ESPN, Hank Williams Jr. part ways

Recommended Posts

+ 1. I was sick of Hank already.

He did call "him" the enemy. I'll bet you a nickel he wasn't talking about Boehner.

PTR

Yeah, it was easily arguable that Hank was merely using the rhetorical devices of "analogy" and "hyperbole" to drive home the point that Obama and Boehner have a contentious relationship.

But Hank, being Hank, instead of pointing that out, or suggesting "Maybe I was comparing Boehner to Hitler, did you ever think of that?" chose to argue "Obama's the enemy!" :wallbash:

But then, no one's ever accused Hank of being anything other than a coked-out redneck halfwit, or suggested he had a modicum of common sense.

Anyway, now that we're once again in PPP land, let the marketplace dictate the fate of the least talented Hank Williams this earth has produced.

Not quite yet. So there are still no idiots posting this thread.

I just don't see any issue with Hank or Juan. Employment used to be like a marriage contract, then it became like an engagement...now its "here's a few bucks while I screw you over and be gone when I get out of the shower." Juan and Hank were just a little slow in figuring that out.

Such a bull **** move by ESPN. I'm pissed. Screw ESPN. They made their point by suspending him 1 game, that's all they had to do.

Proud Hater of ESPN

Ummm....he quit because they pulled his song that one night. There was no "move by ESPN".

[assuming sarcasm wasn't applied]

It's all about ratings, my friend. Once they get a few complaints, the number of viewers drop...hence, the ratings take a hit. Most people would forget about it by the end of the season, but some wouldn't and that's all that matters. If it was NBC, CBS, CNN, or Nickelodeon, they'd all do the same thing.

Nevertheless, I liked the song. It was a Monday Night Football staple for years. When they tried doing a different singer each week one season, it was horrible...I couldn't get into it. I guess I'm too much of a traditionalist, but I thought it was catchy and worth keeping.

It's not all about ratings, it's also about advertising $$. This is simply a football game, not a political controversy. Hank half-wittingly decided to tie his celebrity to some controversial political statements that overshadow the football game.

ESPN is trying to show an simple, enjoyable football telecast, sponsors are trying to sell products to the viewers, not associate their brand with a political controversy.

I realize the gut reaction is to call the sponsors "spineless" but they spend millions in advertising and if those $$ are turning off potential customers why should they do that? They also don't want to have to spend $$ in damage control from consumer groups. It's understandable why Hank is no longer associated with the program.

They'll get some other mindless, catchy tune to replace it. Maybe Faith Hill will get promoted.

Which are determined to no small degree by...

The color scheme use by graphics artists to create the network logo.

Or ratings. I forget which.

Higher ratings = more viewers = larger potential backlash/alienation if controversy gets associated with your product. Take a large risk, pull sponsorship, or jettison controversy/risk and continue getting what you paid for?

He clearly doesn't know what free speech is. It comes with consequences. If you say something stupid, you need to face up to it. He is still very free to say something stupid again, just not as an associate of MNF.

The no-talent assclown is clearly a moron.

Oh please, are you kidding me? Free speech only comes with consequences when a conservative says something stupid. Note that none of these people ever faced "consequences" for their words and speech...

I'm tired of the liberal wussification of this country. Where it's only ok to publicly hurt one's feelings as long as the target is on the right. I applaud Hank Williams Jr. for telling ESPN to go shove it.

How about fox news always dissing Ron Paul, consistently the most conservative republican candidate? Explain these

C'mon man. "Dissing" is much different then inflammatory hateful rhetoric. There really is no comparison.

Just today, Nancy Pelosi said "God Bless them" in regards the wall street protesters, but back when she was speaker of the house and the tea party was starting a real grass roots political movement she accused them of wearing swastikas. Again, there was no outcry for the hateful rhetoric by someone who was third in line to the oval office, no consequences.

Please let's keep it real. Freedom of Speech isn't truly "free" if it's a one way street, is it. Yet censorship for one side is what we currently have today.

I really liked Ron Paul, until his comments about an impeachment over killing an American citizen. A guy running for president should have a working knowledge of the Constitution

5th amendment provides for due process for americans so it is a defendable interpretation of the constitution. I agree it's tricky because the guy was openly al Qaeda. Paul's stated objection was the precedent set that American citizens can be assassinated when a president deems them a threat, and how over time incrementalism could end up with frightening implications at home, like for example deeming members of the media threats. Can't totally dismiss that, look what incrementalism has done to our budget.
