February Movies: I Am Number Four, Just Go with It, & Unknown....

As the cold of Winter continues on, so do the less than spectacular movies at the cinemas. The month of February brings us the Super Bowl, St. Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, and the Oscars, all of which will have an impact on the box office. As the holdovers from last year fight for the Oscar gold, the new year of movies continues as the Garbage Season will finish before the bigger titles of Spring are released. Still there maybe something that may emerge from this month in a positive light.

One such possibility is the Disney/Dreamworks Sci-Fi "I Am Number Four". Nine alien teens come to Earth after their planet is destroyed by an enemy species. But soon discover that their enemy is now after them on Earth. The up-and-coming talent in front of and behind the camera, may just have what it takes to make this movie a pleasant surprise in early 2011. Starring Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, and Dianna Agron.

Adam Sandler is once again surrounded by hot women in, "Just Go with It". A guy convinces a mother of two to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife in order to woo the woman of his dreams. Also starring Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker & Nicole Kidman.

Liam Neeson headlines the thriller, "Unknown". Dr. Martin Harris awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one -- not even his wife -- believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. Also starring Diane Kruger, January Jones, Aidan Quinn, Frank Langella & Bruno Ganz.

A different type of action/thriller arrives in the form of, "Drive Angry 3D". A felon breaks out of hell for one last chance at redemption: to prevent the cult who murdered his daughter from sacrificing her baby in three days' time. He's aided by a young waitress and her ex-boyfriend's muscle car, and together the duo will have to face down the leader of the cult, the police, and a killer known as "The Accountant" -- who wants to return him to the Devil. Starring Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke & David Morse.

The Farrelly Bros. return to direct, "Hall Pass". Two married guys are given the freedom to engage in a week's worth of extra-marital affairs, though they get a little bent out of shape when their respective wives start having fun on their own, too.

Starring Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis & Christina Applegate.

After being pushed back for nearly a year, "The Eagle" finally gets a release date. In 140 AD, Roman soldier Marcus Aquila embarks on a quest to restore the reputation of his father, the one-time commander of Rome's Ninth Legion, who disappeared in the mountains of Scotland twenty years earlier. Starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell & Donal Sutherland.

In "Shelter", Forensic psychiatrist Cara Harding discovers that her new patient, David, has multiple personalities -- all of whom are murder victims. Shaking her faith and beliefs, she works to uncover the secret buried deep within David's mind in order to prevent more killings. Starring Julianne Moore & Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

"Gnomeo & Juliet", is an animated version of Shakespeare's play, where Gnomeo and Juliet are would-be lovers from rival garden-based families. Starring James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Jason Statham & Patrick Stewart.

In "The Roommate", College student Sara finds her safety jeopardized after she's assigned to a dorm room with a new roommate, Rebecca. Starring Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester & Cam Gigandet.

In "Sanctum", A diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to an unexplored cave system. Starring Rhys Wakefield, Allison Cratchley & Christopher Baker.

From the "Did we really need ANOTHER SEQUEL?! Department" comes, "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son". FBI agent Malcolm Turner and his nephew Trent go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. Starring Martin Lawrence & Brandon T. Jackson.

Finally, and you can't make this up, we get "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never". A look at Justin Bieber's early life, his rise to fame, and behind the scenes of his 2010 tour. His early life?

Calendar with trailers.

A movie based on a commercial based on a practical joke. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

I do happen to know the guys who perpetrated the original "traveling gnome" joke, and the lady who owned it (and ended up on Letterman with the gnome).

I feel like Liam Neeson could make just about any movie good.

I think the first time I ever saw Liam Neeson was in that preacher movie with Steve Martin and Deborah Winger back in the 90s. Aside from his absolutely riveting performance in Schindler's List soon after that, I was sort of luke warm to the guy. But he's really become one of my favorite actors over the past several years, I must admit. I thought he was great in Batman Begins, Love Actually, Taken, Kinsey, and most recently the A-Team. These are not all great FILMS, of course, but I enjoyed his performance in each of them. Being a Star Wars nerd, I also have to admit that starring as a Jedi in the first prequel scored big points....lol

BTW, guys, I just saw Social Network tonight...EXCELLENT film. I'm trying to get through the rest of the Best Picture nominees before the 27th, and so far here's my ranking:

1)True Grit

2)The Social Network

3)Toy Story 3

4)Inception

5)Winter's Bone

This week I plan to see 127 Hours and The Kids are Alright, and then hopefully next week I'll check out The Fighter and Black Swan. The King's Speech will prob be a dvd rental sometime later in the year.

From Spain, France & Mexico comes, "Even the Rain". As a director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamaba, Bolivia, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Luis Tosar & Karra Elejalde.

Finally from Canada comes, "Heartbeats". Close friends Francis and Marie meet Nicolas at a dinner party, and the trio begins to spend a lot of time together. Based on the reviews for Unknown, I think I'm going to skip it for now (maybe watch it on video). Instead we're going to go see True Grit. I'm not much of a western guy, but this one's supposed to be good so we'll see... Going tomorrow. :)

It's a good one. As good as Jeff Bridges is, Hailee Steinfeld is fantastic. She should have been nominated for Best Actress instead of Supporting Actress.

First thing I thought as well. She deserved to win best actress. Portman was good but not even close to this girl.

For my money, it deserved Best Picture far more than The King's Speech.

Shameless plug... My blog reviews on all 10.

(I cut-and-pasted some of what I wrote here on TBD in Mark's threads).

Having just snuck in "The Kids Are All Right" on Sunday before the awards, I have to say that was probably my #2.

Love the blog ... but you really wanted The Kids Are Alright for screenplay? Did you read it or just see it? Just curious.

If anyone has been to see the cute Gnome movie I would really like to see their review.

I think I'll have it on my blog within the next few days.

Have a feeling I'm going to be seeing it a lot, just as I've seen "cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" about 32,539 times with my niece....
