I watched both. Stephanopoulos challenged Biden on the court and several other issues, nd the audience asked pretty pointed questions. Guthrie did something Trump and his supporters don't like; she held hi to account and made him actually answer questions. When you have a candidate that refuses to answer questions then he gets what he deserves.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Let's hope they're on solid footing. There have been a couple cases now where Phase 3 trials have had to be stopped for detection of illnesses. We should all do a better job with our general health. That would be a great thing to work on for the future, but in the present we have a viral pandemic that requires all of to work cooperatively to eradicate. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
There is abundant data, both experimental and epidemiologic, indicating that mask wearing helps prevent spread of virus by holding down spread of droplets and aerosols. The data is irrefutable, yet people refuse to accept it because this has turned into a dumb political thing instead of what it is, a public health crisis. -
What would you like to see be done here?
oldmanfan replied to SDS's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I come on here from time to time. As an Independent, what I find coming here is an inability or unwillingness to have civil discourse. To me the PPP is mostly a forum for primarily right wing individuals, and many of them do not really want to debate; they want to share their opinions with each other without being challenged. There are a few from the other side of the aisle who have come in recently, and they go over the top too often. So to answer your question, I would abandon your current format and make the political stuff into clubs. While in an ideal world we could have a part of TBD where honest and considered political debate could occur, it is clear that won't happen here. It is a microcosm of our society where politics has devolved to a point where the fringe elements have the loudest voices, and those like me in the middle are left shaking our heads. Making it into clubs would let those of similar minds support each other, regardless of how narrow minded their opinions. From what I see here, that's really what folks on both sides of the political aisle want, so give it to them. I'll stick to football. -
Should the Bills bring in Marcel Dareus?

I do not believe a big tub of non-motivated goo is the answer. I would like to see Zimmer elevated. -
After a Big Bills Loss - Do You Avoid Internet/Media?
oldmanfan replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t. Not the next day. I’ve learned to avoid the thread during the game. The number of hacks who just come on to over-react and yell about how bad the team is based on one play has become absurd. -
Amy Coney Barrett
oldmanfan replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
She will be the next Scalia. And the world did not come to an end with Scalia on the court. If this court tries to take away things like the rights of gays to marry there will be a big political backlash, Democrats will take over the Executivexand Legislative branches, and when Thomas and Alito retire or otherwise leave then two more liberal justices will replace them and such rights restored. Unfortunately the courts have become a political arm of the parties in power instead of meeting their constitutional function. -

I suspect Beane is looking to add some more DBs -
Well he was a Yankee and I hate ALL Yankees!

Oh yeah. I hated him because I was rooting for the Sox, but he was one of the best to ever play 2nd base.

If Trump loses and refuses to leave

I don't think you have a clue what a true Republican looks like. If you think its's someone who supports Trump you're wrong. -

I do not believe that all those judges are in Trump's pocket. You saw Gorsuch rule against him on the transgender case, Kavanaugh rule against him on the case about being immune from prosecution. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
From the CDC (and you can also look at Mayo Clinic and any other reputable medical source): The virus that causes COVID-19 most commonly spreads between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet, or 2 arm lengths). It spreads through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes. These particles can be inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs and cause infection. This is thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Droplets can also land on surfaces and objects and be transferred by touch. A person may get COVID-19 by touching the surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. Spread from touching surfaces is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. It is possible that COVID-19 may spread through the droplets and airborne particles that are formed when a person who has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes. There is growing evidence that droplets and airborne particles can remain suspended in the air and be breathed in by others, and travel distances beyond 6 feet (for example, during choir practice, in restaurants, or in fitness classes). In general, indoor environments without good ventilation increase this risk. COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in many affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected. -

again, I do not see Roberts wanting to destroy the history of the Roberts court. -

It will still come down to courts if that happened and I don’t see either state or federal courts acquiescing to an election being stolen. I hope you are as well. -
If Trump loses and refuses to leave

Hardcore Trumpers are maybe 29% of the electorate. They are not taking over the country as the AOC wing will never take over the party. The Trump legacy will hopefully be that the majority of the country that are middle right or left will demand change. -
I suspect McD will take over some of the defensive calls soon.

I don't think so. I think you'll see true republicans like Romney take the party back. At least I hope so; having a Republican party that would go back to its roots as a party of true conservatism rather than the charade we see now would be good for the country. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
They absolutely do, there are any number of scientific articles that say so, and denying it is ridiculous. And to be clear, what masks do is help mitigate (not completely stop) the spread of droplet and aerosols which are the main routes of viral transmission. The virus is not shed as free virus. -
If Trump loses and refuses to leave
oldmanfan replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I would say no. My guess is that the Senate will turn Democrat after the election, and if lame duck Republicans try to force this then Republicans will destroy their party for the foreseeable future. The legal wrangling will be potentially crazy on both sides, but if Biden wins, say, Florida, on election night then any chance Trump wins is lost, and I think Republicans would go into self-survival mode. I also don't think the Supreme court will look upon this favorably. Roberts is very cognizant of his place in history; he will not want the Roberts Court to be seen as giving an election to one who has not won it. -

oldmanfan replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The Constitution says the duly elected President is inaugurated on January 20th. If that's Biden them Trump will be leaving the White House one way or the other. I suspect all Republicans will support that, or else they'll lose their party for decades. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Viruses require a host to propagate. If you and I each wear a mask then I have more trouble passing the virus to you and vice versa. Thus you limit the ability of virus to find a host and the infection rate dies out. We need to slow down the spread as much as possible until we get a vaccine that will hopefully immunize against Covid (although just this week two candidate vaccines had to be halted in trials so I'm starting to wonder if we'll get one) or until we have more effective treatment strategies (such as with HIV). When people talk about getting back to normal, much of what we did before Covid can be done now if we all wear masks and distance. For example, I go to church every week again. The businesses really getting killed are the bar/restaurant and theater industries. My daughter is a performer and opportunities like theater shows, cruise ships, etc. are gone so I get it. You want the spread to stop, as in no more Covid. So do I. That's not happening anytime soon. So we have to do our best to slow it down as much as possible. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I just looked up some data. California's rate of infection per 100k for the past week is the 6th lowest in the country. You may want to check that data yourself. Masks, and distancing work. Handwashing work. None by themselves are perfect and none by themselves stop the spread, but together they greatly minimize spread. Every public health professional, every epidemiologist, will tell you this. The data is irrefutable, and you are just simply wrong and being pig headed about it for some stupid political reason. You post drivel from a right wing talk fest. The data on scientific studies on passage of droplets and such through masks are irrefutable. -
