08.30 – Ravens at Bills Game Notes

- The three highest graded players were Da’Norris Searcy (+3.9), James Ihedigbo (+3.7) and Aaron Williams (+3.5)

- The three lowest graded players were Joe Flacco (-7.5), Gino Gradkowski (-4.1)and E.J. Manuel (-3.0)

- The Bills used the Option on 11 of their rushing attempts. Out of it Manuel ran the ball four times and the back seven times. Manuel picked up 12 yards here, including one play where he fumbled and another that had yards taken off for a hold downfield.

- While it was a big day for Torrey Smith with 166 yards, it did take 54 routes to pick them up. That gave him 3.07 yards per route, a number bettered by Robert Woodswho scored a 3.2. What’s more there was more for him on the field with some more accurate quarterback play.

- Providing small consolation for the Ravens was the play of Arthur Jones in run defense. With the Bills getting two bodies on Haloti Ngata for most of the game he took advantage of one against one work with a healthy five defensive stops against the run. His first five of the year.

The funny thing is, their OL did not lose anybody, but they had a devil of a time protecting him. I do think that was in part because Flacco has lost a lot of his reliable targets.

 

I'm happy for the win, but a fully healthy Rice, Pitta and Jones might have made this a much tougher game.

I am not downplaying a win. I'm simply saying that Flacco, being called a "$100 million quarterback," is a bit harder to criticize with few of his familiar weapons at his disposal.

A little harsh, Zonabb. I think Zac was merely pointing out that Flacco's performance was adversely influenced by Gradkowski's poor play.

 

"Correlation" isn't just a technical mathematical term. In fact, it was a word in regular English long before the math geeks took it over. Zac used it to point out that poor protection by an offensive lineman often goes hand-in-hand with poor QB productivity. It's a fair, if obvious, observation and a correct use of the word.

Not to mention that he made the game-saving tackle on the 70-yard bomb to Torrey Smith...no small feat catching up to him and bringing him down. The difference between 3 and 7 on that drive ended up giving us the win.

I think one of the reasons the play doesn't stick out is because it was a 74 yard play against? But yeah, I had the same feeling when Williams tackled him. Was thinking we'd do well to hold them to the FG.

Letting QB Joe Flacco manage the game while pounding the ball and playing great defense. My take is they tried to take advantage of the Bills injuries in their secondary, and got burned for it.

 

This week the Ravens OC forcing Joe Flacco into 50 passes vs 5 rushes for Ray Rice is so very Gailey-esque. 9 total rushes for the Ravens.

 

 

 

To me It doesn't matter what EJ did in the game as he is a rookie and did enough to win. The Bills O line played much better this week and Eric Wood was dominate. Kiko gets my vote for MVP

EJ is definitely having some ups and downs as you would expect a rookie, but it definitely seems like he has made plays that have not counted due to penalties and drops that weren't his fault. That probably happens with all QB's, but as a fan, its encouraging.

 

The pass to Chandler and Woods for the TD stand out. Both were very nice plays by EJ.

Brady has done well enough. Flacco has Torrey Smith who is a very good to excellent receiver. Certainly better than anyone on the Pats.

 

If a Bills QB had the same year I would be happy, but I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that he is a special QB. He throws a nice deep ball, but other than that he is just adequate. I think it's plenty fair to judge him right now.

If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle...but...anyone who watched that game Sunday saw a Bills team that decidedly outplayed their opponent, and the final score was misleading. EJ not diving for a 1st down on the FG drive in the 1st quarter. Lee Smith falling down. Woods "bobbling" a TD. EJ underthrowing Woods in the 4th. They left a lot of points on the field, which is something a young, developing offense is bound to do. But they are improving, and they played without a number of key players on defense (as did Baltimore on offense). The Ravens' defense was healthy, though, and the Bills clearly were able to exploit some things. We are seeing some good coaching out there, and as the team gets healthier and the offense gets more reps, I don't know why one wouldn't expect to see continued improvement.

I should have clarified better. After the team name "BUF" is the number of snaps so far, and the next number is the cumulative PFF player grade over the first 4 games.

 

John Murphy had the COO of PFF on yesterday, and even he admitted you have to take their grades with a grain of salt. The grades can be misleading but they do have a consistent process they follow so they have some value IMO.
