Under Center (no screen-shots): but under Center plays, had VERY good success. I'm surprised Dorsey moved away from using these formations. Either with Gilliam at FB, or 12 personnel. 3rd & long (series 2): Josh hits Harris in the flat, watching live I thought he had a path to a 1st down if he stayed outside. Looks to be the case, but could be deceiving. I think he would have got it if he stayed there

I wanted to take a closer look at the 1st half & review the all-22 footage. Comments/screen-shots below, just on specific plays & players that stood out: Offense: Cook/running game: few BIG opportunities that went by the wayside Series 1: this is from our 40 on 1st down - looks like a big hole about to develop behind Morse/McGovern. Cook dances a bit too much/indecisive & it gets shut down. I think he cleans this up & it's a big gain next play - Torrence doesn't fire off the ball/DT blows him up OR this was set-up to be another HUGE gain on the ground (Dawkins pulling instead collides w/DT & Torrence, instead of kicking out the end) Series 2: at our 40, Cook gets the delay/outside draw. Kincaid totally whiffs on his block (CB-Reid, who makes the tackle); otherwise this might be a HOUSE call. For those calling out Cook for "not breaking tackles", he actually made a few guys miss in holes & would have had a huge 1st half on these last 2 plays alone

Do the Bills need a " Quarterback Whisperer?"

Your comment about questioning "focus and desire", is maybe half right. But nobody should question his desire, trying to leap defenders 5 yard short of a 1st down, etc (plenty of examples to point out). He's harder on himself than alot of ppl, and I think that's the big concern (mental aspect of trying not to let things spiral/compound). His focus, maybe. But that's pure speculation and alot of people trying to connect the dots to his "film study comment"/hot takes from prior media reports. More likely scenario, he had trouble seeing the field/reading the LBs and safeties. That to me is concerning, because we've seen this at the end of LY too. But we've also seen him rebound and "trust his eyes/progressions". He needs to get back to "confident" Josh, that strikes that proper balance of risk taking. Then he let the turnovers compound. For the gamblers out there, it's that feeling of a big loss and making the problem worse by betting more/more to win it back. Josh looked like he was "pressing". IMO, it's staying "discplined" and situational awareness. Time and place for heroics, but he's getting the team where it needs to be by playing an efficient brand of football. This has been a Josh problem every season, balance of hero-ball/staying ahead of the sticks. Last night was a combo of all his bad habits, rearing it's ugly head. They need better 1st down/2nd down outcomes, they were behind the sticks far too often last night. Move ahead to next week, I'm certain we will see a better Josh out there. -
A few topics/stats/info that have not been mentioned
MasterStrategist replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
1. Thought we didn't align properly on 2 big runs. Coach partially addressed during post game presser. I'd rather have Rapp than say Dodson 2. Seems right. McCovern had a lot of Quennin to deal with, thought he did fairly well. Josh didn't help himself out and playcalls seemed to be designed to get the ball out faster...thought he held it too long several times 3. Bernard looked fine to me, he's got to rely on his instincts/beat blockers with quickness to the hole. He did this as the game went on. I think he'll continue to be better, and didn't look like a liability 4. Impossible to say, depends if Josh plays the same. He turned it up a notch when needed, then lost that "urgency" immediately in OT. If I had to guess, it's a 8-10 point loss at most. I thought Rodgers was holding the ball too long and Zach Wilson, outside of his 1 INT actually played game manager OK. -
I thought the only thing Dorsey could have done differently, was put Josh under center more - work a bit more diverse running attack/playaction. We saw 1x hitting Gabe with this, resulted in a big gain. Dorsey must have been concerned with the DL getting there on 5 step drops (under center), so he went mostly gun and quicker route concepts. Honestly, alot of posters here wanted a quick passing game and that was our plan. Josh didn't execute, plain and simple. He wasn't seeing the field well at all, held the ball too long, and most costly were the turnovers. We had guys open, as others pointed out/shared screen shots. Josh didn't see them/anticipate it. 1. Dorsey did work a good amount of 12 personell, at least I thought. It just wasn't under center. 2. Cook usage/Rbs: hard to run outside against the Jets, with their DL alignment and fast LBs. So you'd say, let's run Harris/Murray more...perhaps, but that takes away another weapon and Jets also know those guys aren't running inside or near the pass catching threats. Cook got targeted on several passing plays, 1 of which should have been a TD if Josh leads him IMO, Josh bears the brunt of most blame. Dorsey, sure he's part of it, OL as well. I'm sure they'll evaluate what happened. But Josh ultimately turned it over 4 times, mostly on poor decision making. Not sure I'd correlate that to Dorsey, but perhaps there's something to be said of getting him more support/someone in his ear on sideline (so as to not let the turnovers compound- 1 or 2 fine, but 4 is not near acceptable)

Where is the data to suggest that things will change?
MasterStrategist replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
Here's the simple data: 1. Turnovers (3 or more): teams week 1 in this category went 1-6 2. Turnover differential (-3 or worse): teams went 2-5 I honestly felt like this is where we'd improve this season. The coaches, and Allen in particular, have been harping all offseason about it. Needs fixed immediately. And as much as Josh says it's not a "snowballing effect", to me it is. We can see it all over his face, he needs someone to get keep him "mentally" calm/brush off when mistakes happen. Bc he will turn the ball over/make dumb decisions, they just need to be limited and not compounded. It's Kyle Allen/Joe Brady needing to help fill that role on the sideline. Moving on, 1 week doesn't make or break the season. It's the mental toughness that's needed right now. You learn that best when in adversity/tough losses, we've seen it before, but we need to snap into a different gear now. -
The safety was lined up with such inside leverage, Josh was "baited" into that throw. @Beck Water pointed out, we've ran that route concept ALOT. Gabe's route was just average. With the safety lined up that far inside Gabe was getting to his "spot". Yes it was 'rounded off' route, but Josh put that ball in a horrible spot AND late (bigger problem in general). I thought Diggs was coming open on the underneath crosser, would have to go back and watch. But to me, this was another 90% Josh mistake. Gabe could have ran a better route, ball was still late though. Dorsey could have dialed up something better. But if Diggs is coming open (as I expect to see), it's mostly all on Josh. He wasn't seeing the field well and made poor decisions. Same story as end of LY. (Not directed at you, but just thoughts): There were a few moments Josh "anticipated" and made great reads. The Diggs pass down the seam in 1st half, then the end of 4th qtr drive was amazing. That's what he's capable of every drive and what he should be doing. Somehow he's become hesitant/lacking confidence/too emotionally low at times/in his own head...thats where the coaches and leaders need to sit him down. Week 1 is just week 1, but it becomes concerning when it's a "mini trend" (Bengals game to this one).

I think it's 90% Josh/10% Dorsey right now. Concerns I have with Josh: 1. Not seeing the field as well as he needs to 2. Too ancy/not trusting the OL (OL does need to play better) 3. Mentally seems out of whack/not sure if this is him being too hard on himself. He just needs to be more confident and take what the defense is giving 4. Running: I think he's got to learn it's OK to run, but needs to protect his body/not take unnecessary hits Dorsey: 1. I'm not a fan of lining up in shotgun 99% of the time: it limits running attack primarily 2. Absolutely need more playaction/roll outs 3. Screen game and creativity in general is severely lacking 4. Running game: I'm not a 50/50 advocate, but we do need alot more balance. Especially helps the dline from just teeing off. Dorseys tendencies are basically the same issues I had with Daboll. Daboll was more creative/did adjust 2nd half of 2021 into the playoffs. Again alot of blame on Josh, but he's our entire offense. Feel like taking a bit off his plate, could be beneficial in alot of ways. Right now, it just seems like alot of mental stuff-and reverting back to feeling like he has to carry the offense. Dorsey needs to be find that "balance", because it's not working against top tier defenses.

Josh confidence level didn't look good all game. Honestly, it's just 1 week. If it becomes a trend, I'm not against firing Dorsey mid season. That would likely mean we're meddling around .500... not sure how we go the entire 2nd half (and brief OT), just in shotgun. No creativity, nothing to get the easy 4-5 yards on 1st down. It's the exact same.offensive struggles that appeared too many times down the stretch LY. It will be a tough pill for McD. but he might need to intervene
