For the most part Willie was before my time. But on a summer night in 1973 I saw him hit a 3-run HR against the Cardinals. At the time I was selfishly hoping it would be the last HR of his career, but he ended up hitting two more. RIP to a legend.

Yesterday there was a hawk perched on a tall tree a yard over. A young hawk kept flying up to it and then flying from branch to branch around what I assume was the mother. Then the young one would fly away (a couple of times around 20-30 feet over my head) only to return to the mother a few minutes later. This went on for awhile. Just a guess but maybe the mother was telling the youngun to catch it's own food.

Post your best Father/Son or Daughter sports moments

My wife and I took my boys up to Buffalo in 2017 and saw the Bills beat the Broncos. It was the game where Von took an ill-advised/questionable penalty late in the game and also where I took the photo that became my 2BD avatar. The weekend was great, the game was great but what I remember most was the great folks from Buffalo that we came across all weekend and how the whole family embraced it. Since then we've been rewarded with the Josh years. Good times. -
Tremendous post. To cap off Fathers day I'll share a pic of my two boys from Friday night. Good times.

It will be interesting to see what the trade deadline brings - especially after how it was handled last year. We're only a few games out of a playoff spot but we also have the 3rd worst record in the league.

@Gugny @Another Fan @ExWNYer Are any of you aware that the Mets haven't lost since the Grimace threw out the first pitch at a game earlier this week? I wasn't aware that the Grimace was still a thing let alone that he threw out a first pitch recently. I had the good fortune of attending the game Friday night making me 1-3 in person this year. Mostly a non-descript game, but me and the fam got to the stadium early and had prime viewing during the rain delay. Watching the crew pull the tarp off the field was fascinating. We also got the trumpets when Edwin came in for the save and ultimately he sealed the deal. Good times.

Nice(?) memory of the Francouer triple play, I forgot all about that. London got treated to an entertaining game today, I thought for sure we were gonna blow it. Here's another happy ending for the Mets from '86. Mets were up 6-5 when this play happened:

The context was a bunch of (young) guys partying on a smaller boat and being oblivious to anyone else not doing the same. Tour guide was funny, probably just his shtick, but since we locked into the Chicago river was wondering if it was a thing - and who better to ask than you.

Never seen a night so clear Half moon hanging like a chandelier Man, that moon got nothing on me Let that woman knock me to my knees Hanging on by a thread How could I be so misled Oh she drive me outta my head ---- Side note and shout to @DD4Bills - nice call on Baked Ziti Nights by the Scorps (good luck not hearing it that way going forward 😀)

Serious question @ExiledInIllinois - is 'bro boat' in your lexicon? Or was that some made up sh!t by a tour guide on a boat tour I took in your neck of the woods a few years back?

Most go with championship teams, I'd be more interested in the high talent teams that fell flat. Like the Eagles a few years back. Unfortunately if you don't win for the most part you're forgotten. Some teams I haven't seen mentioned: 70's A's before free agency, Torre/Mariano Rivera's Crankee teams, the Braves with Maddux/Chipper, Madden/Stabler's Raiders, Cooper/Stamkos's Lightning, Mario's Penguins. Deep talent on all of those teams. EDIT: throw in the Big Red Machine who probably surpass every team I mentioned

The list of most miserable fanbases in sports
SinceThe70s replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
Where are the Marlins? Has any other franchise ever gutted their team after a championship? Throw in the God-awful stadium remake a few years back and the awesome reign of Derek Jeter as part owner and CEO (hey, we should trade our best player to the Crankees!) and they'd be high up on my list. -
I'll use either on occasion, but neither on a regular basis and both as terms of endearment when I do. I doubt I'd use either if I actually had a brother. On the other hand, I've never called anyone (including my sister) Sis. But I will on occasion say something like 'you got that right sister!" to my wife.

Army/Navy World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (this one could be replaced by just about any rivalry game between two rabid college fan bases).

I forgot about Strawberry's number retirement - turned on the game just before they unveiled the number. They mentioned his apology during the broadcast and I'd like to hear it. Ultimately in spite of 1986 I feel like Gooden and Strawberry could/should have given us more. And I have mixed emotions on the number retirements. In general I'd prefer if it was a more exclusive group.

@Gugny @Another Fan @ExWNYer Another interesting day in Met-land. They send Narvaez packing. Hard to keep a catcher who can't hit or throw a runner out, but I think they are eating another 8 mill. The money Steve is paying for guys that don't play for the Mets has to be staggering. Narvaez was notable this year for finally getting credit for a caught stealing on a play he had no part in AND having his first Citi Field hit coming in late May as a walk-off. After sending Baty down it looks like Vientos may actually get a legit shot in the majors. Naturally he alligator arms a foul pop up. but he had a great day at the plate. I don't have high hopes for him but I hope he makes the most of the opportunity. Looks like Reed Garret's deal with the devil ran out. A nice story about the Mets calling up a 34 year old: https://nypost.com/2024/05/31/sports/mets-jose-iglesias-longed-for-mlb-return-wont-take-it-for-granted/

I'm a life-long Long Islander. Dad was from Chicago, Mom from Boston so there was no allegiance to Jets or Giants. At the time neither of those teams were very good or had much in the way of star power - Namath was on his last legs. Every year I was a fan of a different team until Dad took me aside and explained that being a fan of the Super Bowl winner wasn't really being a fan. I chose the Bills mostly because of O.J. but also the N.Y. connection.

Nice to see Lindor lead on the field (4-4) after apparently leading in the players-only post game meeting yesterday. Also nice to see Pete come off the bench with a pinch hit double and score the tying run instead of heading to IL for two weeks. Lots of baseball left for sure. A couple more wins and I'll get my positive vibes back. That would be nice.

Maybe I have rose-colored glasses but I think the team has shown heart. Saw a stat a week or two ago that had them something like (don't quote me) 12-24 in the first two games of a series and 12-6 in the third (aka - getaway day). Unfortunately while they've displayed heart, they haven't matched it with competence. Lindor is exhibit A. I don't put the .190 average he was carrying in the 3-hole on the manager. WRT Diaz, tipping pitches has been my first suspicion for any pitcher that goes bad for years, I gotta give more thought to the injury possibility going forward. Either way it's guesswork on my part.
