Today was brew day. I had one small problem and one major problem. It's unlikely this batch will be very good. The first problem was a low flame on my outdoor cooker (below). Not sure if the propane line isn't clear or there's come other issue but I had to boil inside. The house reeks but wifey took it pretty well so I have that going for me. Wish is nice. Second problem: I didn't notice that my chiller had a small hole in the copper piping. Didn't notice it until too late and so while I was cooling the wort I was also filling the fermenting bucket with water. I had to scoop around 2 gallons of watered down wort out of the bucket. I'm going to proceed anyway, but at best this will probably end up being flavorless.

Not sure what the powder actually is - the label doesn't list ingredients - but you mix it with water and then clean everything. With that said you're the second poster who mentioned Star San so I'll go that route if this batch doesn't work out.

Apologies in advance if this is TMI/LAMP. Just after Fathers day I'm sharing my boys favorite Steely Dan songs. I think its cool as hell that they like some of Dad's music. They are both above average musicians (sax and trombone). AFAIK they pretty much listen to rap, but for whatever reason they've never been keen on sharing their music with me which is disappointing. I hope they aren't trying to shield me from the lyrical content. My younger one was taken aback when I explained what the Fez referred to in is fave:

Much appreciated! For anyone that cares - we purchased a Honey Brown Ale kit at a local place and intend to brew tomorrow. I'm a bit circumspect about the following things, but wtf, sometimes you gotta stop dipping the toe into the pool and just jump right in: - the place I used to buy beer kits from had them refrigerated, this one didn't, that seemed sketchy - I'll be using sanitizing powder that's of legal age, could be a fatal flaw - the kit I bought specifically said not to re-hydrate the yeast, not sure why but that will save me a step I planned on skipping the first time back anyway - pretty sure my past siphoning technique was low-brow - put my hand around the siphoning tube instead of my mouth to avoid my nefarious bacteria. Unless I have a revelation between brewing and bottling day I'll probably do the same - wifey suggested I wear a rubber glove. Stay tuned...

You probably did see me - I was the one that looked simply fabulous! It wasn't the usual crowd, that's for sure. But that's not why I'm posting. Remarkably Pete is back today!! Vientos is the casualty as he got sent down. I'm fine with that because it made absolutely no sense that they brought him up only to have him ride the pine more often than not. @Gugny @Another Fan

Thanks for the info and advice - and good luck with the brewery research. I have the plastic fermenters and we have at least two places locally where I can buy the kits. I never graduated to choosing the specific ingredients and measuring/weighing. The one addition to my setup that was great was a chiller - basically a copper coll to run cold water through to cool down the wort. The one thing that for the life of me I can't remember is how I siphoned the wort from the fermenter to the bottling bucket. When I pick up the kit I'm gonna see if there's some kind of pump I can buy - saw something about that online.

I was looking at my old notes last night and apparently I had started to re-hydrate the yeast before pitching it into the wort and it made a big difference when it worked. I'll probably forgo that step the first go around and hope for the best.

Thanks. That's really interesting - one of the limiting factors when I pick out what to brew is that I can't stand IPA's and hoppy beers. To me it's like drinking nails. If I get back into brewing I'll try that but I'll definitely start out with something less hoppy than an IPA.

Good idea. I actually worked with a guy around the same time frame that I was brewing who quit his job in publishing to pursue brewing. I think he has a small scale brewery a few towns from me.

Just before the turn of the century I started getting into brewing beer. The last beer I brewed was a homage to getting married. Tagline on the label was "The last taste of freedom" and there was a pic of a guy in prison stripes with a ball and chain. Good times! Haven't brewed since but now that I have a son nearing legal age I thought it would be fun for us to whip up a batch together. All of my old equip looks OK. I have notes from all of my previous brews (roughly 7-8) but some of the details escape me. I always started with pre-measured kits - and experimented with substitutes like honey and lemon with mixed results. Not sure what's changed in the past 20+ years but figured who better than Bills fans to discuss beer? I'd appreciate any tips and discussion!

As mentioned previously went to the game tonight. The good: 6-1 win with 4 of the runs coming off two out hits. The bad: the game was just over two hours long. The pace felt unnecessarily rushed with the pitch clock. The ugly: second straight year I went to a Friday DJ night - ugh.

My guess is that a simple look over to third from the reliever would have stopped the play in its tracks - regardless whether he went stretch or full. Maybe the Yankees knew a tendency, maybe they saw something in real time, either way good for them. I'm a big time Mets fan so of course it was painful to see. But I'm also a big time baseball fan and can appreciate that the (hated) Yankees took advantage. Great play for the Yanks, embarrassing play for the Mets - however it went down.

You may be right. You also may be wrong. It's unlikely we'll ever know, but I think/suspect he tried to drill the batter when he either caught IKF coming down the line or heard his teammates yelling that he was coming down the line as that would have sent IKF back to 3rd. Said it to my son right after I saw teh replay and the next inning the ESPN crew speculated the same.

Interesting thing about that play is that I think the pitcher tried to drill the batter to prevent the run from scoing.

That moment for me came years earlier when as the DC of the Jets he gave the Dolphins the choke gesture after a missed XP late in the game that would have tied the score.

Whoever wrote that overlooked the fact that Correa is having an off year. Unless he's lost the clubhouse (and besides pointing at the poor play I haven't seen anything hinting at that) I'll be surprised if Buck gets canned.

@Gugny @Another Fan Ditto to engaging with our small group - I love hearing from perspectives I respect - whether I agree or not. Helps shape my opinion. Lindor is a fun topic. My closest friend despises him. He hasn't been able to rebut my claim that Lindor's 2022 season was the best season a Mets SS has ever had. At the same time I can acknowledge that while he is an elite defensive SS he's been highly disappointing at the plate years 1 and 3. He's gotta hit above .260 IMO On a lamp note - me and the fam will be in attendance this coming Friday courtesy wifeys company tickets. Last year we went and it was DJ night - which was horrifying for me. As is turns out this Friday is LGBT pride night, yippee. TBH I'm probably more OK with LGBT night than I was with DJ night. Either way I'm there for the game.

This comparison resonates with me 100%. I grew up with parents that were golfers and got pretty damn good at driving a golf ball. Drifted away from the game and when I came back my swing was lost and every time out was infuriating - to the point that I realized I was spending my discretionary time on something aggravating. So I stopped playing. I've also spent a lifetime rooting for teams (Bills. Mets, Islanders) whose bad times have far out-weighed their good times. and like you I intend to always remain a Bills/Mets/Isles fan - & enjoying the ride wherever it leads each season. Funny thing is a few of my closest friends like the same teams and they are in the rant/hate mode - yet they still root for the team. I don't get it, to each their own but seems like a poor use of discretionary time.
