Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?

I dont care about preseason but will also be disappointed if nothing is different in the regular season. -

Correct they were not playing to win yesterday. -

Isnt that what they did last year? They had the highest takeaway percent. Problem is some teams chose to grind them out in response, but they most definitely played high variance defense last year. I would say offensively they played very good ball control game script type offense (Josh converting 3rd downs made this effective). So youre happy with the scheme or you just want better? -

Las couple of seasons? Please provide stats. Last year was different than previous seasons (agree that its cause of the loss of Hyde and Poyer, which started last year). -
He has a deep safety and if its cover 1 robber he has Andreesen as well. Sorta assumed you would send him towards your help. EDIT: Confirmed assumption. Unless you think it was a different coverage. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2032934-nfl-101-introducing-the-basics-of-cover-1

Would have liked to see Bishop with Shaq in front of him actually. I know why they played andreessen instead but I think that would have produced better results as Shaq is better in coverage and has seen more. With Andreessen's mindset Im sure he will go through this tape a million times to try and get better. Will be interesting to see if he can put it into action while still being a good downhill player in the run that got us so excited.

Yeah thats why i think cover 1 robber. just no crossers which is sorta surprising considering how much we struggled against mesh in man last year. EDIT: Rewatch and yeah I really think Andreessen needs to get more depth. Bishop gets beat but there are two routes behind Andreessen that you would want him to sink towards (crosser and this seam). After he pulls up on the run fake he should drop faster (Pretty sure this is the correct teach). I also say this cause he was getting to far forward on a lot of plays in this game. Thats often a tough challenge for younger players (see Dorian williams year 1). Agree its a bit concerning. He plays the leverage right if im understanding (wants to stay outside), but yeah way over does it and then the seam route is very open between Adnreesen and Hamlin. If he stays in phase better or Andreesen can read it better it could be a very different result.

I dont see much of a pick. I think he jumped outside too quick and then wasnt ready for the inside move and got out of phase. Its a sorta tough assignment being off ball man coverage on a WR. he failed at it and hopefully grows.

In your defense youre an awesome poster and have so many good contributions. No sweat.

Looked like cover 1 robber to me (Andreessen is def in a hook to curl). It was def MoFC. If it was Cover 3 would you expect the outside CBs to be getting more depth and be trying to identify threats? Dane Jackson slow plays the release of the WR at the bottom of the screen. Maybe im missing it.

Can't believe Babich called the stand around coverage. He should be fired. -
What? you have Hamler > Samuel? Thats insane. I have seen like nothing from Hamler. Coverage bust TD and couldnt drag feet to get in the end zone. This is after he got cur by his first team. I get Samuel underwhelmed but wow there is a big difference between those two. We had both last year for the playoffs and I preferred what Samuel did to Cooper. If its all about winning a super bowl then playoff stats are what its all about. Samuel had a much greater contribution than Cooper. Why is Cooper out of a job? Is he holding for a bigger contract?

Agree, i would also ask posters which tape do other teams are gonna use to scout. This preseason or last year? Of course the Ravens are gonna try to run it down our throats. Its what they do and we struggled against it last year. None of the preseason matters except for talent evaluation. Im not thrilled so many players aint living up to the test, but most of them are not going to be playing. -

We dont know what they do well cause they havent played a real game yet. We have turned over large parts of this defense and I expect more churn through the season. We have proven players at almost every position except S and DT. If were just off last season and we say what does this defense do thats good, the answer is take the ball away. -
Not beane's best class but interesting this list stopped just before Davis. I also think Grable has come along well and wont be surprised if hes a starter by the end of his rookie contract. SVG could also pan out on the interior and start before the end of his rookie contract, and Solomon has shown flashes both good and bad. Still plenty of time for players (especially the first 3 picks) to figure it out and get many contributors from this class. Like almost everyone i worry the most about carter.

I think lower and mid level receivers would actually really like Brady's style. Mack Hollins got his best contract after a year with Josh. The WR1 types will not like it cause they wont get target share, but lower caliber WR will get MORE targets in this theory (cause everybody eats). Considering we are very unlikely to have the money to get a WR1 type through FA (most likely route is through the draft), I dont think this matters if its true (it does seem intuitive).
-
Catching passes from Allen is the answer. Mack Hollins is pretty happy after a year of catching passes from Josh. So I would say your point (if true) applies more to higher echelon WR than mid to lower level WR who probably feel they have a better chance to get targets with Brady. Considering our best route for getting WR1 type talent is through the draft (cause we really dont have cap to get a WR1 through FA), I dont think this matters.

Gotcha. As mentioned I like shavers and would be happy with him on the roster. Would be happy with him in for Samuel’s every third game to keep him fresh. But yeah give me Samuel’s over Shavers in an elimination game. Thanks for chatting on the topic.

It reminded me of Emmanuel Sanders (and that could be totally not appropriate, def not as good Sanders in the deep space) in that he has the ability to maintain separation once he gets it. His foot speed is enough to keep distance from Surtain and then get to EZ (KC reg season TD is similar). Didnt do anything super twitchy or deceptive to get separation but if you lose him for a bit youre really gonna struggle to get back in phase.
-
Should clarify I mean as an intermediate route runner. His ADOT was pretty low at 4.4 (because of his role in the screen game) but I thought all of his 2024 TDs show his ability to get open in the intermediate area (2nd KC TD was more of a coverage bust). Particularly liked how he ran away from Surtain to really close the door on the broncos. I know Surtain got spun around a little bit and a lot of credit to Brady's scheme for that, but I think that gives a sense of what he can do in the intermediate.

This implies he was worse than people that were cut last year? I thought down the stretch he played well. I dont know why you have to try somoene else if youre please with his play. If they werent please with his play then why not call someone else up last year if hes not better than anyone on the PS (again not sure what you mean by not better than anyone). Do you think Amari had a better postseason than Samuels? Keon? Samuels was certainly more efficient than both (he had as many TDs as they had 1D combined, more yards than them combined, half the combined targets, double the number of 1D). I also have concerns on Samuels availability but thats a reason to put him on a pitch count more than its cause to cut him and roster shavers. I dont think our sample size is large enough to be in gotta try someone else land. I assume you want to fire McD for the same reason.
-
I would also be happy with him on the roster. I dont think he has more value over Samuels. Pretty certain Bills agree with me or else they would have called him up for the active roster in the playoffs last year. Everything you said applies to postseason (unless you think Samuels play has diminished from last year). So to say Shavers should be more is of more importance to the roster than Samuels is not supported by the evidence. Again I would be very happy with Shavers on the team.
-
No sweat. I know he has burst and it’s why I would be happy to have him on the team. I still think he missing parts of his game that Samuel has demonstrated. I admittedly was expecting this clip so sorry for jumping all over it

Team had the option last year of playing shavers over Samuel in the playoffs and other important games. They didn’t and I don’t think this years camp proves he’s better than what Samuel’s did put on tape (unless you think Samuel’s injuries have caused his play to diminish further). If they had the same contract would you put GabeDavis behind shavers? Would you put Samuel’s behind him?
