R.I.P Jim Johnson Age 68 has lost his battle to cancer and leaves behind a great coaching career. R.I.P To one of footballs greatest defensive minds. A huge loss for the NFL, and for the mans family. As someone who always enjoyed watching the eagles virtualy no name defense play an agressive style of defense, I will miss the style he brought to the game. It will live on through coaches like Spags, and Harbaugh, and the current Eagles staff. R.I.P You will be missed

Probably not anytime soon no. We're too weak in the trenches on defense, and far too green on offense, to give the patriots any serious challenge. They simply own us, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

100% agree. The Bills have little to no depth and as it stands now only 1 legit starter. Kyle Williams is forced to start via default. He's not a bad player, but a guy who's much better off as part of a rotation than a guy we should have to rely on. After Kyle Williams it gets really ugly. I really hope McCargo amps up his game. The entire dline is still a huge question mark from dt's-dends. The sooner someone outside of Stroud/Williams steps up and the sooner someone replaces Chris Kelsay as a starter the better we'll be looking defensively.

I half agree. I really liked Michael Johnson's potential. If he can put on some weight to go with his height he'll be an impact player. I disagree with "Excellent coach Marvin Lewis" but nitpicking aside I think Michael Johnson and Keith Rivers who they drafted last year will be cornerstones for that defense for years to come.

I dont wanna speak for QB Bills but what I think he meant is. The Bills are such losers when it comes to NE, and have gotten our ass kicked so much by them, that fans don't care about the bills beating them. That they would rather someone else do it for the bills. The original posted hinted that it's good to have other teams talking about doing, exactly what the bills should be doing. I'm not so much saying just talking trash but sh-- isn't it time the Bills attempt to beat NE, instead of looking like dead dogs against them? Fact is The Buffalo Bills are scared of the New England Patriots. This team is the Pats B word. Their play on the field, and the tone of certain posts reflect that, by hoping some other team does what the bills should want to do.

Richard Seymour is a swing player, and they consistently moved him around over his career. In a base 3-4 yes he's a dend. He started his career out as a 4-3 dt. They lose Wilfork, go back to playing a 4-3 like they have in past years, without much problem along their dline. They're tailor made for either system. As far as Brace goes of course he's "unproven" but it's forward thinking to draft a guy who can potentially play the same position 3-4 nt as someone they may lose.

How we glance over the major difference. The Patriots have guys they can move in and out. While Wilfork is a tremendous nt, and don't even lie bills fans would be happier than pigs in sh-- to have someone the caliber of Wilfork next to stroud. The patriots are in a position where they can let him go. They have Seymour Ty Warren, Wright, Jarvis Green and they just drafted Boston tackle DT Ron Brace. It's not like they'd be getting rid of Pat Williams and replacing him with Ron Edwards

Make no mistake about it Philly deserves to be up there. I've been to Ralph Wilson and the Vet, as far as game atmosphere goes rooting for your team not much seperates the two fan bases. I have no qualms with the philly selection. Philly sports fans may be !@#$s, but they live and die with their teams the same way Buffalo sports fans do.

One less real defensive football player in the league. I may not like the team he ended his career with, but he was a great player, who had a knack for being in the right spot at the right time. Very few of the ilk of Harrison are left, and in a sport that now prides itself on moving further and further away from allowing defensive players to play defense, he'll be missed.

Ray Rice will be a good nfl rb, guys a terror to tackle, and humble. Not much of a receiver although Rutgers did use him more in that role during his last year there. Not a speed demon, but good vision and patience. I hope he does get the nod to start for the Ravens.

My ideal defense is simplistic in nature. 2 big run stopping defensive tackles in the vain of A Ted Washington/Pat Williams type combo. Which is part of the reason why Im jumping on the early bandwagon for the Terrence Cody 2 Buffalo campaign for 2010. Stock up on multiple pass rushing ends kind of like the giants do. I wanna come at you in waves, and if it means I'm sacrificing talent in the back half of the defense so f'n what. When you got players the caliber of Tuck/Osi/Kiwanuka/Sintim wtf cares who's playing corner. Lbs- I want my lb's to have sideline to sideline range with coverage ability. Size isn't all that important, but if you aren't covering you are useless in my defense. Too many teams run the short area passes over the middle, te's are a staple of any good offense, and there are plenty of good receiving backs in the league. Coverage ability for lb's is a must. Know how to form tackle. You can teach a backer pass rush moves. Good coverage ability is a gift, seldom learned. I want my corners with good size and physical. I'll sacrifice some speed for the ability to jam up at the los. Too much of football is won/lost in short down and distance. Fast corners are great. 5'11-6'1 200-210lb corners who can man up in the redzone and stop the quick slants and fades are a godsend. My nickle corners I want a quicker faster player to play up in the slot. My safeties I want interchangeable. In the box ss are a thing of the past. Gotta be the total package. Good up in run support, with the speed to cover deep. Have the knack for blitzing, and the hands to pick off passes. As far as my philosophy I'd probably lean towards a Jim Johnson agressive style defense. I'm coming after your offense with pressure as often as possible. Yeah I may give up some plays, but with my 2 stout dt's playing the run, and the lb's with good coverage ability I'm letting my dend talent play up to their strengths. I'm not gonna throw many fancy looks. You'll know I'm coming, and it's up to your offense to stop it, and my defense to make a play. Again I would majorly go very talent heavy along the dline, using multiple high end picks/free agent pickups to stockpile talent, while sacrificing areas like corners/safeties/lb's

He also had 13 picks and 9 fumbles and was sacked every 8 pass attempts. Oh and the falcons finished 7-9. Vick finished his last 2 seasons going 15-17. I guess if you want to continue mediocrity cause the inability to have any potential as a quarterback impresses you, than vick is your guy. Considering he hasnt played since 2006, What about vick impresses you? His gaudy sub 55% completion pct. That he's never thrown for 3000 yards? That he creates more negative plays than positive plays? He's probably maxed out on his potential several years ago. I'd sooner want to see Drew Bledsoe back, than ever bring in Vick, and that has more to do with what I think of him as a quarterback, than as a human being. For as non nimble as Bledsoe was even he managed to only be sacked once every 14 pass attempts for his career.

The Bolded part is quite possibly the biggest misconception about Vick. Yes the guy is fast, and can make plays getting out of bad situations, or just to gain serious rushing yards. He's great if you want, a college system offense. He is however, and never has been "elusive against pressure". Peyton is elusive against pressure. Vick is just a rushing quarterback. A little break down of sacks per pass attempt of more noteable qb's Peyton Manning- Sacked once every 29 pass attempts Tom Brady- Sacked every 18 pass attempts Drew Brees- Sacked every 26 pass attempts Phillip Rivers- Sacked every 18 pass attempts Ben Roethlisberger- Sacked every 10 pass attempts Jay Cutler- Sacked every 23 pass attempts Tony Romo- Sacked every 20 pass attempts Eli Manning - Sacked every 19 pass attempts Trent Edwards- Once every 18 pass attempts Michael Vick- Sacked every 9 pass attempts. Also has more turnover causing plays ints/fumbles than tds pass/rush Passing/rush tds- 92 total- 71 passing 21 rushing ints/fumbles- 107 total- 52 picks 55 fumbles 27 lost fumbles.

I'm happy the bills don't really address their defensive front 7 in favor of defensive backs. Seems like a winning football strategy to have. My post was not a means to wine, but rather point out the obvious. The pats just happened to be the team this tread is about. I could've done the same if talking about the giants, or countless other bowl/playoff caliber teams who can come at you in waves of front 7 players. The Bills can come at you in waves on secondary players. One strategy is time tested and proven. The other is a losing strategy.

Personally I was kinda hoping when the Jason Peters trade rumors to Philly first started popping up that we could've persued the option of trading Peters for Trent Cole, instead of multiple draft picks. It would've solved needs for both teams. We replace a good lt, with a legit rush end, and still would've had the 11th pick to use. If that wasn't feasible I would've gone with option B of drafting multiple dend players. Personally I was kind of hoping for Jarron Gilbert before chicago picked him up in the 4th. The strategy of drafting multiple dline players generally pans out well for teams like the giants and chicago, who have a glutton of dends. There were rumors that Osi Umenyoria was available for trade, although I think that was just an attempt to try to get Braylon Edwards or Boldin. Everette Brown might've been worth the pick in the 2nd. It still may have taken a few years but we would be in better position to make the transition away from our older ineffective dends. The overall free agent landscape for pass rushers was almost non existant, and it usually is, as teams won't let good dends get away. We missed out on Cam Wake to the dolphins, who knows if we persued Jason Taylor. Someone like Bertrand Berry while older, for a short term stop gap is still a better option than Kelsay or Denney. Again I'm glad they drafted Maybin and recognized the need. It just feels like throwing all the eggs in one basket. A lot of people may not be willing to accept that Maybin probably wont do much of anything this year, and we'll be in the exact same situation defensively that we've been in for several years. It's not worth it to even talk about the lack of dt depth or quality lb's. It's dissapointing to see teams like ne, philly, giants, chicago who can come at you in waves with their front 7 could even have an injury or 2 and not miss a beat. Than you have the Bills who would be terrible if god forbid Marcus Stroud were to miss time. All for the braintrusts desire for defensive backs.
