Bills sign UFA DT Alan Branch to 1 year deal
Fan in Chicago replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ditto for Dansby though I am not sure where Jenkins fits in this D given that we have several CBs on the roster. Perhaps this indicates one of the CB (Aaron WIlliams ? Brooks ?) is being considered for a move to safety. In any case, I like the Alan Branch signing esp the 1 yr part. -

Bills officially sign QB Kevin Kolb

IMHO, we cannot underplay the importance that the OL was good last year due to (1) Gailey's O friendly offense (2) Levitre's presence (3) Fitz quick throws (whether or not they were accurate is not germane to low number of sacks) We lost Levitre and Rinehart. As it stand right now, I have no confidence that the protection will be equally stellar. So it remains to be seen if Kolb will be the beneficiary of better OL play. Also, we only have 2 WRs. -

Kelly, while I appreciate that we need to cover ourselves in the eventuality that a rookie wont be ready, rarely do NFL teams plan for two QBs flopping. I would assume a rookie and one semi-vet is all teams should carry with an emergency QB (Brad Smith) . Given the limitted resources, money is better spent elsewhere. Adding quantity only says that the FO itself is not very confident in their own evaluations. -

I really don't see much difference between Fitz, Kolb and Tjackson in terms of what they add to the team. Maybe accuracy differences but in the end I doubt any of them makes much difference to the W/L column. And here is my rub, which I expressed earlier when we were discussing Flynn also - I don't see why we are thrashing in all possible directions to seemingly fill our Qb hole. How does adding Kolb help the team long term ? This is against the general Nix philosophy of building for the long term. On the one hand, we keep hearing BPA for the draft but in FA we 'reach' for QBs. I am VERY curious to see the structure of the deal but if it is front-end loaded, it would be a huge mistake cos it was money due to which we let Levitre go. Money and future cap issues which have seemingly stopped us from going after our strong needs such as LB. But here we seem to have no problems throwing money at this second tier QB who may or may not be a measurable upgrade over TJackson. While I will wait to see information and curious about where the rest of the off-season takes us, at this point we seem to be flailing around in the personnel department. -
Is Kyle Williams going to undergo surgery?

Considering it is Achilles, we should have heard something since January when it was first reported as a possibility. Something was up with him though as he did not have the impact he did in the past. I doubt it was lack of heart as he is a lunch pail type player who puts in a lot of effort. Whatever was wrong, I hope he gets it fixed as we need him. Carrington is also doing well so our interior DL has alot of potential. Now get Dareus to shed some weight and come back from his sophomore slump. -
I don't see what provoked Whitner's tweet in the first place. What have the fans said recently that has not already been said about him since he left ? If he is bringing up Buffalo out of context, it is he who hasn't gotten over the fact that the Bills didn't want him too badly.

Apology accepted. Maybe we did not acquire many of the QBs with the intent of them starting but Holcomb, Fitz did end up starting cos we just had some poor choices on the roster to pick from. We really need to end this cycle of underwhelming and below-average QBing. (duh) Your last sentence is the crux of my problem with a trade scenario. If (big IF) Flynn is not significantly better than TJackson, why spend a draft pick on acquiring him ? Also, our FO is spending a lot of time evaluating the draft class. Spending time with Flynn and having yet another backup-grade QB on the roster will distract the coaches going forward. Now, if after looking at Geno Smith etc, our FO is not convinced they are the long term answer then perhaps it may be worth it to see if there is even a marginal improvement at QB for the short term. But, that is a lot of if's.

My argument being bogus is your opinion ofcourse. We have gone down this re-tread path a lot in the past decade and here we are with no consistency at the most important position. We all remember how happy we were (including me) when we cut Edwards and went with Fitz. Edwards had become very skittish and telegraphed plays. Fitz at least gave us an aggressive style. A couple of years later, we soured on Fitz after his frustrating inaccuracy and penchant for game killing interceptions. I think we need to go a different route and truly go for a QB with long term potential.I admit there is limited game film on Flynn but I am deferring to the talent evaluators at two teams to tell me that he is only a good enough as a backup - albeit (as you say) to two potentially great QBs. But we need to find that great QB and not settle for a second class, hand-me-down option who is likely to continue hampering the Bills success. (BTW, I am surprised at your uncharacteristically rude post)

Thanx. Good stuff. Looks like the guy wants to come and play for the Bills. Always a positive so I will give him a thumbs up if he clears our physicals. Would still offer only a 1 year contract or an incentive laden one that covers the Bills on the down side. -
I did. In my very first response - "Trade for a QB who lost his job to a 3rd round rookie ? No thanks." We can argue semantics. But Green Bay did not retain him. And now Seattle is most definitely getting rid of him. I have not read if they tried to re-structure his contract or just simply wanting to see if they can get a draft pick out of him. Are you arguing against drafting a QB at all ? Flynn's games have been underwhelming. He has already been evaluated by two teams and rated as nothing more than a backup. OTOH, Geno Smith and Barkley are being given high grades by scouts and talent evaluators. Hence, picking a highly rated prospect would not be a waste of time. I am done with this argument.
-
Let us try this one more time. You re-worded my post to say "Trade for a QB who lost his job to a Pro Bowl QB?". First of all, those were NOT my words. Secondly, you are implying that a pro-bowl QB came in and took away Flynn's job. Peter Caroll evaluated the rookie Wilson to be a better QB than Flynn and made him a starter. Wilson had perhaps one of the best low-round rookie seasons ever which points to the correctness of Caroll's decision. Now, Green Bay picked him in the 7th round and then did not retain him. He went to Seattle, his second team, which is now trying to get rid of him. And we already had Fitz we were unhappy with and TJackson - both of who may not be too different from Flynn in terms of production. Why would we give up a draft pick and waste our time with Flynn ?
-
At the time the switch was made, Wilson was a rookie and not a pro-bowler. Flynn is being jettisoned by his second team now. DOesn't that tell us all something about his prospects ? Do we need yet another stop-gap performer who may or may not be better than Fitz. And, please make your point without changing the wording in my post.

I thought it was rather uncharacteristic for Beerball to miss it so I agree and hence the question. The real issue here is that the car came with three. You know, if you have three women, you have none.

Not one of the guys with pitchforks but here is my explanation - there has been a dearth of information regarding discussions, workouts etc with free agents. Such activity may very well be on-going and the Bills are quiet because of Buddy-gate and I am fine if that is the case. All the news we have received is about private workouts with Geno Smith, EJ Manuel etc. But then the only piece of news re: FA that comes out is regarding a TE who suffered a big injury just a few months back. If the FO is going to control and manage what news gets out, can they not do so with a more exciting FA ? Leads me to believe they either made a poor choice of who they want the fans to find out about or that there are no other FA discussions happening. Hence the frustration IMHO. -
Stevie wants DHB (Update - goes to Colts)
Fan in Chicago replied to NoSaint's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Indeed. A receiving corps that looks like SJ, DHB, TJ, DNelson, FDavis, Chandler will make life for our QB (rookie or otherwise) a whole lot easier. Dibs had earlier posted our cap situation and I would be willing to sacrifice Brad Smith to help head off any impending cap issues in 2014. The above hinges on the return from injury of Davis and the extent of Nelson's injury as you stated. A lot of ifs but certainly not out of the realm of possibility -
Looking for name of psychological condition

I suggest looking up disorders and symptoms in this link. I have used this in the past mostly to understand some difficult personalities in my life. I am on my phone so cant do the research for you at the moment. Also, as you read through the symptoms, don't fall into the trap of self-diagnosis. Many perfectly normal people may have one or more of the listed' symptoms' but that doesn't mean they suffer from any disorder. I think the Mayo clinic guide has a good explanation of how o use DSM-V. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/personality-disorders/DS00562 -

Lost 8 Starters, Replaced 1
Fan in Chicago replied to Stussy109's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hang on. Are you questioning the basic premise of free agency ? Teams do not improve by getting highly coveted free agents ? They have been less active than a team with so many needs should have been. Frankly, last offseason brought in two big names in Williams and Anderson. In retrospect, Williams may have been a marketing ploy for a highly disgruntled fan base. Sure it worked, and we were happy but net result was that it bought the FO another year of peace with the fans. This year we will be forced to draft a QB high whether or not the FO believes that he is the long term answer. That will buy them another year. IMHO, we should have traded for Alex Smith, kept Levitre and gone after LBs and WRs in FA/draft. Then gone after the long term QB in next year's draft We needed to go after more impact players wherever we could find them. Other teams filled holes, yet we preached patience and keep selling hope as if it is a strategy
