Bill Polian's Grades for 2015 FA's
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to BuffaloHokie13's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think if they're a broadcaster first, than yeah, you're absolutely right. If they were a wildly successful personnel man and talent evaluator, as Polian was, for 30 years, than yeah, I would say his opinion is worth considering as valuable. He bends over in the morning to tie his shoe, and accidentally farts out more football knowledge than you or I will ever know. -
RB David Johnson, Northern Iowa
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He seems to be slow at finding a hole and going north-south. Doesn't appear to be a very strong route-runner, but offers the most there. Sounds like the opposite type of back that we need, as we will be running much, where a team like New Orleans, who throw the ball much more, would utilize his "hyper-3rd down back" skill set. -

Hmm, that's disappointing, I thought he looks great, but a lot of times someone that big does look great with an NFL body running against kids 2 years out of high school. I am still interested in him, in the hopes that Mayock is wrong, as he sometimes is, but I'm wrong far more often than I am, so that's disappointing. -

I like Tevin Coleman, I think he possibly has the best upside of the backs I've seen this year. Has the big body, seems to have good-enough speed to be effective at the NFL level, and was productive at Indiana University, where the defense knew they were going to run him. I have seen 5 or so guys now (Coleman, Johnson, Ajayi, Abdullah, and one other), and though Abdullah seems like the most SURE THING to be a productive pro, Coleman seems like, if he goes to a team with a strong OL and TEs who can block, he will be a STAR, and could have a couple 1400 yard seasons. He looks like a long-striding Frank Gore (which may or may not be a good thing). Seems to take a couple strides to hit his top gear (but maybe it's just him letting his blocks develop... Do I need to really add a disclaimer that I'm not a professional scout?), but once he hits his hole and gets through the LOS, he is big enough with enough speed to be a problem for the defense to bring down. Has good enough contact balance to fall forwardor drag tacklers yards after contact, which is huge in the NFL. He's not Blount, and I'm not saying he'll be an elite back like these guys, but his body and rough skill LOOK like Murray from Dallas or LT (though one of LT's major skills were catching out of backfield, and I couldn't e v a l that from the limited footage I saw). In college, they seemed to run a lot of sweeps and pitches, so I don't know if that was because he had a problem going immediately north-south, or if they had the athleticism instead of size on the OL so that's just how they utilized it, by getting out in space. With us probably bringing in a good blocking FB, and surely to greatly improve out G situation, I think he would do very well here. I would love to grab him in Rd. 2, and give him the ball 15+ times per game, even with Fred and Bryce on the team. I think we will be running it 35x per game, so that would still leave 20 carries for Fred, Bryce, and Boobie to figure out (though I feel us carrying Coleman, new FB, Fred, Bryce, Boobie might be too many backs, and one could be on the bubble at the end of TC). Again, I haven't watched him game-in, game-out, but I like what I've seen. I didn't have a chance to evaluate his catching ability, and obviously nobody sees pass-pro on a highlight reel, but he's big enough to be strong at it, if he makes the effort to learn, how Fred was not good at it but he put in the work, and became VERY good. PS, sorry guys, I know I just pretty much changed the subject without even acknowledging the conversation was about Johnson, but I just had a post double this size written up, then I switched pages quick to get a link to post, and lost THE WHOLE THING, so I just recreated the Coleman part of it, which is where I leaned towards sayingwasmy favorite, after e v a l'ing the other guys. My take on Johnson is that his upper body doesn't seem to match his lower body, looking like Anthony Wright on the top, and legs look like Colton Schmitt. I know it's a smaller school so once he gets with a real NFL training staff, he could really improve and be where he should be by his second training camp, but as far as him contributing THIS YEAR, I'm not as interested in him as the rest of you seem to be. Doesn't seem to have next-level contact balance, so if ever meeting an NFL level player in the backfield, which is EVERYONE in the NFL, he will likely go down for a loss, instead of someone like Fred, who could scoot and wiggle and turn a -3 run into a 0 or +1 run. And as far as Ajayi, he looks like he should be faster at that smaller size, but again doesn't seem like he has elite speed, seems to have inadequate contact-balance, and might be a duplicate of Bryce Brown. If either one of these guys were still on the board by our 2nd pick in Rd. 5, we would have a tough time not picking them as a BPA pick, if we didn't go RB with our 1st 2 picks, but it is impossible they're not LONG GONE by then. -
Robust. Lockstep. Obviously. Analyze that.

Whaley: Bills have exchanged offers with Hughes
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Although I don't dispute that this is a feasible way to build a winning team here, with the players that we either have or have access to acquiring, let's not confuse this... Those teams were built/ won 30, 15, and 13 years ago. Let's not confuse that the most RELIABLE way to get to the Super Bowl lies with getting a top 6-8 QB, and adding a complimentary defense and running game, not getting a top defense, and adding a complimentary running game and QB. Again, don't get me wrong, I like watching us splatter QBs, and this method COULD work if we have a SUPERB defense, a QB who can complete passes at a high rate, to sustain drives, and an offensive line and running backs who can convert 3rd downs... But the jury remains out as to whether we have that QB on our team, or have access to him, and to whether we can build that line. -
So Goodwin was injured for part of the season, and KILLED on a defenseless reciever hit going over the middle, but why exactly were two, as I thought at the beginning of the year, relatively talented receivers, completely unproductive this year? If you had said the tow of them would combine for 9 catches for 184 yards, I would have called that way off base for even a worst case scenario, barring preseason IR designations. So I would very much want to know why the coaching staff preferred to not use these talented players, and in making those choices accepted the pretty anemic weekly output that regressed us to the Losman/ pre-Freddy offensive days.

Tom Hanks does impression of Rex and Belichik
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And Marrone would be the alcoholic, not-coming-home every night, verbally abusive step dad who leaves your mother for a 370 lb balding female trucker, with acne. No hard feelings, Doug. -
Watkins and "Uhm" had solid years, and the team got unusual value from a 7th round round pick in Henderson, but the fact that they hardly even got a snap from their 2nd and 4th rounders hurts. Past the 4th round, it's a relative crapshoot, so you can't give Cyril or Johnson too many problems for not producing... Though I remain optimistic that the flashes that I saw in the preseason of Johnson mean he could produce something this year, even earning a little playing time if the team loses Hughes and/or Spikes.

Buffaloed in Pa mock draft
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, the 4th that we spent on the RB position was taken from this draft, which is the reason we have no 4th rounder this year (after acquiring a 4th in the Stevie trade, trading our original 4th to Cleveland in the Watkins trade, and the Stevie 4th for Bryce. -
Pegula ranked as 4th wealthiest NFL owner
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The team that Ralph solely owned was annually valued at between $900 and $950 million for the last decade, by Forbes, so assuming he had an extra $50-$100 million laying around, he was a billionare, not a 100-million-are. -
Pegula ranked as 4th wealthiest NFL owner
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The land was probably already valued at approximately what it sold for, so that wouldn't have changed whether it was sold, or not. Owning an area of land that's worth $1.75 billion, or selling it and having $1.75 billion in hand is the same thing, as far as what your net worth is. -
I'm not sure about that, I'm PRETTY sure that if it is for an interview as a HC, the team the coach is under contract with cannot deny this interview. If it is for a lateral move (like Schwartz was inquired about with the Redskins) or just a promotion for position coach to coordinator (like how Van Pelt is QbC in GB but was denied interview with 3 or 4 teams this offseason to be OC), that is something that would need permission.

NFL Live Bills over cap?
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to Gasjuggler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Geez I didn't realize it was QUITE so much money that we had to work with... I'm all for cutting Urbik, Williams and Rivers and saving that approx 7 million ONLY IF it means we go after Iupati or Carpenter. I wasn't interested in getting one of those 2 guys if we had the approx 20-22 million that I was anticipating. Now if we're looking at a possible $35 million of space, I could see giving 6-7 million for a top guard, retaining Hughes for around $10 million, and Revis for what... $13 million? If we have to, give that Hughes money to J. Thomas, if they aren't interested in drafting a TE in the 2nd or 3rd round. Either direction I could get behind. -
Compensatory picks 2015
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So basically the signing of Chris Johnson and Brandon Spikes guarantees that we won't get anything for losing Jairus Byrd, whose $9 million per year would have been the 3rd best company pick, a 3rd rounder, the 35th pick in round 3. Despite losing Moats, Carrington, and Leonard. Oh good. -
These are my sentiments exactly, could be a MAJOR advantage to get that damn Thursday night game out of the way before we had a Sunday game 4 days before it, but the most important part is: The Pattys in September are at their most vulnerable. It seems like every year they start 2-2, or 3-2, and everyone says they're done, it's over for them, but then they go on that damn 9-1 run and get homefield throughout AGAIN. Well, I want us to play the Pats when they're the most vulnerable, so we can go up 1-0 against AFCE, and perhaps more importantly, 1-0 against the Pattys in a season we SHOULD be within 2 games of them at the end of December. A couple other breaks, and God willing Brady starts his decline, we would hold an important tie breaker against them when we're ready to 86 them out of the playoffs around Christmas.

Wade Phillips hired as DC in Denver
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
RETURNS to Denver, it should be stated... I'm pretty sure he was Broncos DC before he came to Buffalo to DC (obviously before Marv retired, and Son-of-Bum became HC). -
I think they should stop having articles about how they're going to start making the most of EJ's abilities, and start talking about how they're finally going to utilize Lee's God given natural abilities... Like how they're going to make him the new hot dog vendor. I see him making at least a half dozen pro bowls in that role.

FA QB option: Matt Moore
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Among all the available options, I have a hard time finding someone who is better, though... We don't have probowlers to pick through, either by FA, trade, or pick #50 in the draft. -
Coaches Who May Be Joining Rex Ryan's Staff ???
BuffalothruMyVeins replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great, I can't wait until he drafts Trent Edwards the 16th. -
Franchise Hughes- trade him. Pick #49 in 2015 2016 first rounder (hesitated here, I don't want to give up another 1st rounder for Ryan, but I don't think Atl. can sell to their fans getting rid of Ryan and not even getting a 1st rounder, reguardless of what other pieces they acquire.) EJ Manuel For- Matt Ryan 2015 4th round pick. I feel like I could live with that, and it could be a fair price. Maybe toss in a Goodwin if there's a mid-to-lower tier roster guy they happen to be attracted to.
