Again, the issue is how you measure a successful running game. A 100 yard rusher tells you almost nothing - how many carries did it take? What about teams with over 100 yards rushing in a game using multiple runners? What percentage of the runs resulted in a first down or were otherwise better than average against that opponent in that down and distance? You need to measure the efficacy and efficiency of the running game - pointing to a single 100 yard rusher as correlating with winning percentages is a nearly useless stat.

This is why a metric like DVOA is more useful than yardage - it’s impossible to tell what’s driving that data without understanding the context (down, distance, strength of opponent and game situation). Also those are all pretty good winning correlations.

That is precisely the issue. You use a 3rd on a RB like Motor and then two more Day 2 picks on the same position - now what? Motor is a good player but you can’t justify paying him (unless he takes a significant hometown discount) with other, more important positions to re-sign and two other young guys waiting in the wings at RB. Plus he’s not featured in the offense (nor should he be) and he’s a part-time player. So why use a 3rd just for four years of service at a non-premium position? Take an EDGE, tackle, WR, CB there and if you hit, you’ve got a cost-controlled every-down premium asset whom you won’t hesitate to re-sign to a second contract.

This. It’s the equivalent of hitting on 18 against a five and pulling a 3 in blackjack and declaring that it’s a perfectly fine strategy. False. You have to extrapolate out the act over a period of time - generally speaking, using high picks on low-value positions for which you won’t want to pay a second contract is not a good long-term team-building strategy. The only responses I’m hearing are (i) other teams do it (so what?), (ii) Beane knows better than you (the lamest message board response imaginable), and (iii) but Motor has been a nice player (again, fans will be mad if they pay him and letting him walk is a low ROI, too).

If he ends up sitting it will be because of his pass pro issues.

I actually think the real pressure will come NEXT season if the Bills don’t make it to the SB this year and fans start to realize the true lost opportunity of “13 seconds” - hopefully we never get there.

Again - the Rams have to be seething about being home dogs after winning the SB, and they happen to have the most fiery player in the whole league leading the charge and firing up the locker room. Bills on the road with a new coach calling the offense - I think the Bills will have a magical season but I would not touch this one.

Many of us were disappointed with the positional value AT THE TIME and were even more disappointed when Beane doubled down the following year. It is easy to say in retrospect, in a vacuum, well Moss and Singletary are at least competent players while plenty of WRs and DEs picked after them busted out - but if you extrapolate it out over time as a STRATEGY, you will go broke with that type of asset allocation approach. You cannot use high picks on easily-replaceable assets, especially when the Bills aren’t even trying to focus their offense around an elite running back/game (nor should they). Even when those picks “hit,” you’re stuck deciding whether to pay them big $$ on a second contract, where much cheaper replacements can be found in FA or the 6th round. Folks are gonna lose their minds next offseason if they decide to pay Singletary and have to release or pass on more valuable veterans as a result - and that’s precisely the issue. Was four years of Motor worth the high draft investment?

It really isn’t and it’s bizarre - for what they seem to want to do, use the running game to keep the defense honest, make the offense more physical, and protect the QB while offering him a short passing outlet - you can find that kind of personnel deep in the draft or cheap in free agency. Did they really need to use a Day 2 pick on a player like Zack Moss?! If your much-hyped scouting department can’t find you that same skillset in the $.99 CD bin (now I’m really aging myself), it’s time to find better scouts.

He basically single-handedly lost us the Jags game last year. Not an exaggeration, go back and look at the grades. He gave up particularly timely pressures when the Bills needed, and were on the verge of, big plays. And losing that game essentially cost us home field against the Chiefs. Wanna go back further? Anyone remember his critical penalty against the Texans in the playoffs? That play, too, had a major impact on that season. Drafting Ford was a mistake but they continued to mis-evaluate him year after year and it continued to bite them in the arse. They should’ve drafted or signed a better linemen each of the last two offseasons and he shouldn’t have been on the roster and playing in critical games. They compounded their original error with him; the entire process was flawed. And now it’s come out that he was a dog - even if they didn’t properly evaluate his character leading up to the draft, they certainly knew what he was heading into 2021. And lol at his “reps” telling Beane he should be starting. Over whom? I can only imagine the call Beane got from his agent after the Denver game (where he committed one bad penalty and should’ve been flagged for another). Beane wouldn’t have forgotten the Jaguars debacle; I give him credit for not cutting Ford on the spot after his agents reached out and managing instead to recoup some value. But make no mistake, the Butterfly Effect of Cody Ford cost this team serious consequences.
