Bills May Luck Out!

This is my first ever post on the Stadium Wall and it's long overdue.... I've followed this site religiously for the last decade and never posted because I used to cover the Bills beat and wasn't "allowed to". So bare with me, but be honest with your feedback, because I respect the opinions on this site.

I'm as anxious as any Bills' fan with the #3 pick... It's been a long time coming for Buffalo to be this high in the draft order. And trust me, I know... I was preparing to graduate high school the year the Bills used the first overall pick to select Bruce Smith in the 1985 draft!

But let's take a moment and think of another first round draft scenario for the Bills. Every guru, every analyst and a boatload of fans have weighed in on what Buffalo will do with the 3rd pick of the draft. Most everyone will admit that it's a roll of the dice with Cam Newton. If u watched his performance at the combine as closely as I did, u have to admit that he should have stayed home. I personally think that with time and patience, Cam can make an NFL team and a city proud. But last week, he cost himself a lot of money and the benefit of the doubt that most teams gave him entering the combine.

Newton hurt himself with his arm, his feet and most of all his mouth. The $50 Million Dollar Question is "Where was his agent? I mean, everybody was wondering where Ryan Mallet's agent was when the kid was hung out to dry on the podium the other day. "Did u do drugs? Or didn't u? We're the mass media... We can keep a secret, rookie!"

In Newton's case, I literally felt sorry for him when he got up on the NFL Network set and tried to apologize to the football world for ignorantly calling himself an "entertainer and an icon". What he didn't know was that he looked liked an even bigger fool when he told Rich Eisen, Marshall Faulk & Mike Mayock that he needs to work on his back pedalling and his 3, 5 and 7-step drops before his pro day on Tuesday.

Are u kidding me? How does he expect to be a top 5-10 pick when he's almost never taken a snap from under center? Following the camp, it's become brutally obvious that Cam is way behind when it comes to having the footwork to be an effective pro-style QB... But admittimg it on national television is first round suicide. I almost thought Marshall was going to cover up Cam's mouth when he went on to say that he was "inconsistent on his throws because he was throwing to wide receivers from the MAC" and a number of conferences outside the SEC. It was like, "What are u trying to say, Cam? Are these guys so inferior that u had to toss passes 20 feet over their heads?" Big mistake, Cam. Big mistake! And it's not that u don't have good intentions. It's the fact that your media rep is sleeping on the job!

Cam Newton tried mightily to save face with the cameras rolling. He even tried to save face in his 15-minute interviews with various teams. But the problem was simple... He didn't come prepared and his entourage thought that he could pass the combine with his swagger and his smile.

Sadly, Newton closed his NFL Network interview by putting his foot even deeper in his mouth. When asked who his mentors were, he said his "family, friends and the marketing professionals" who helped him secure an endorsement deal with Under Armor. Ugh!!!

Of course, there are those who think that it's safer to pick from an impressive number of defenders in the early part of the draft. I find it hard to argue with them, after watching the Bills "swiss cheese" front 7 the past few seasons. And then there are some who think that Buffalo should mirror what Bill Beliceck and the dreaded Patriots do year in & year out. They sign stars on the downside of their careers who are released or come cheap. They find teams with specific needs that are in bad draft positions and put pressure on them to give up the farm for one of the Patriots' higher picks... Or they pile up extra picks by trading their own players with some mileage left on their tires.

The Pats have won 3 Super Bowls with Brady and Beliceck. It can be debated that thy won all 3 before they were caught in their videotaping scandal. But there's no denying that Beliceck is a draft master and free agent-acquiring madman. Couple that with fact that New England remains competitive year in an year out and you have a recipe to emulate.

So if u can't beat 'em, join 'em. Let somebody else put training wheels on Cam Newton's cleats. Let others draft players that have to learn how to cover tight ends like Von Miller.... And pass on quarterbacks with red flags like Mallet and Jake Locker.

Instead, do the sly thing that nobody thinks your smart enough to do. Trade the #3 pick to some sucker that's willing to give u their first round pick and an extra 2nd and go get this team a defense that will dominate for the next few years. Or better yet, trade the #3 pick to a team that you're certain will be near the top of next year's draft. In return, the Bills should demand a pair of picks this year and their trade partner's first founder next year. Then if u want your franchise QB next year, you go get him by trading BOTH your first round picks and perhaps a 3rd rounder for the TOP pick in the draft. I can hear Commissioner Goodell's voice now. "... and with the first overall selection of the 2012 draft... the Buffalo Bills select... ANDREW LUCK, QUARTERBACK... STANFORD!

excellent take and one that i also share on cam. the espn insider piece regarding his drop backs, his footwork etc is what i observed from the games i watched cam in this year. he could end up as a star in a few years but the odds are not great. he is a coin flip which luck is not. however, buddy nix is on record stating that he is unlikely to trade the pick. he wouldn't call the saints back on marshawn and i believe he has only 1 trade as a gm (marshawn). a trade of the 3rd pick is highly unlikely but i agree, trade the pick, amass a large amount of picks like BB in new england and the masses of madden franchise players. sure, the bills screw up first round picks and a lot of mid round picks. but if you throw enough at the wall, eventually some will stick. the key, as you state, is to have a lot to throw as it increases the likelihood of stickage

I posted basically the same exact blueprint to get Luck in 2012. A lot of people believed you can't really bank on getting Luck unless you happen to end up with the #1 pick. Even if you were to offer 2 #1's, plus additional pick there is a good chance the team picking #1 overall, will be all over Luck. I don't think that should stop you from bettering your chances of getting Luck if all the cards fall right. There is always an outside chance the team that selects #1 overall next year already has a QB they like, doubtful, but it's possible. Any team that takes Newton or Gabbert this year could very likely have a poor season and not be in the market for Luck next year.

I'm quoted as saying I'm all in on Luck, he's a future All-Pro, so anything to better our chances of getting him is a good thing. I'd love to be able to come away with a 2012 1st round pick, by trading back a touch this year. Move down to pick 8-10, pick up a 2nd and 4-5th this year and a 1st next year. That'd be a ton of ammo to come up to #1 next year for Luck if the team at #1 isn't in the market for a QB.

Thanks for your reply. Better than the first one I got. I'm sure Bangarang is as tired as most of us are about Cam Newton ALL THE TIME... I understand & feel for him when there's a 30 page post on TSW with that very title. But I read that thread from top to bottom and very few posters said anything about Cam's ineptitude in front of the camera. As somebody who's been in front of one before, I can tell u there's no getting around being unprepared. If you are, viewers will know.

Cam was literally flying by the seat of his pants up there. The sad thing about it is, I bet his agent put him up to it. I'm sure he coached Cam to give a scripted response to questions about his "entertainer and icon" quote, but didn't know how persistent sports anchors can be when they have a young signal caller to themselves and want to know why he can't hit "the broadside of a barn with a bag of rice!"

Either Cam's agent never saw those punches coming or he warned Cam about them, scripted the responses and Cam forgot the lingo or chose not to read what was written!

Believe me, with that Heisman Trophy smile of his, Newton fooled some of those viewing, but didn't fool a college football analyst like Mike Mayock, who earns every penny of his paycheck from NFL Network. I mean, the guy eats, breathes and bleeds football 7 days a week, 365 days a year and knows when you're lying through teeth when u say you're ready to make the transition to the next level.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing when Eisen tried to throw Cam a lifeline with a tweet question from a fan. Mayock, who was obviously eager to go for Newton's jugular, chuckled at Eisen's awkward seguay and shook his head in disbelief when Rich explained that he was just following the network's script!

and then there's the issue of cam newton living and working in orchard park. really, is this a match? especially for a man bent on getting as much publicity as possible, endorsements etc. not only is the market here unfavorable for that but consider the southtowns demographic. who is more likely to be happier here? cam or a guy like luck? the question must be asked: if the bills take cam would he even sign a contract to play here? and will his father be the dominant influence, again, on where cam plays as archie was for eli?

Any team we are likely to get to draft highly in 2012 is already drafting high. That would be a major problem.

Also, the idea that you do not try to win every year is a flaw. It is a longshot for us to win the Super Bowl next year but that doesn't mean there is no reason to win every game we can.

We have a transitioning AFCE and many people do not see it. No longer does NE rely on their mid-grade running games that can churn out yardage like jogging thru butter against us and get the key possessions after strong defensive plans. NE now relies upon a defense that bends and no breaks and gives the entire boat to the offense. The TE's are the best tandom in the NFL and only going to get better, combined with an RB who can get open with great vision and a WR that is probably among the best for his role in the last 10 years - they have potential to win a lot of games. I fully expect them to bring in a bruising powerful back and as a pure football fan with no allegiance to the Bills would be impressed if they bring in Mark Ingram.

The Jets have a roster that turns over more then the decks in a casino and worth just as much. They have their integral pieces that they pay well and a roster full of spot fillers to join them. Where NY would always seem to pace themselves in the season, finding enough success in all areas to win games they are refininig their strengths. Where NE beats us with spreading the ball around to the targets, making the field twice as wide and that 10 yards to the first down seem as if it is 20, the Jets chip away with their offense. If NE is playing possession football the Jets have a pick and hammer offense. They are adapting their game to a successful field marshall in Sanchez who has a lot of learning to do and seems to be on a slower learning curve then they would hope. If we have to worry about anything with the Jets then we have find a way to get rough with their WR's. Their defense is something we will just have to pound at because right now I do not know how we can use what we have to beat it.

With the Fins we simply have to play better ball then we do on average against a team that will take every chance it can to trip us and then drop an elbow. Their offense is falling apart it would seem but there is not as much truth to that as people believe. Their OL is much like ours and they have two RB's who can perform. If they can get themselves a speedback or scatback then they'll be able to compete against the Jets who are only getting slower and the Patriots are weaker on D then in the past. If the Dolphins need anything then they someone to take the pressure off of the QB. They have the line, they have Ricky Williams who isn't a bad pass catcher, they need TE and they need WR who they can pop the ball out to that will keep possessions.

We have no way to combat the Patriots TE's. We do not have the speed and ability to cover the Jets WR's as tightly as we need to - mostly related to the DL not creating enough pressue. We do not have the DL to get to thru the pocket in Miami. When it comes down to it, it is clear we need DL and an LB that can cover the TE. I am crossing my fingers we scratch enough of the dirt and dust off the LB corps to find that diamond in the rough - a player who will serve as the lynch pin and corner stone.

Why weren't you "allowed" to post?

Again, i can't believe some of you believe these scenarios you propose.

So the Bills will find a team "certain" to be horrible next year to trade with. (not sure how the FO is supposed to figure that out, as teams routinely swing their records around in one season nowadays).

Then trade away our #3 pick this year to this hypothetical certain-to-be horrible team, swapping it for their 2012 first round pick and lower round picks in 2011. How often does this happen? I'd really like to know; i can't recall deals like this going down, unless one of the teams invloved doesn't have a same-year 1st round pick to swap for whatever reason.

These pipe dreams make no sense to me, just my opinion.

And suggesting Cam Newton wouldn't fit in with the Orchard Park "demographic"? Come on man.

Oh look another thread about Cam Newton and trading down.

Except this one gives concrete examples of why he's not an NFL ready QB, as opposed to the usual knob-slobbering and "no he's NOT a running QB!!!" nonsense.

But I agree people really need to stop with proposals like "trade down so we can trade up to #1 next year for Luck".

The only issue I have is this. Wasnt Locker going to be the number one pick last year and now may not be drafted in the first round? Why cant this happen to Luck?

STANFORD!

I agree about trading down and taking your chances next season on Luck. I don't want us to draft Newton for anything. I don't believe in 1 year wonders. I however don't think Buddy will trade down. I believe they will draft Peterson at 3. I also hope they address the trenches OL and DL. They both need alot of work.

Mayock is good, but Nawrocki is better. He's guessed the Bills 1st rounder correctly since Whitner in 06. Wait till his final mock comes out, and that's the guy!

So trade away potentially good draft picks on the outside chances that

1) Our trade partner will suck and end up with a high enough pick to give us our choice of any player we want (assuming that would be Andy Luck);

2) That Luck is not a 'flash-in-the-pan' and will continue to excel (in a relatively weak conference) without last seasons supporting cast of seniors;

3) Some career-ending injury (God-forbid) won't befall the kid, leaving the Bills with nothing but their dicks in their hands, when they could have used the high draft picks to add quality players this coming season.

Second dumbest idea I've ever read on TSW, only surpassed by the idiots that insisted our best strategy is to lose every game in order to guarantee a chance to draft the sophomore from Stanford.

The very notion that anyone still has Andy Luck on the brain, in the hopes of maybe beginning to improve two years from now rather than this season, is extremely puzzling to me. :wallbash:

BTW, welcome to the board!

EDIT: Regarding your thoughts on Kim Newton, I agree with you completely that the Bills should avoid him like 'the plague' - don't quite understand, though, why you feel sorry for the the guy just because of his continual proclivity to say stupid things, make poor decisions, and behave badly.

Welcome aboard. I agree that there are risks with Cam, just like most players, and that we really neeed to pay attenttion to that awful front 7 that we have.

You could have just said. I am with the Jerry Sullivan school of "losing on purpose" so we can get the lowest draft picks possible club.

1. Enough with the trade down nonsense. Nobody is going to be willing to give up most of their draft to get into the #3 spot. The few idiot candidates are, as always, Redskins and Raiders. Otherwise, and unless the Bills have a 3-team, Bill Polian gets Cornelius Bennet(and Shane Conlan, Nate Odomes, Leon Seals, Keith McKellar, House Ballard(in the 11th  )...now that's a draft in 1987), crazy trade in the making, it's time to put an end to the pie in the sky "trade down because I say so, even though we don't have a realistic trading partner" argument. No. Getting somebody's extra 2nd doesn't even come close to being good trade value. #3 pick should be a potential HOFer who, if the new CBA comes out the way I think it will, will be on your team for at least 5 years. That's not worth a 2nd alone, unless you are a moron.

2. Why do I care about Cam Newton's media "presence"? If anything, the fact that he is making obvious media mistakes, means he doesn't have a LaVarr Arrington type spin doctor telling him what to say. We didn't do so well with his client, Aaron Maybin, now did we?

3. I have managed many a 22-24 year old rookie in my time, and, they have a tendency to say all sorts of stupid things, mostly because they are nervous and don't know any better. So were we all at that age. But, I look past that and focus on their skill set. Is it good? Are they somebody who can take instruction? If they are too polished, there's a good chance that they are already at the highest level possible for them, and therefore, I don't want em. I need them move up 5-6 levels from where they are to be serviceable in what I do. In the same respect, the Bills aren't looking to hire a Heisman trophy winner, we are looking to hire a SB trophy winner.

Oh, and welcome :D. As I said, I am hard on rookies, but only because it makes them better. :P

Here's my take in response to the poster.

Cam Newton most certainly has handlers that are coaching him for his media time. In my opinion there's one of two things happening. And let me start by saying Cam Newton is self indulged.

1) The advice that he's getting is bad. He and his family may have surrounded themselves with people that think like them. And that the entire camp doesn't get it. Then when it comes time to present, he comes off as arrogant, they get support from certain people and it further entrenches their beliefs.

2) He's getting advice to not come off as arrogant and when it comes time to present, he reverts to his own thoughts and he butchers the media time. Because he's a self promoter and humbleness doesn't come very easy to him.

Did you ever meet someone that even when they are trying to be nice, they are an a hole? This is how I view Newton. Even when he tries to smile and act contrite, he sounds like an arrogant person.

The guy is not a natural leader and the more he tries the more his self indulgence gets exposed. The question is, is he so good that the leadership isn't needed and play on the field is enough for people to follow him. I am of the thinking that that is not enough in the NFL. I just don't see men like Levitre and Wood following and believing in a guy like Newton. But I believe he would get close to guys like a Desean Jackson type, that want to be "boys" with their QB. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but that I believe that's what a player like Newton is at his core. He's an incredible athlete and a physical specimen. He relies on that coupled with his arrogance as his form of leadership.

like the trade down idea,i have been professing that for a coons age.

in regards to your idea to acquire someone's pick next year thats not allowed without a cba. you can only trade picks in this years draft if a cba is not in place.

You take your best educated guess and keep your fingers crossed, there is no certainty. It's all a gamble, but it's just a game.

Welcome dcjoev, way to come out of the gate strong .... I like your thinking. If any of that actually works out, it would all be good, but the odds are long. Nonetheless, thanks for contributing to the conversation.
