A question on penalties/challenges
stuckincincy replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A player who was legitimately on the field prior to a snap (a kicker kicking the ball is a snap) who is out of bounds is considered to be as out of bounds as the guy with a camera filming or any player on the bench. If the Jet that made the nifty play went out of bounds, came back in, then went out again...dead ball at the spot he touched it. I didn't see the game. Usually, when this happens, there is no member of the kicking team in the vicinity. If there is, it's a lesson learned about chasing after and covering a ball on the field, wherever it may lie. It's a rare happenstance. I've only seen it a handful of times through the years. I can't see changing rules for such an unusual thing. I prefer to credit the player who when the situation presented itself, did the deed. -

A question on penalties/challenges
stuckincincy replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1) Too many men on the field is a pre-snap infraction. Like delay of game, offsides, encroachment, et al before the clock starts. The only other assessable penalties before the snap is the various flavors of unsportsmanlike conduct AFAIK. 2) An out-of-bounds infraction does not start the clock on a KO. 3) See#1 above. There are penalties assessable when the clock runs, there are penalties assessable when it is not running. This whining about the OOB play that Jet player made, the stuff about NYJ taking a penalty, a Bills challenge - is getting tiring. In one of the threads, I asked - without reply yet - were the Bills really dumb enough to fake a punt from their own 24? If so, they are lucky that their challenge was upheld and they had the opportunity to punt the ball away instead of having NYJ take possession on the 27. Self-inflicted bullet, but deftly dodged... I suspect there wouldn't be a single peep, if a BUF player was nifty enough to do what that Jet player did on the KO...likely praise for the heads-up play. Eh? -
MY NUTS: Jets defensive line dominated the game

Re-read my post. "I can't disagree" = "I agree". Right? -

I didn't see the game, but I can't disagree with your thread title. -

Moorman Run, Penalty, Challenge & In-Bounds Kickoff
stuckincincy replied to SouthernMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well...why not then change the pro game to the college feel-good "fair" rules?...one foot in is a reception, catch a ball hit the turf and that's it...every play subject to review...no "unfair" ticking of the clock...those asinine OT "shoot-offs"... -
Moorman Run, Penalty, Challenge & In-Bounds Kickoff
stuckincincy replied to SouthernMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The NFL has taken pains to make KO returns exciting, as you mention. So, it's not a dumb rule. Make it a special case, exempt it from the general set of out-of-bounds rules, and watch teams scheming to direct KOs to the sidelines, with coverage biased towards that direction. It's not a common thing, a kick close to the sideline and a player in position and with the presence of mind to make that play. The Jet made a smart move...what's wrong with that? I'd leave the rule as is and hope that a team stung by it learns. Perhaps uses it to their advantage in the future. -

Do a search on Bruce Babbitt, Clinton's Secretary of the Interior. Don't miss the Indian gaming deals... -

You might not like this link, but I encourage you to search further for yourself. http://www.apfn.org/apfn/lippo.htm The quid pro quo delivered by the the Clintion adm. locking up U.S. low-sulfur coal in exchange for the Lippo Group's campaign contributions comes back to haunt... Don't forget to pay your energy bills this Winter. You might want to by an inefficient space heater from the Chinese built by factories using "dirty" coal, if that helps. -
Is it still to early to call
stuckincincy replied to TheBlackMamba's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Having a Hot Pockets moment? Few teams, now or historically, have one, let alone three rookies, bust out of the gate. Most of those that do are running backs. Like Lynch and Petersen last season. The next season, folks have got the book on them. It's like the hot prospect pitcher that comes up from the minors. -

I am in favor of bringing back the bump 'n run. It would teach today's strutting WRs a lesson in humility. -
Moorman Run, Penalty, Challenge & In-Bounds Kickoff

He didn't take the ball out of bounds. He was out of bounds when he reached back and touched the ball. Bad luck for the kicking team - but everybody gets a copy of the rules. -
Moorman Run, Penalty, Challenge & In-Bounds Kickoff
stuckincincy replied to SouthernMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why would the Jets challenge the initial spot? That spot gave them the ball on the Bills' 27. Are you saying that the Jets (if it is possible) should have challenged the re-spot of the ball by the officials? The Bills had no choice but to challenge. If they win they get assessed 10 yards and get to punt. There's no controversy about the Jets accepting the penalty. A team has the right to the know where the ball is finally spotted before deciding to accept or decline a penalty. -
Moorman Run, Penalty, Challenge & In-Bounds Kickoff
stuckincincy replied to SouthernMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Based on the initial spot, the Bills turned the ball over on downs- so the Jets declined the penalty. Bills challenged the spot. Bills were given a 1st down, so then with the re-spot, the Jets accepted the penalty. If BUF didn't challenge (and win), it's Jets ball on the Bills' 27. They won the challenge...Jets took the 10 yards from the original LOS...Bills punted from their 14 to the Jets' 47. I didn't see the game. Was Moorman's run because of a botched punt? If it was a deliberate fake...not to swift a thing to do from one's own 24... -

DEN was a thundering 12 for 14 yards rushing. 306 yards passing from Cutler...and 3 ints. -
I just chalk it up to a smart play by a Jets' player. It's a risk when a KO nears the sidelines. I didn't see the game. Was it an errant kick, a bounce and roll, or what?
-
A player out of bounds is like anything else out of bounds. And a ball contacted by a player out of bounds on a KO is a spot at the 40.
-
It's a rule. You see it now and again...it's a heads-up play by a member of the receiving team.

Back-n-da-day, there was never a problem about left-over signs festering on the roadsides. Kids would retrieve the cardboard to draw on or make whatever, and the thin wooden stakes were readily converted to swords. On Saturday after Election Day, my block was like a medieval war camp.
