-) ), what is so different about being under center vs. shotgun/pistol?

EJ reminds me of Losman in this respect. JP always threw short and intermediate passes to receivers standing still, open....or a short screen pass. He rarely made those 25 yard frozen rope passes into tight coverage to a guy in stride. The one throw JP made to guys in stride was the occassional bomb (and i'm not convinced EJ is even good at bombs yet).

Anyway, I'm disappointed in our franchise QB but it's early. Hope he comes out and throws some darts down the field vs. NY no matter who we have playing receiver. I'm looking forward to seeing him raise his game over the last 6 games. He needs to pick it up big time on the road too.

EJ's lower body mechanics have been well-noted and they are readily correctable. But he has to be patient in order to give himself a chance to properly set his feet in the pocket. From the waist up, his motion is about as mechanically perfect as you can hope for. Very efficient, especially for someone of his size and length. And it leaves his hand in a hurry. Which is what confounds me most about the comparison to Fitz, who has to wind up from the hip to get anything on the ball and takes all day doing so.

Well said … EJ definitely HAS the arm, and from the waist-up, his motion is beautiful. It seems like the shotgun work and/or knee injuries have enabled some laziness to creep into EJ's footwork.

Especially in that Steelers game, he was hanging back in the pocket … waiting for someone to open up … staring guys down … and (most importantly) NOT STRIDING forward into his throws. It’s as though his shoelaces are tied on every throw. All arm motion, no base. The ball tends to sail away when you do this, and it does not always get to that specific destination one may have had in mind.

He looks tentative on the knee, quite similar to what we saw from RGIII in week one. Perhaps he is still a guy who may fear an impact to a tender knee as he transfers his weight forward. Two knee injuries in half a year? … that would be understandable.

Perhaps forcing him to drop back from under center, away from the LOS, then have to set his feet and drive the ball forward would help him. Picture Jimbo stepping into a throw … you just knew Reed was going to be hit IN STRIDE over the middle whenever Jim did that.
