  1. Older, large cities tend to have a goodly percentage of folks that rely on this or that government program. They vote into office, the politicians who will extract more money and services for them. So property, sales, wage taxes go up. So others will leave the cities, and also the counties they are in. My property tax rate would easily be cut in half if I moved out of Hamilton County OH. When I lived in Western Pennsylvania, a move into Pittsburgh (rental or purchase) would have raised my municipal wage tax from 1% to 4%. I'm not prepared to argue about the ethics or morality of any of this - it's just the way it is.
  2. That remains to be seen. Bills were near or at the bottom on number of pass attempts, and I guess that many of the pass plays they executed were not the kind that needed a lot of longish engagement by the OL. I know many want to anoint Peters as the best LT ever, but fact is, he is a rising star in a stilted pass game. Which perhaps is a reason why the Bills' management isn't going great guns to crown him as King of the LTs, and pay such.
  3. Jerseys, trinkets, away gate, tv coverage, Toronto $$$, promotions, etc. Barnum Unchained!
  4. Raise ticket prices.
  5. Would that be the BF Hedge fund?
  6. Very nice! My collection consists of two..yes...two silk-screened 8 oz. tumblers, compliments of the Mobil Oil Co. from the gas war days.
  7. I'm well-situated. The Meijer's I do most grocery shopping at is, is about 3 miles away. There's a Kroger's and Wal-Mart on that road, also. Yes on the 10 for $10 promotions - people should educate themselves! But I also clip coupons for items I don't buy, and distribute them throughout the store for the next guy. However, I won't put one out that's XXX off two, unless the necessity to purchase 2 is in clear, bold print. I don't want some soul to make a purchase they otherwise may not. A poster noted the percentage of meals taken out of the home these days. It's pricey. On a rainy July 4th, wife 'n me went to breakfast and paid 17 bucks w/ tip. On July 5th, We shared a grilled 10 oz. ribeye bought on sale, along with roasted new potatoes, corn on the cob, and peaches with canned whipped cream for dessert. Eleven bucks for the both of us. I also noted a rise in restaurant prices after the OH voters upped the minimum wage (along with its' cost-of-living rise!). The increased cost got passed along to the customer - and have learned that the response to higher wages with some has been to cut staff. That's the way it goes...

  10. Such as your lobotomy? Thanks for the straight line!
  11. Absolutely so. I generally shop at Meijers'. Their in-store coupons and specials, as well as the newspaper coupons add up. My shopping there for the month of June was $312.76 - 63.68 in coupons and specials = $249.08 net. A little over 20% off. There are some items that I purchase at Wal-Mart because of better prices. I seldom buy from Kroegers's or Marsh's - they have those annoying (to me) "card" programs, so overall, their prices are higher. But they provide competion, which helps. There is also a nearby store called "Jungle Jims - a unique place. It's a tour bus destination. http://www.junglejims.com/index.asp Tip: If a Sunday papers' coupon inserts have some that are particularly valuable to you, buy an extra paper or two. Tip: "Buy one, get one free" does not mean half-price for just one.

  14. I wonder if the rubbers they have handed out to Olympic athletes for the past several years pick up on the uniforms' motif?

  16. Whenever I have the rare occasion to talk with utilities, credit outfits, and the like, I get that message "...this may be recorded for quality assurance reasons". I announce that I, too, am recording the conversation and if there is objection to that and objection is not stated, I proceed.
  17. There was one about 4 miles north of me. It was by an interstate exchange, and has been shuttered for over a year. Not that it ever evinced a packed house. Also a chain named "Roadhouse Cafe" in the same vicinity. My wife and me would patronize them occasionally, but it became obvious that they were marching on the road to being a failing business. They proceeded to offer iffy food, chintzy portions, delayed service, new help with all the charm of a neglected, stinking grease trap. I was amazed that this "Fuddruckers" outfit chose that name. Everybody knows the implication, and they must have been very thick-headed in not realizing that their cutsy name would cut them off from part of the market. "Daddy! Daddy, can we go out to eat! Sure kids - let's go to Fuddruckers!" "Daddy, Daddy! - what does Fuddruckers mean?". Duh...
