Breaking out CJ

Recommended Posts

CJ needs to learn how to block or he won't see any increased time out there. They

need to bring in Thurman to teach him the finer points of picking up a blitz.

C,mon guys, the Bills have a legit great back in fast freddy, he can do it all. run-block-pass protect-receive All Spiller need do is watch and learn.

Whats scary is that Spiller was named starter last season for the opener, didn't suffer and injury that I'm aware of and yet the Bills only ran him a few times. He only had 127 yards rushing all season after being named the starter above Marshawn Lynch

Some say he had problems learning protections, routes, finding holes and learning the offense in general in terms of alerts and at the line calls. Even if this kid learns the offense this year I wouldn't expect him to be an every down back, he is like a Reggie Bush 3rd down specialist. Whats kinds funny is that Fred Jackson already filled that role brilliantly. The Bills should have been looking for a replacement for Lynch in a big bruising power RB The RB taken in the draft this year another 3rd down clone, special teamer so I have no idea what this staff is thinking. Nix and Gailey were so immersed in rebuilding the defense that they almost ignored the offense, I don't see this offense improving this year.

I long for the good old days when Buffalo had a great running in Thurman Thomas, they ran to set up the pass...and nobody could stop them either!

I don't remember CJ outrunning very many defenses last year.

So that means he's not the fastest guy on the field? Ever hear about these things called angles, holes or blocks? Sometimes they have an effect on someone outrunning a defense. There's a bunch of defenses that don't have guys that can run a 4.32. Hence, he's the fastest man on the field vs all of those teams. It's pretty simple.

I disagree with the comment pertaining to them drafting a big bruising back instead of a 3rd down type. While he may fit the "criteria" for a 3rd down back due to his small frame and recieving skills, we drafted him because of his home run capability. Fred anne lynch are good between the tackle runners (fred is good running anywhere IMO), but they lacked the ability to blow a defense away with speed. Speed is the reason the drafted CJ. Not to become a 3rd down type guy. Home runs

I like the way you think. Fred Jackson is able to slip through smallest of cracks and then just keep his legs churning for extra yards. That's his strength. CJ's strength is his quick burst and change of direction. He excels at making people miss in the open field. Chan had his hands full with a whole new offense last year and could not spend a lot of time finding ways to get CJ in open spaces on the field. Remember he was a rookie. Look for that to change this year.

Am I the only person not concerned about CJ Spiller? Unless he gets hurt, the kid is going to be special. Lots of rookies don't pick everything up immediately, but the talent is sick and he seems to be a conscientious, hard-working guy.

I'll eat crow if I'm wrong, but I just don't see it happening.

Naw, your not the only one. I have faith in him too. After struggling early last year, Chan just decided to go with his more productive veteran, Fred. I am certain that with a year more of experience, Chan will find more ways to get him involved.

No concern here. I think he'll contribute a lot more this year, but freds our guy. He should get at least 70% of the carries with CJ mixing it up in the running game, receiving and returns. I think he'll be better pass blocking than last year, which will allow him to see the field more. I'm excited to see what he does this year.

He's the leader of the tsw trolls. Most have acknowledged this fact and don't take him seriously. TrollReed83 more like it. I considered ignore, but sometimes I enjoy calling him out on his ridiculous posts, just to see how asinine his reply will be. Use him and his posts as a tool for laughter, you might enjoy his bs

Good tip, thank you.

The things I'm hearing about Spiller not understanding the plays after Fitzpatrick would call 'em in the huddle do worry me. How dedicated are you that you can't show up knowing the playbook cover-to-cover?

I hope last year was a wakeup call and C.J. understands the preparation it takes to succeed here. Eball is right, the talent is sick. He has a physical advantage over everybody else, you'd think big plays would be ahead.

In college he was able to make it to, and turn the corner. He found last year that's not so easy in the NFL. He certainly has the speed and is a good open field runner. If Gailey can figure out a way to get him into a little space with the ball he could have a big impact this season. If not, this season will be a lot like last season regarding Spiller.

He needs to learn to hit the holes and run the freakin ball. Fred Jackson has no problems running without a H Back so why does Spiller need that treatment? No more excuses.

It is clear that the NFL didn't come as easy to CJ as he thought it would. Dre is right, CJ had that awful habit of reversing field in an attempt to find more open space rather than just going forward. Dre is right, no excuses ... time for coach and player to figure out where his talents fit the team.

However, I think he has the talent and Chan has been thinking since the season ended of how to get things right for Spiller's abilities. Jackson is the primary RB but if we use Spiller like we have used Roscoe it adds a new dimension for both coverage units and those attempting to stop the run.

I want to see some plays broken up field by Spiller ... the combined yards will be there with kick-off's but we can't wait another year to see if he is a weapon and my prediction is that his jersey sales will be increasing by mid-season as he figures out the NFL.

GO BILLS ....

Run this guy 15 times a game, throw to him 5 times a game for the whole season and give him a chance to make ir break in year two rather than waiting 5 years. use the friggin guy already like a top ten pick rather than a 5th round change of pace guy. PR and KRs, get someone else for all I care. I want a RB drafted in the top 10 picks or so to be an everydown guy. If not this was a wasted pick once again.

Would you rather Jackson or spiller get more carries?

Getting spiller 15 rushes and 5 catches is gonna be near impossible unless our offense can continuously churn out 1st downs. While I think we'll be better offensively, 20 touches each game isn't gonna happen. It may happen occasionally, but not consistently imo

CJ should easily double that this season

Thanks Senator. When I said the 1500 yards I actually meant from scrimage and not all purpose. I think CJ is gonna have a great year. Time will tell and If I really wanted to be pessimistic I could always say he sucks and will never be an every down back like so ma y but I think he's gonna be something special. And I think This year will just scratch the surface of his potential. I can honestly see him being as dominant under Gailey as a Chiefs team with Priest Holmes.

CJ will need a better offensive line, will need to improve his pass blocking (at least a little) and will need to master the weight room. If we improve at the tackle positions, I think this should be his breakout year, assuming he is going to have a breakout year.

I wonder what nuttery could happen if we line up in a 4WR set with Roscoe and CJ running around in the middle...

Johnson, Evans, Nelson, Roscoe at wideout with Spiller out of the backfield, or Spiller as a slotman with Freddie out of the backfield...

Plenty of weapons for Mr. Harvard and ole ball coach to play with
