Von Miller or Quinn

Clay weighed in at 246 lbs at the 2009 Senior Bowl, so he was a good 9 lbs heavier than Von at this stage, and Clay was considered light at that weight to play OLB in the 3-4. He has since bulked up to 255 lbs and we obviously know how well he's fit in as an OLB.

Von Miller needs to put on a minimum of 15 lbs. to hold up in the NFL. At this moment in time he is too small for the 3-4. Can he pack on 15 lbs and keep his speed and athleticism? That's a question he needs to answer at the Combine. He blamed skipping meals and not eating enough at school for the reason he weighted in too light. I don't really buy it. In the end I think Von is a much better fit in a 4-3 despite 90% of the media saying he's a better fit in the 3-4.

If he comes in to the Combine weighing 243-247 and still looks the part I think a lot of 3-4 teams will be happy.

I actually think weight gets pushed to the side too much by fans when they see a player they like. There were serious concernes about Maybin's body structure and weight 2 years ago, and these concerns were very real. I'm not comparing Maybin to Miller directly, but they both have weight issues. At this point Von is a good fit for the 4-3, but he is very undersized for an OLB in the 3-4.

You make a good point about weight fluctuating during the season, but if you start the season weighing 255 and go down to 247 by seasons end that may work. If you start out at 237 and end the season at 230 you're going to be on IR or getting dominated by 300 lb OL, no question. You would think if Von Miller had the ability to carry an additional 10-15 lbs he would already be carrying it. I've seen his film, and I really like his pass rush ability, but you need to be stout against the run to play 3 downs in the NFL. At his current weight teams like the Pats, Jets and Phins will run all day at Von Miller, and I don't want another pass rush specialist with the #3 overall pick.

The line that really befuddles me:" You would think if Von Miller had the ability to carry an additional 10-15 lbs he would already be carrying it.". Is that a joke? 90%+ of all LB's put on weight after entering the NFL. Remember when Ray Lewis was 220? Derrick Brooks was 220. They slid on draft day because of weight concerns. Millers 230+, don't worry about his weight. Hes good

Chan himself said that Miller can stop the run because he has excellent technique and body control and understands leverage. Said he can play LB in a 3-4 or a 4-3.

LMAO at the people who think 237 is too small but 245 would be fine. To a player who can play and bring it, that couple of lbs makes no difference.

Also LMAO at the arrogant posters in this thread who thinks they "know" a player because they watched some YouTube clips. ( yes you thoner)

Those guys are both several inches shorter than Von Miller, and play middle linebacker. There is really no validity to that comment. Von Miller needs to be able to shed blocks from massive offensive lineman as a pass rushing OLB. That is where the size comes into play

...or be able to out-quick lumbering 320lb OL trying to block him.

Now, to be clear, I am not necessarily advocating drafting Von Miller at 3. I also would prefer Da'Quan Bowers or Fairley

(based on what I've read so far), but I am saying that you should not write Miller off just because he "only" weighs 237.

If we were drafting at number 10 I would love to have Von Miller join the team. He is not top 3 talent though. Simple as that. Size is a huge factor entering the NFL, and Miller simply does not have it. It is not as simple as him weighing 237 lbs. It is the frame that he has. He is a naturally lanky guy. Many people are looking at the other OLBs around the league that weigh 255 lbs, and they say he has to gain 15-18 lbs. The difference is that many of these players are only 6'0-6'1. So with his body frame it is equivalent to him weighing 225 lbs or so. I stand by the fact that he is NOT an every down player in the NFL, and anywhere in the top 5 is no place for a situational defender. No matter how good they are.

Agreed. I could be wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion that if he weighed 241 people would be saying "the kid has adequate size, he's at 241 already so another 7-8lbs and he'll be fine..." It's a numbers/measurement game at this point of the year unfortunately. Clay Matthews weight wasn't the only reason he has translated into a star at the next level, his 10yd burst was his class's 2nd fastest after Percy Harvin.

After reading this thread, I am thankful that nobody hear is making our draft choices. It's like there's a new thread every week saying we should over draft and reach for this or that player because they had a good game or saw some highlight clips on YouTube. But wait, what's that you say? You watched the entire week of practices of the Senior Bowl and therefore know what you're saying? By all means, carry on then. :wallbash:

Ralph is a reactionary, so I highly doubt we take an undersized pass rusher at #3 so close after the Maybin pick. It's probably the same reason we took Maybin over Orakpo, with the recent history of ralph writing huge checks to flops from Texas like Mike Williams and Dockery. So I am prepared for the Bills passing on Miller and him becoming the next Freeney.

Lets face it, what a player does for another team really doesnt mean a whole lot. I'd venture to say that atleast half of our bust draft picks would have been good if they started their careers with decent coaches/teams. I mean look at the Raiders every single year. You can only have so many bad drafts year after year before you say to yourself "maybe its not the draft picks, maybe its the whole franchise from top to bottom". Once a guy's confidence is shot its really tough for them to recover, no matter how talented they are. Stevie Johnson's last several games after the Steeler disaster is a perfect example of that.

I actually did my self a favor and considered my light statement. Right away. Maybe i should have said i thought he played light. Too light.

He looked kind of pass rush only to me. I did watch some you tubes over at thoners place haha. nor really

He did get pushed around and was used to rush from what little i saw.

I think he is a great player but i am considering our assumed needs. I need to retract my opinions because i did not see enough of his play i think.

But the Chan Senior bowl factor will have alot to do with whether we have him on board i bet.
