Here at TSW the debate over McD and Allen and who is responsible for the Bills success is always a hot topic. There are those who hold McD in mythical regard as he resurrected a 2-14 franchise and is the saviour. Yes hyperbole (never were they 2-14), because I have pointed out many times that Buffalo was seldom really bad during the 19 year drought, just never good enough. I know I will hear just what bad shape the Bills were in due to salary cap and other issues when Rex left, but they were too a team vying for the playoffs his last year too. Is McD a good coach, I think he is. Is he great, I don't think so and thus I am one to say his success is basically due to having Josh Allen as the QB. I have also blamed McD for holding Allen back and we still have not seen what he is fully capable of. This is the divide on TSW.... The chicken or the egg so to speak. Some think the Bills success is a 50/50 split, some may give McD more credit for the Bills and others say it is 80% due to Josh. Now that brings me to the next part of the thread and we have been through all these highly drafted QB's and when a team hits the jackpot with one, they better cash in or else. It then occurred to me that all the busts (or those that didn't live up to the hype) never really blossomed on another team. Yes some back-ups and fringe starting QB's have done well with a change of scenery and better coaches, but has ever a top pick (ie. first 15) flamed out and then became a star elsewhere? Jared Goff maybe the closest and is the perfect example of what having a great OC means to a QB. Anyone else?

If the Bills Don’t Make it to the AFCCG, Should McDermott Be Fired?
Billsfan1972 replied to Gugny's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not at all, just came to the thread late and not wanting to read 9 pages, where many of the arguments (mine included) have been stated before. Seeing you're in the pro-McD camp, not surprised you'd highlight my post. -

Oh no not a McD is the greatest coach ever not to make a Superbowl or McD hasn't gotten the most out of this team and continues to not reach their potential. At least since a poll as expected 70/30 split as most here worship McD (yes sarcastic use of the word worship). And as expected when anyone questions McD the emoji's (reactions) are vomit, eye rolls, X's & angry I think he's wasting Allen's best years and stunted his growth early (# never forget Peterman 😜). Oh and #13 seconds.😡 Not reading 9 pages of "are you for him or against him". -
Unleash Josh Allen...stop trying to change him
Billsfan1972 replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
What does that have to do with not running? Yes he's completing a lot and he is accurate. The issue is he is barely running and not taking advantage when there are plays there with his feet. -

How good is the Bills new starting defense?
Billsfan1972 replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
I hope we find out vs. Cincy. If they don't look competent against their next three opponents, there is huge concern. -

Oohhh you're so funny. Wow should take it on the road, with House. -

No not 17-0, but yes I expect to be at the same level as the Chiefs as the Bills have a qb that rivals Mahomes, better receivers (starting with Diggs) and two (should be) productive TE's. We've seen too many posts and articles that the "window is closing". I don't believe it, but certainly expect coaching to be better and ensure they are right there. No excuses (unless JA is injured). -

Again I've been through everything since OJ. The 4 SB appearances were great fun to witness and be part of. The down years not so much and usually hovering around .500 you yep ups and downs. Flutie and the playoffs were a rollercoaster (and the Rob Johnson debacle I'll never forget). Since then it was you never knew what you were getting week to week. Now the Bills have a transcendent QB, and sorry can't be laissez-faire week to week. Got to win now, so stupid losses like the Jets and Jax (and let's not go through 2018-2022 losses) bother me more. I want a NE style run (or KC now). Just the way it is. -

And I'll bet you on the Chiefs board, even though 5-1, many are not happy with their play to date. As lousy as Cincy has been they're 1 game behind the Bills. Lamar & the Ravens have looked very good at times, but a crucial loss last week may cost them down the road. SF & Philly are undefeated and haven't had a hiccup yet (Philly vs. Commanders almost). -
Three Downs to Total 10 Yards or Three Tries to Get 10 yards
Billsfan1972 replied to Chaos's topic in The Stadium Wall
With this offense it is 3 chances to gain 10 yards+, but Dorsey is experimenting with 3 plays to get 10 yards and don't like it at all. I said this over and over after the Jaguars game that we gave away plays and weren't at all aggressive. The first two series were inept. Why after a 6 yard run do you throw a 2 yard pass to Diggs that was short of the first down and no chance of getting it. Then a dropped pass and punt. Possession two, lined up and everyone knew a run and stuffed for -1 yards, followed by two 5 yard passes and half a yard short. Completely unimaginative and again counterproductive. Then later after a 9 yard pass play another -6 yard run. Just get the first down and establish some rhythm. Thank you Dorsey. -

I've looked at the 5 weeks in totality and the positives and negatives. I've pointed out some concerns, because yes I think these Allen years are the Bills chance to win Superbowls. Am I hypercritical about the HC? Maybe, but that doesn't take away from giving my opinions. The next three games should be laughers and the Bills better go 3-0. Yes I want 300 yard passing games and a sharp Allen doing things we've missed to date this season. The Defense I'd like to see get off the field. Cincy could right the ship in the next three weeks and yes that will be a "bigger" test. With high expectations I want to see 3 comfortable wins. -

Can only imagine the headlines Monday with Daboll and Tyrod in the mix. As they say they write themselves. We could see a wounded animal like Denver vs. KC playing a decent game on defense and keeping it respectable and then some Fans/Posters here with a usual "Just Win Baby". Tyrod has a above average game and again McD fans defending the wounded Defense. Daboll dialing up some schemes and Allen a little confused and then the 50/50 back and forth whether it is Allen being reckless or Dorsey's bad play calling and offensive schemes. Yep I want like the Eagle's last year (& SF right now) or KC when they were going full bore to just blowout the Giants (and all their inferior opponents), but that too won't tell me much. See above I answered it already. -

That KC continues to struggle scoring points regardless of opponents. Also the issues playing Thursday night. Next 4 weeks will be more difficult for KC. -

Billsfan1972 replied to Billsfan1972's topic in The Stadium Wall
You see the problem is the Giants & Pats are two of the worst offenses and Tyrod & Mc are no yardstick to measure the defense imo. Mayfield is a little better but TB is middle of the road at best and the Bills are home that week. The offense I won't be surprised if Dorsey goes to the dinks and dunks and running and Bills control games they should blow-out opponents, but frankly it won't say a whole lot. Of course if closer then need be, I too will worry. No win imo.😜 What did the Eagles do last year????? They were expected to be good, however went out and dominated. The Bills should do the same. -
Unless the Bills crash and burn, these next three weeks will tell me very little. Want to see three blowouts, and that should be the objective, but anything less as long as 3-0, I still won't get too concerned and probably will blame coaching and play calling. Maybe the two worst offensive teams in the NFL and Baker Mayfield. What can the Bills do that really will get you excited again?
-
It was Dorsey and lousy offensive play calling very little to do with Josh Allen. Dropped passes hurt too, but generally the useless run calls and dinks and dunks when it was obvious that there were plays down the field to be made was the downfall. Oh and the defense giving up 500 yards, and the offense never having the ball in good field position didn't help either.

The right mix between air and ground
Billsfan1972 replied to Italian Bills's topic in The Stadium Wall
The issues with the offense wasn't the lack of runs it was runs at the wrong time bad playcalls and passes short of the sticks. A 2 yeard pass on second and 2 is a wasted play. Add to that a few badly timed drops and that was the difference. However the defense didn't make the big play when needed either. They allowed 500 yards. -
Snippet from The Athletic Joe Buscaglia on Josh Allen

This year he's been told not to. Also his receivers running deeper routes. Allen can and should do it more. -

Hit the nail on the head,, but that is the issue. There were plays there early in the game, but the OC did nothing to help Allen and by the time Allen said "f" it, it was too late. -

Let's blame Allen again..... Geez this get's old. The second play vs. Jax says it all, a 2 yard pass short of the sticks. A wasted play and part of the KD arsenal. Yes sometimes it does work, but you could tell early that the run, short pass, short pass was wrong against Jax and their formation. All Allen needs is the edge to run for two yards. The Bills already too have 4 Ints on balls thrown over 50 yards. No other team has more then one. -

Well that will piss off some people (those that want Josh on a leash). Was watching a little Mahomes Sunday and when there is pressure and he elides a tackler, all bets are off as he can scramble. Josh is better, but you can see he's been told not to. Put a spy on him and a receiver comes open, don't and he has room to run. Not with the Dorsey dink and dunk approach they won't. -

As expected, I don't disagree. This may be the year the Bills need Allen to go scorched earth During the Bills’ four-year postseason run from 2019 to 2022, one of their staples has been a good-to-excellent defense in the regular season that can rescue the offense at any point. We even saw that against the Jets and early against the Commanders. But now, with multiple significant injuries to their defense, it’s potentially setting up as a year unlike any of the four previous ones. Outside of nickel cornerback Taron Johnson, question marks are everywhere on the back seven and the defensive interior against the run. It all could point to this being the year franchise quarterback Josh Allen has to go nuclear for the Bills to reach their goals. Outside of his Week 1 implosion against the Jets, Allen has played at an MVP level. He was dominant against the Raiders and Dolphins, and shook off a slightly slow start against the Commanders to have another excellent game. The Bills looked asleep at the wheel early in the Jaguars game, though that’s something I’ll be diving into when the All-22 comes out Tuesday. All of that was mostly without Allen drifting back into his college tendencies of not knowing the line between calculated risk and reckless. But should the defense have some difficulty limiting the opponent as their losses would indicate, this is an opportunity for Allen to hit a career marker in what is setting up to be the greatest quarterbacking season in franchise history. Allen, along with receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, have shown the potential to be prolific on a weekly basis. But they’ve been able to dial it back with games well in hand in three of their first five games. Plus in past seasons, they’ve been able to escape a down game based on the strength of their defense. That luxury may not be as prevalent against the many average-to-good teams they’ll face as their schedule gets much tougher, very soon. They’ll still have some of those blowouts against the lower-tier teams like the Giants, but once Week 9 hits with a trip to Cincinnati, those will likely be far and few between. If you’re a glass half full kind of person, should Milano and Jones be lost for a considerable amount of time, it could set the Bills up for the type of football they’ll need to play to advance in the postseason. Their most realistic chance of winning the Super Bowl came in 2021 when the offense was unstoppable and playing a mostly perfect game in one way or another over the season’s final month. For the Bills to accomplish their postseason goals, perhaps Allen needing to be the guy every week will be the ultimate catalyst for them in the postseason. Or, if Allen puts too much pressure on himself, it could lead to more reckless decisions with the ball and some in-game implosions and losses, but that’s the worst-case scenario. Either way, we may see Allen pressed in a way he’s never been before in 2023.
