He might have less success there if the whole system surrounding him was messed up, but I think a player of THAT ability would shine no matter where he landed. His talent would be obvious even on a bad team in a losing effort. I'm thinking of Troy Aikman getting killed in 4 win seasons (or whatever they were) early in his career. You still knew he would be great.

Retired NHL players talk about that sort of thing all the time. 20 or 30 years ago, I guess almost ALL NHL coaches were like that. They treated players poorly and ruled through fear. For a long time now (at least 10 years) players talk about how you simply can't coach that way anymore. The players these days have been stars since they were 10 years old and expect to be treated like stars...and they will simply tune out any coach who coaches in the old school style. The buzz word describing a good coach now is "communicator" and "knows how to work with young players."

Anyone who bets the over (over under is 44 I believe) is nuts. It COULD be a high scoring game, but all data says that is highly unlikely. I expect a close, tight, low scoring game, with mistakes on both sides. I'm thinking fumbles, drops, and dropped easy INTs will be seen. The kicking game won't hardly exist. Luckily not a lot of hitting exists in the NHL anymore. The league now looks much more like the Swedish Elite League than the NHL of the '70s, '80s, or '90s. Remember Scott Stevens killing people in open ice? Then, the mantra was "keep your head up, kid!" and Stevens was applauded as one of the greats of the game. Now, every one of those hits would result in fines and suspensions for Stevens. It's a different league now.

Interesting article on the playoff QB's.

Josh Allen is 6th FYI. Rodgers is best. -
John Clayton was talking about Flores yesterday, and how he is known to be too direct and hard to get along with--the sort of guy who alienates players and what not. I guess this supports that assertion.

most underrated move by Beane during his time here
Nextmanup replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
Very early in the rebuild plan, they obviously identified a whole bunch of people they thought were dead weight, and got rid of them all at once. Yes, that included Sammy Watkins and Marcell Dareus. And boy did folks here HATE IT at the time! LOL -
Yep; lots of them went to Buff state. Bulldog did, Howard Simon. That's Buffalo for you! I think Schopp went to St. John Fisher in Rochester. The kids Schopp and Bulldog get are some of the sharpest people at the station--way sharper than Jeremy White or stammering Bulldog, for example. I'm not quite sure how he keeps a job, given his difficulties in communicating verbally. They do have 4 hours to kill each day and he has a habit of taking 5 minutes to convey 20 seconds of thought...so maybe that's a good thing.

This game isn't just going to be another cold game. It's going to be the second coldest game in 49 years... Somehow this point is lost on people around here. 🙄

You are premising your entire argument on the assumption that the primary objective of the franchise is to win games and championships. What if it's to maximize profit? There's the rub. You think Pegula wants to spend $1 billion out of his own pocket to build a f-ing football stadium in Orchard Park, NY? And that assumes the state will throw in another $500 million on top of it. Domes are expensive.

YES. Not the first time that will happen either.

They have a tradition of having sharp, young, funny kids working for peanuts as the producer of their show. Invariably, they leave after a fairly short time to find more money or get a better job. I tend to like all of them. The last kid they had was one of my favorites, but the "new" guy Sneaky Joe is good as well. They're young and don't have the breadth of knowledge to put things in perspective, but they are sharp and definitely know the current sports scene. The more they talk, the more I tend to enjoy S&B. As a total aside, and something I have been paying a lot of attention to lately: make note of how long Schopp can go without making a reference to gambling in some way. It's about 5 minutes. The guy is obsessed with gambling, sports betting, fantasy leagues, etc. I'd love to know how much he loses a year. I can't stand any of that talk, and when he really gets revved up telling us about his fantasy football lineup (I literally can't imagine anyone in the world caring about that but Schopp) I tend to tune out, or shut it off.

The coldest experience I have ever had in that stadium is New Orleans at Buffalo, December 10, 1989. Google says the weather was: 26 degrees, relative humidity 68%, wind 13 mph, wind chill 15 My dad and I were sitting outside a few rows in front of my dad's employer's box for the first half. I was well bundled up (I would have been 18 years old) but was FREEZING MY ASS OFF the entire game. At halftime, my dad said "let's go inside the box just to warm up" and I think that literally saved my life. We went in there, talked to some folks, ate chicken fingers and other foods that were laid out, and ended up staying in there for the entire second half. If we hadn't had that warmth to retreat to, I would have been seriously cold by the end of the game. It was snowing all game and they were sort of "snow blowing" snow off the yard markers during TV time outs so you could see where the heck the ball was. We lost too! It's going to be a LOT colder than that on Saturday night which really puts it in perspective for me. Good luck to everyone out there! You will need it.

Don't be fooled---when it's -5 wind chill at kick off, and worse than that as the game goes on, it will be more difficult to throw and catch as well. The ball gets slippery and is hard as a brick. QBs have to adjust their hand position to throw in those temps, which is not ideal. It isn't going to be like throwing in a 40 mph wind, but throwing won't be normal.

In the latter time of the season, it honestly wouldn't be a bad idea. There have been constant updates and lively discussions in various weather threads for a good 3 weeks now.

Towne Restaurant, 186 Allen Street, in downtown Buffalo. Great Greek food and I have eaten there after MANY nights out on the town at like 4 or 5 am. They should be open plenty late. EDIT: Promotherobot says they now close at 9pm. That's sad!

Home field advantage for the playoffs - road to the SB
Nextmanup replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
I've been mentioning that there is no home filed advantage in the NFL, for at least the last 3 seasons, all over this board for a long time! No such thing as "momentum" or "trap games" and lots of other fan supported nonsense either. I agree with the OP that we STILL don't want our path to the SB to go through KC! Disagree Josh needs to "take another step." He just needs to play at or near the top of his game as it's been for the last couple of seasons. Has to have good games in all the games. Improved pass rush would certainly help, but I think defensive backfield coverage is more important. -
How Long will Bill Belichick Remain Coaching?
Nextmanup replied to Nextmanup's topic in The Stadium Wall
16-18 hour days 7 days a week takes it toll, no matter how little you micromanage. I don't see it personally. I think he has a couple more years and throws in the towel, especially when the next Brady doesn't show up and it's just a lot of tough sledding, especially compared to what he has been used to. -
It's scenes like this that make bringing your little ones to the stadium such a memorable, special occasion!

How Long will Bill Belichick Remain Coaching?
Nextmanup replied to Nextmanup's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't see him getting that record with the immediate outlook for the team. He isn't guaranteed 10+ win season like in the old days. I can see him trying to win a SB without Brady as some have mentioned, but I don't see that coming close to happening without a QB, and NE may not get another good for a decade. Who knows? They don't grow on trees, and Brady was found by dumb luck. -
How Long will Bill Belichick Remain Coaching?
Nextmanup replied to Nextmanup's topic in The Stadium Wall
No way he gets that record in 4 years. He may very well never get there. -
Good for him and I love our 2 safeties! But honestly, I don't really care about this sort of thing at all.

Interesting fact: there have been 511 head coaches in the NFL, all time. THREE (3) of them have coached into their 70s. 1) George Hallas 2) Marv Levy 3) Pete Carroll Pete has only done it for one year, as he turned 70 this season. Hallas and Levy are the only 2 guys IN NFL HISTORY to coach for multiple years into their 70s. Bill Belichick is 69 and turns 70 in April. The data suggests that the grind of being an NFL head coach catches up to you in your late 60s and these guys just can't do it much past that. What do you think?

Admittance to Highmark Stadium, No Drones allowed !
Nextmanup replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall
I find it interesting that "battery operated clothing" is prohibited. WHY? Some electrically heated gloves would be useful Saturday night. Luckily, no one is going to know what you're wearing.
