I think that is right. They asked Beane if Allen was their first choice and he declined to answer the question. Leads me to believe that Darnold was their first choice. I don't imagine Mayfied was ahead of Allen too, but you never know. Clearly Rosen wasn't. I give kudos to Beane for not lying and saying that Allen was first on their board when he wasn't. It would have been easy for him to lie and say Allen was first. I respect people who shoot straight and this was an instance where it would have been easier for him to lie... and he didn't. I have really been impressed with Beane and McDermott. Not just their football moves as far as the roster goes, but also the straight forward way they conduct themselves. For the first time in a long time, I feel like we have a management team that can be successful. I'm optimistic for the future.

I think McBeane is more willing to risk upsetting the fan base and keep Allen on the sidelines because they have the solid backing of the owners, who they ultimately answer to. Cases in point, the moves with Dareus, Darby, and Watkins. All moves that were met with more than a little WTF? by the fans but that McBeane thought was in the long term interest of the Bills. I suspect that McBeane believes letting Allen develop a little while behind McCarron is also in the long term interest of the Bills.

I haven't read the entire thread so I apologize if I am repeating what has already been posted above. I have been saying repeatedly in the lead up to the draft that what's just as important as selecting the right QB in the draft, was putting that QB in a position to succeed. There are probably dozens of QB prospects who have washed out of the league who could have been successful if they had gone to a different team with different coaches. That's what I worry about with Allen. If Allen starts this year, is he stepping into a situation that will hurt his development more than the game day experience will help him? Look at the disastrous Peterman fiasco last year. I don't think he will ever be the same. It would be nice if we had a better supporting cast around Allen before he steps on the field. Playing with confidence at the QB position is vital. Going out there Sunday after Sunday and getting crushed is not going to help him develop. Everyone talks about how great the Bill's Mafia is, but as anyone who frequents this board knows, there are a lot of Mafioso who can also be callous jerks, and after the controversy surrounding his selection this year, you know there will be a small, but very loud group of Bill's supporters who will take every opportunity to bash Allen mercilessly. Unfortunately, I think a lot of our local sport's media are in that hater group. Let's put a roster around Allen that will support him, not a roster that he will need to carry. Like most here, I think next year's roster will be much stronger after a year of all of our rookies getting some playing time, another draft class of talent coming in, and key free agent acquisitions. Most importantly, it will give Allen a chance to continue working on his mechanics, learn the play book, learn how to prepare for Sundays, and hopefully be able to experience some success when he finally does hit the field. We have invested a lot to get Allen, now we need to do everything we can as a franchise to maximize his chance to succeed, and I think that means sitting for a while and giving him time to work on his game before he is thrown out there.

I think it's just staying true to "The Process". Every position on this team needs to be open to competition and may the best man win. QB should be no different. Having said that, I hope AJ wins the competition and Allen has some time to sit and develop before he starts. I wouldn't mind if he sits the entire season...

I have absolutely no idea who this guy is, but he does bear a passing resemblance to Kyle Williams, and that's more than enough for me!!! Fantastic pick!!!

I agree, let him sit this year. It’s not just about picking the right qb, it’s about putting him in a situation to succeed. Wait a year, shore up the roster with your cap space money next year ($100MM+) and another solid draft. Then bring him in and have him play with a roster that can support him, not one that he will have to carry. We just made a big investment in Allen. Let’s not Peterman him.

Pegula saved our Bills. Like most Bill's fans my age (48), I watched Ralph get older and older and knew that sooner or later he would pass and we would become another Cleveland or Baltimore and lose our team, but unlike them, we were never going to get them back. Terry and Kim stepped in and saved our team and our city. Without the Bills, Buffalo becomes another Toledo. The Buffalo Bills are the heart and soul of our city. I know that most self made billionaires are "morons", but maybe in his case, with what he's done for our community, you might find it in your heart to cut the man some slack...

I know press interviews don't win games in the NFL so please don't say I'm equating the two... Contrast Allen's interviews with Rosen's. Rosen is a jerk. Allen sounds humble. Some compare Rosen's attitude to Rodgers and I think that is pretty accurate. The thing is that Rodger's attitude has emerged just over the last few years as he became one of the best QBs in football. I don't remember the rookie, never took a snap in the league Aaron Rodgers running his mouth like this. Aaron Rodgers has earned the right to be snarky. Rosen hasn't. One thing is undeniable, Allen and Rosen are going to be joined at the hip going forward here in Buffalo. Their careers will be compared constantly and one of them is going to be found lacking. It's never a fair comparison because they are landing in completely different situations, but that won't matter.

I think one reason to wait until a full year has transpired before putting Allen in is that I think next year's roster should be a lot more stocked with talent to support him. They will have a full compliment of picks, likely near the top of the draft, and over $100MM in cap space to put some studs on the O-line in front of him and some talented WRs out there to catch the ball. We are in a rebuild, don't doubt it. We were fortunate to get in the playoffs last year and it was great that we did, but I expect our record to take a step or two backwards this year. It is just as important to put a young QB in a position to succeed as it is to draft the right QB. In a year I think we will have a roster to help Allen succeed, not a roster that he will be expected to carry.

I am agnostic on the Allen pick, I have no idea if he is going to be any good or not. I do think you have a valid point about the support system for QBs in Buffalo. I would feel better about having a developmental QB prospect if we had anyone on the Bill's coaching staff who had successfully helped develop a QB before. I hope Terry, Kim, and McBeane address this situation ASAP.

I apologize if you find my post "useless" and "unnecessary". I admit, I did express a crazy opinion that maybe we should wait until Allen actually takes an NFL snap before we decide if he is a bust or not. I realize that I may not be as skilled at QB evaluation as other anonymous posters on a message board. I should have just sided with the majority here who have already declared him a bust. No doubt about it. It's a certainty. No chance for success. Wasted pick. Case closed. No dissent will be tolerated without labeling it as "useless" and "unnecessary". You might have noticed I never predicted Allen will be great or even good in my post. Just that I think those declaring him a bust might be a tad premature in their judgement. If you feel like you don't need to wait a year or two to see if an NFL draft pick is a bust or not, I would respectfully suggest, sir, that your posts are more "useless" and "unnecessary" than mine.

I don't pretend to know if Allen will be successful or not. I wasn't an Allen guy before the draft. In some previous posts I stated that I don't follow college football closely enough or have the knowledge base to have an informed opinion on who the best QB prospect in this draft is. I said I would put my trust in McBeane, root for who ever they ended up drafting, and hope for the best. I have no idea if Allen will be a great QB for us or not. What I am absolutely certain of is that no one here knows that he won't be either. That's my point... Thanks for your civil reply, I know my point of view on this subject is not the prevailing one.

That's a possibility, they may be tweaking the Jets who see their Mayfield slipping away. The Browns might be willing to trade back to 3 and grab a QB there in exchange for the Jet's 2019 first rounder.... This is getting crazy. I just need this draft to be over already...

The Browns might believe Allen has the highest ceiling and they don't mind sitting him for an entire year to work on his game. The fact that Dorsey went out and spent the first pick in the third round to grab TT is one indicator that they will be patient with their rookie QB. At the time they traded for TT a lot was said about how they overpaid for TT, but if their plan all along was to sit the rookie and let him develop, getting a serviceable starting QB was essential. They had to get a QB who could win some games for the Browns this year. I think Dorsey understands they can't have another one or two win season this year because the clamor to start the rookie QB would become too great. With TT in the fold, they can take Allen and give him time to develop.

Josh Allen or Mayfield going to at 1 might be bad news for the Bills. It has been reported often that the only QB to temp the Giants at 2 is Darnold. If the Browns bypass Darnold at 1, we could see QB 1-2-3 in this draft and that would not be good for us.

I think draft night will end up with Rudolph wearing a New England Patriots’ uniform. I think they will trade ahead of us into the teens to grab him if he is still there after our pick at 12. After two years of watching and learning behind Brady I think Rudolph will be a solid pro QB, much to all of our regret. I hope I’m wrong.

This fan base is just hungry for a great QB, myself included. For years now when the Bills are down 10 points in the fourth quarter you just know that we are going to lose. Contrast that with watching the Pats and Brady when they are down 10, you know they are going to pull it out somehow. It's frustrating. I just hope that the Bills front office doesn't draft a QB in the first round just to draft a QB. If they can trade up and get their man that's fantastic, and I'll be happy no matter who it is. If their guy(s) are gone though, I really hope they spend those draft picks on great players that will stock their young roster with talent and hopefully they can make a successful run at a QB next year. We have given up a lot to amass this draft capital, I don't want to see them use it frivolously.

You don't want to look desperate heading into the draft if you are wanting to move up and grab someone. Might make it more expensive to do so. If a franchise is willing to hire a private investigator to snoop on prospective draft selections, you can bet your butt they also have people collecting every scrap of intelligence on what the other teams are saying publicly (and privately if they can get it), they know every single draft visit for every team, they know who you talked to at the Senior Bowl, who you talked to at the Combine, they are talking up agents to see what they may have heard from teams about their clients, they are talking to the college coaches to see what they have heard. They are scouring the social media accounts of the players and their family members and college room mates, girl friends and team mates. Anything to give you an advantage on draft night. It is like the CIA vs KGB right now in the NFL. I'm so glad the draft is almost here, this waiting and endless speculation is stressful...

Respectfully, I just don't understand this attitude. In order to trade up there needs to be someone willing to trade back. Beane has no control over that. What if Beane and McDermott and the rest of the scouts believe that just two of the four QBs in this draft class will fit their system and are potential franchise QBs, but those QBs are off the board before they can find a partner to trade up with? Are the Giants, Browns, Jets, Colts, and Broncos supposed to go against their team's best interest and trade out to Buffalo because they are nice guys and we REALLY need a QB?? What would be a colossal failure on Beane's part would be to reach for someone they are not convinced is worthy of the draft capital required, just to draft a QB this year. I have a news flash for everyone....... There will be good QBs in next years draft too. I promise. There is no argument from me that it would be best if we could draft a great QB prospect this year, but it will not be the end of the world if they can't. Beane can't make the people in the draft ahead of them do what he wants them to do. If we can't get our QB this year, use our boatload of hard earned draft picks wisely. Fill in holes in our roster, trade back if you can and maybe pick up some draft ammo in next year's draft, but for the love of God, don't get pressured into drafting the wrong QB just so you can say you drafted a QB this year. That's the kind of desperation move that bad franchises make year in and year out with their rosters that keeps them perpetually bad franchises.

Indy’s GM has said repeatedly that they did not want to trade out of the top 10 but trading back to 6 was a great fit for them because the players they were targeting would likely still be available at 6, but not at 10. Not sure what you expected Beane to do about that. If Indy didn’t want to buy what the Bills had to sell, that’s that. Beane can’t make him trade.

I know, a converted WR coach who's only previous QB coaching experience was in the college ranks from 85-88 at Southwestern Louisiana I think....

I think all of the top 6 QBs in this draft can be successful in the right situation. Its not just about who the right QB is to draft, but just as importantly, putting them in a situation where they can be successful. Case in point, does anyone think Goff has the year he had this year if Jeff Fisher had returned to coach him instead of McVay???
