See this is a misnomer about players looking back. When in man to man coverage, you aren't taught to look back for the ball. When you are beat you speed through the hip to catch up. When you turn your head, naturally your body slows. When you catch up, you are supposed to look for the hands and reach your hand through the arms or chop across them to try to dislodge the ball.
