I just can’t believe that Glenn didn’t sign off on making Fields the “guy” this offseason and pay him way more than he should have gotten in the open market.

I don’t think that’s the case either. Kirk has a no trade clause, and basically no market via trade. They are almost certainly gonna cut bait with him next year. This may be their only chance to get ANYTHING for him. Oh I totally get not doing it if the Bengals think rolling with Browning is better. And I think there’s an argument that is in fact the case. i just think this is the EXACT scenario Atlanta (and Kirk) was hoping for. A medium term injury to a team with playoff expectations who may need a desperate QB trade. Kirk gets his money upfront and a chance to play for another payday, Atlanta gets a pick for a dude who is a guaranteed cut next offseason.

Cousins’ money is largely tied up in Atlanta. If Cousins was traded from Atlanta, today, Atlanta would eat $37M over this year and next in dead cap. Cousins would only be getting his 2025 base salary with Cincinnati. They could restructure Burrow’s $41M cap hit and fit Cousins tomorrow. I’m not saying that’s a great idea by any means, as that’s kicking Burrow’s can down the road more and that’s still a significant cost for a 12 game rental, but if the GM/HC are in danger of getting fired if they missed the playoffs again, why do they care?

I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot. With the Bengals losing Joe for 3 months, how much does it cost to pry Kirk Cousins out of Atlanta? A 3rd rounder? Kirk isn’t great but with 2 great weapons can he keep them in the mix for a WC spot? I think if it were a different team, you may say “oh well, let’s keep our assets and if we pick 12 next year, we will be better off a year from now” but the Bengals haven’t made the playoffs in 2 years. There may be more desperation there.

the Sam Darnold take is asinine. Burrow has a crappy OL. The OL in Buffalo is pretty good, even still, Josh gives us a ceiling that Burrow can’t. But that’s because Josh is a one man offense that basically no other QB in the NFL can replicate.

If any HC gets a QB, they will be fine. teams aren’t firing everybody every couple years because they can’t find a coach worth a damn. It’s because they can’t find a QB

Jake Browning has a winning record as a starter in Cincinnati. I think Burrow is really good, but he has the best weapons in the league. Browning will be okay for a bit
