Judging the draft specialists

I do not have this information but wouldn't it be interesting to review the 09 draftnics to see what they thought of Maybin and then determine theeir potential credibility for this years draft. If the Bills are going to go D line or LB at 3 then I think this is essential information since most of us get our preferences based on their writings not on our ability to scout.

Any thoughts?

Todd McShay was really high on Maybin. He had him going as high as #5 to Cleveland in some of his mock drafts.

I had Maybin as a marginal 5th round talent at best.

I know Mayock didn’t like Maybin at all, and McShay couldn’t get off his nuts.

But, many people, including me, think Maybin and Von Miller are very very similar. I would like to chart peoples opinions on Maybin and compare them to Miller.

I know Mayock likes Miller, but didn’t like Maybin at all. The Walter Football guy didn’t like Maybin and doesn’t like Miller I am pretty sure. Anyone who wants to dig that info up I would appreciate.

It was interesting looking back at the predictions, reactions, comments, etc from this gang of opinionated fans following the 09 draft. What's most interesting is that collectively, we at TBD got it right and One Bills Drive got it wrong - and not the first time. I didn't even remember chiming in on that thread til I saw my handle - and yep - I predicted BUST for Maybin.

I think in the list of all time Bills 1st round busts that include the likes of Booker Moore, Perry Tuttle, Terry Miller, Mike Williams, Reuben Gantt, AC Cowlngs, Tom Ruud, and John McCargo, Maybin has got be # 1 on the list as the worst pick ever. What a wasted pick. Meanwhile, Orakpo, the guy that many of us perferred over Maybin, is all-pro. Way to go (overpaid)Bills personnel guys.

The only comparisons that can be made between the two are size and speed. Miller is not maybin. I hope we take cam newton, but I wouldn't be terribly upset if we took miller. He brings more to the table than a quick first step

I am with you. Miller is much faster, quicker and more athletic (ie flexible, understands leverage, etc) than Maybin.

Miller has also started and produced at a high level for 2+ years in a tough conference whereas Maybin wasn't

even going to be a starter until the guy ahead of him got suspended for drugs. Maybin had one good year and

was still pretty athletic.

I don't see the comparison except that both were a bit undersized. Interestingly, Maybin has put on significant

weight, but still can't get on the field. I take that to mean that there are more important problems for him than

being "undersized".

I think the funniest thing in the thread was when Mayock was quoted as calling Maybin a 1 down player. Then someone says who is Mayock. Well 2 years later we now know Mayock was totally wrong calling Maybin a 1 down player-He's a NO DOWN PLAYER.

Mayock also said one year starter at Tennessee, Robert Ayers, would be the best defensive player in the draft. He has 2 career sacks and 46 total tackles. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/9282

Everyone had Maybin as a 1st rounder before the draft. Newsflash: pass rushing is such a premium that anyone who shows any ability will be in demand.

Im still trying to figure out why Maybin was in demand....

Well I'll admit to wanting the Bills to draft Robert Ayers because we were a Tampa 2 team at the time and I felt he was a perfect fit as a 4-3 defensive end…277 pounds, quick and athletic and uses his hands well.

Unfortunately for Ayers, Denver drafted him and tried making him into a 3-4 linebacker. He was about as successful as Chris Kelsay has been in that regard.

The good news for Ayers is that Denver is returning to a 4-3 scheme and he'll get a chance to prove he isn't a draft bust, playing his natural position of DE, which he played in college.

As for Von Miller, I was with Thoner for awhile on this one but after having watched more video, I really think he's a great player. Very athletic and explosive, great effort, and plays with reckless abandon. He reminds me a bit of Aaron Curry although slightly different build.

I think Miller could be a great player but I'm still not sure who I want the Bills to draft quite yet. I was thinking Dareus but I know this draft is quite deep in D-linemen and that we could probably find an excellent player at that position at #34.

I was no fan of the pick but I love the revisionist history. He has 16 sacks in his first 2 years of college football in a major conference. He was very raw and would have been a 1st round pick even if the Bills didn't take him. He hasn't produced but let's not act like he was a huge reach.

Plus if the Bills do cut him, some team will give him a shot. Teams are desperate for pass rushers.

I never bought the Ayers' hype and thought Mayock (who I really like) was way off. Why would a one year starter all of sudden produce at the NFL level? It's why I have serious doubts about Gabbert.

As for Miller, I like that he has a long resume of success but I don't think that's the way to go at #3. We have Moats, Merriman, and Maybin will get at least a camp. I think you need to go QB or big body defensive linemen with the pick.

I'm advocating for a qb this draft in our first round. But if the Bills decide to pick Miller it would be a reasonable pick. Although there might be some similarity in their physical stature they are far different types of players. What impresses me the most about Miller is that he has a tremendous instinct for the game. He can quickly diagnose plays and react to the play. Maybin doesn't have that ability. Once the ball is snapped he is clueless, not knowing where to go.

Another positive attribute of Miller is that he is not a one note player. He can adjust on the move and when he is engaged by a player he is able to counter and disengage. Both Maybin and Miller are superb athletes. However, Miller is also an excellent football player, something that Maybin is not and probably never will be.

IIRC, almost all the draft idiots had Maybin going somewhere around the 10-15th pick.

However, most of the smarter posters here hated the pick.

Interesting to read those post. The best one was "I'm getting that Donte Whitner- type sick feeling in my stomach". If only he was as good as Whitner, maybe he could get on the field.

I've posted this before.

McShay praised the pick and kept referring to Maybin's "upside."

Mayock didn't like the pick and said Maybin "couldn't stop the run in college" several times implying he wasn't big/strong enough. And as side note, I watched Mayock on NFL network the year we drafted JP Losman and he said JP "has the physical tools but the thing I question about him is his decision making." Talk about being clairvoyant. Mayock also predicted the Bills would draft Whitner.

The draft is an inexact science to be certain but Mayock's opinion carries the most weight IMO.

I’m not changing history. I didn't state he didn’t have the stats. I am saying, that I cannot fathom how someone could watch him PLAY (play, not just check out his stat sheet) and think that he was going to pressure the QB – at all – in the NFL. Go back and read any of my posts if you’d like, you won’t find any revisions.

Post links of draktniks that don't like 1st round prospects. Try to find a statement where they explicitly say the prospect isn't likely to do well in the NFL, they are very few and far between.

I've never seen someone come out with their guns blazing and says "this guys will be a bust"

Its all flip flopping and talking out of both sides of their mouths. They have to hedge their bets because 90% have no NFL experience of any kind. They have as much knowledge as many posters on this board.

If Thoner7, NoSaint, and San Jose put up their own draftnik site it would probably be better than most of the "specialists" out there.

The Truth is Maybi Maybin goes to the Giants, and with the way that team plays and coaches, he gets 10 sacks a season and this board adds Maybin, to the list of players the Bills "could have had" and are complaining about who ever the Bills took instead.
