Yep. 100% on this. Listen to beat reporters describe the atmosphere at OBD before and after McBeane. Day and night. Whaley was a bad communicator, very disorganized and unprofessional. Yes OBD was a trainwreck but he was more of a problem that the solution
-
So you say his strength is the draft and then admit most of his picks didn’t turn out to be great players? That doesn’t really sound like a strength. I would say he was more successful at finding talent like the Lorenzo Alexander, Mike Gillislee, or Chris Hogan’s of the NFL than he was with drafting or free agency. As far as the 2017 draft, it doesn’t sound like Whaley had any input on the actual selections. He was on the way out. McDermott was probably making the decisions and it’s hard to fault him for not wanting to take a QB.

I just said the same thing… he’s not a GM though he could be a good pro personnel guy. OBD was extremely disorganized under his watch He was also very disorganized and had no clue how to build a roster. He is not suited to be GM Not really..:he was good at signing undervalued Free Agents Something tells me he doesn’t have that figured out
-
It’s not that he wasn’t methodical…he just had no idea how to build a team. Some of his picks were ok, but his strength was mostly pro personnel. I don’t think you want Whaley as GM
-
He really didn’t, until a few years ago. He was always down on the team on Schopp and Bulldog but to be fair, those teams were usually train wrecks. Once Josh turned the corner, he was more complimentary but it was clear his focus was more on the national scene and the Seattle beat. He never followed Buffalo too closely Yeah MS. She had some major physical and health needs. I think John was her primary care taker.

Wow… very sad. I know that Clayton has a wife with some very serious medical issues. I believe she is wheel chair bound. They never had kids - Makes me wonder who will take care of her

Star released. Pre-6/1 per Joe B, $1.5M cap savings.
JohnNord replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not so sure Star was a good signing. Yes the Bills had a massive void at DT. Outside of Kyle Williams there literally was no one else decent on the roster. Star was always inconsistent in Carolina though he flashed at times leaving you to believe he had that potential inside him to play at a high-level more consistently. That’s what Buffalo was banking on. The Bills had a lot of cap space in 2018 and chose to overpay Star to fill that void. The signing and contract size received mixed reviews. I don’t think Star has ever played good in Buffalo. He’s been average to below-average. But he was overpaid the whole time -

I think he was a JAG for most of his Bills career that was paid to be a quality DT Ok it’s happened twice my bad -

That was kind of a fluke. How many times has a player quit in the middle of the game like that? Regardless, Vontae was only on the team for a 1 year deal. They weren’t expecting him to play a huge role and solidify the defense. Star was average for mane half of him time in Buffalo. He was below average the other half. All in all his contract was an anchor they couldn’t get out of. -

Very true. Butlers deal was almost 1/3 if the length of Star’s though. It was relatively short term. That’s why I think Star’s was worse -

Both bad…Star was worse IMO given the size of his deal and how much they were counting on him. -

I agree but still think Star was worse. Tremendous opportunity cost. -

Yes…another bad signing but I would argue that Star was worse considering how much they relied on him. Plus Murphy was an injury risk. They didn’t completely rely on him and had contract outs unlike Star. Still Murphy and Star are close for worst contracts -

He wasn’t a free agent signing. He traded for Benjamin. -

Yes there were many who still regard him as a decent player and assumed that they would keep him because the cal savings wasn’t that big. -

Ok then who was Beane’s worst free signing? -

Good riddance…opportunity cost was huge with this bad deal -

Time for me to take my victory lap. I knew that Star was gone after Beane and McDermott stopped making excuses for him as they had in the past. This was by far the worst contract Beane has ever written as GM of the Bills and the latest line of mistakes of the Carolina Connection. The Bills had a gaping need at DT and Beane and McDermott put too much faith in their former player. At best, Star was an average DT, at his worst the return on his deal might have been the lowest at his position. I’m glad to see the Bills get out of a very bad deal and turn the page. -
They still have Derek Carr…
-
collectively no one. But he was so bad they decided to release him. Houston cut him as well. Not good signs.
-
I don’t know…Shaq Lawson of 2019 would be a great signing. He hasn’t played very well the past two seasons and has been released three times over the past year. He’ll be a reserve this season so maybe the scheme will help him out. Not a bad player to have as your 5th DE

OT: The sudden existential crisis in New England
JohnNord replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
NE was very aggressive in overlaying free agents last season and for the most part, their big contracts didn’t really deliver. It seems that this season, they are going in the opposite direction and trying to find “value contracts.” Doesn’t seem like it’s working so far -
Politics aside, Cole was an excellent Buffalo Bill. There’s not a doubt in mind that he help Josh grow as QB - especially in 2020 where he was his security blanket. He might be losing a step, but again zone defense he still knows where to get open. Because of his views he will probably never get the credit he deserves, which is too bad because he really boosted the offense
-
Where has he been mocked? Because I’m pretty sure they won’t use a 1st round pick on him. I have a hard time thinking they’ll spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on a RB.
