clearwater cadet Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Just saw on roto world, the bills are not going to let bryd get away, he will be tagged if needed.
Maddog69 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 If they keep Byrd (which I hope they do), I can't see them being a legit contender to sign LaRon Landry. They can't possibly spend $12m on their starting safeties with all of the other needs elsewhere, right?
JPS Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Invest a disproportionate amount of resources to the defensive backfield? The Bills?? Nah....

But they could plug LB and WR with draft choices. On 2/21/2013 at 3:58 PM, JPS said: Invest a disproportionate amount of resources to the defensive backfield? The Bills?? Nah.... hahahahahaah. never!

clearwater cadet Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Happy about Byrd, I think Andy is going to walk, I can't see putting big money into a guard, it seems you can cover up for poor play in the interior of the line if needed.

In other words is it better to invest in a free agent LB so we have one good one, invest in one good safety, one good pass rusher, etc? Or is there more value in being totally solidified in one area? I don't know the answer but I believe Pettine will figure it out.
Meathead Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 hopefully they can sign one of their two big fas before needing to use a tag, then they can use the tag as leverage against the other one to make a deal. players dont like the tags bc they are at risk to losing their long term payday to injury, which is why a deal almost always gets done before or soon after it is used. but if they cant get one signed before then, somebody is going to walk and thats most likely cialis

Unless there is a "want to play for the Bills" attitude by one of them before the deadline, the reality exists that one leaves. I too believe it will be Levitre. The only other scenario I see possibly playing out is if Byrd starts to believe the reports he will be franchised and is willing to sign prior to a negotiation process under the tag. Then of course we could franchise Levitre. To me the linchpin behind this comming to fruition is Byrd signing. I believe Levitre is dead set on testing the market.

Maddog69 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I don't think they would franchise Levitre even if they got Byrd signed today. I think they will negotiate with Levitre and he will have to decide if he wants to stay here for below market value or sign with the highest bidder (which I don't think will be Buffalo). I like Levitre and think he is good, but I think spending 8-9m on a G is not something the Bills can afford to do.
marauderswr80 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Who was the last player tagged by the Bills?

marauderswr80 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I was going to say the Bills are not really known for tagging players!

We have too many priorities to take care of and not enough funds to take care of it with.

Over the last 10 years, there have been three times when the Bills have let their DB with the best combination of youth + proven accomplishment go first-contract-and-out. After that happens, they'll typically use early picks on replacements for the departing DBs. Another possibility is to hold onto one's best DBs for the entirety of their useful careers. Other than McGee, I can't think of a particularly good Bills' DB who remained with the team for an extended length of time. (At least not in the last 15+ years.) The fact that they seem interested in holding onto Byrd (as opposed to letting him go first-contract-and-out) is a good thing.

I believe Levitre is dead set on testing the market. thats what i was trying to say but apparently didnt do a very good job. byrd should realize he has less leverage than levitre bc he plays at a position that is harder to replace, so he should be aware the bills are certain to franchise him if he doesnt sign. in that case, theres really no reason for him to not get down to business and just get the contract done. most players dont like being in limbo so he might instruct his agent to just get on with it thats pretty iffy though and he might not mind just sitting back and letting it unfold. if thats the case then yeah the bills likely lose the oppty to put similar pressure on levitre. thats why ive said since the middle of last season its most likely that we are going to lose levitre. if they cant franchise him i just dont think its a good idea to overpay at this time and they should let him cash in huge with somebody else
