American Indian group wants the Cleveland Indians name changed

Recommended Posts

but it may appeal to American Indians, so why not name a team after the pale face?

Hell, while we're at it, lets honor the Chinese with a team called the yellow bellies...

Who cares about what a tiny percentage of the population that consists of NA might like? The Chinese don't even like football, but if you want to recognize them maybe a name like Laundryettes might be appropriate?

Clearly Redskins is not a name American Indians ever wanted to be called in the 1st place.

So what?

Since when do NFL teams need permission from people who don't have anything to do with the NFL before choosing their team names? You're an idiot.

When the teams named after the people you speak of and they don't approve of the name in the 1st place.

So the Vikings have a lot of polling to do if they want to keep their name, huh?

You're an idiot.

How many people consider themselves a "viking." Are there really modern day vikings out there? Do Scandanavians really associate with the label or just that crazy conservative guy in Norway. The Minnesota Bezerkers would be a better fit!

Again, I am really not against the names, just the images and who should have control over those images. If a team uses the likeness of somebody and that person/culture says they don't like it... Then the group whos' image or culture is used should be in control of that image being portrayed... It goes for everything including the ancestors of Buffalo Bill Cody.

It is all about control.

So we don't want to offend anybody

I never said I didn't want to offend anybody. I have no problem w/offending some people. What is this business "anybody?"

Cleveland or Washington, etc... Should use this guy as a mascot... Sure looks red:

If I was the owner of the Atlanta Braves, I would offer to change the name only if the New York Yankees did the same.

And what about the NFL's recent efforts to promote itself in the UK. Are the Brits offended by having a team named the Patriots? For that matter, considering that many Native American tribes sided with the British in the Revolutionary War, are they offended by the Patriots name?

Gotcha. Equal rights for all but some are more equal than others

I never took you for a whiner.

I have it on good authority that Bob Costas !@#$s his mother

Wow, just wow!

What else can I say?

:D

About as many as consider themselves a "Redskin."

I got it on good authority that Mike Shanahan considers himself a "Redskin." What else would you call him? Why not use his likeness on Washington's helmets?

As far as Redskins go, calling attention to skin color is the problem in my opinion. A vote should be taken at all reservations across the nation to determine how American Indians feel about the name.

Then honor the outcome...

Racist! The People were here before Vespucci and they do not come from the subcontinent of India. They're no more "American Indians" than you are intelligent.

I understand that PETA is preparing legal challenges to other NFL team names, e.g., Lions, Ravens, Dolphins. The thinking behind the legal actions is that the scorn attached to the teams in general as well as individual players may have a negative impact on animals in zoos in those cities.

OK, so not exactly the case at the moment, but almost as whiggy as the Redskins thing. (Use of the word "whiggy" is not meant to disparage a former US political party.)

Does anyone care that this thread has been dominated by a troll, and youins just sucked up his bsjizz?

Isn't every person on the anti-Redskins bandwagon is a troll? Or is it just the most amazing coincidence ever that all these people suddenly realized after decades of following/covering football that this abhorant injustice was staring them in the face?

Or perhaps we have just evolved to this point?

The USA is a melting pot, all races, cultures, religious choices brought together and melted down to stand as one. The reason it works is because regardless If you are of a majority or minority your beliefs will be honored and respected.

In some cases sacrifices have to be made...

So, under your scheme I now am a black cracka who wears a yarmulke that prays to the holy spirit but in the direction of Mecca 5 times a day and also wants to throw Joe into the volcano? Why do you come to PPP and post? Is it like self-flagellation ritual you must endure?

So because I live here I have to respect and honor the beliefs of everyone? What flying rainbow farting unicorn did you just fly in on? So I have to honor and respect: NABMBLA, the KKK, the Westboro Baptist Church, the 911 Truth Movement, Scientologists and members of the Screen Actors Guild?

That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time.

Does the KKK or NABMBLA sound like it has anything to do with religion, culture or ethnicity to you Chef?

Surprise................................................................................not really

Documents: Anti-Redskins Indian leader not a legitimate member of his tribe

The American Indian leader spearheading the campaign to change the name of the Washington Redskins is not a legitimate member of the tribe he leads, according to a New York State Assemblywoman, but rather an Obama crony who is raking in casino money and paying back only small stipends to his tribe members.

Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, who is also the CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, is not recognized in his position by the Grand Council of Chiefs governing the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. Halbritter is not a legitimate member of the Oneida tribe, Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney told the Daily Caller.
