Several times this year the TV guys would cut to a shot of R&R looking at each other like a couple of confused clowns. I'm sure it was meant to paint them in an embarrassing light, not that they needed any help...

Makes perfect sense. Did you not read the interview with Wawrow? Rex wanted an answer, and Pegula gave him his answer. Had they waited until the end of the season, then there would've been a full evaluation, including Whaley, before the decision was made public which would'be happened sometime this week.

Conjecture sir! I've read accounts here that suggest the opposite. Someone recently started a post about how Whaley overcame a coup engineered by Rex, and there are accounts that in Marrone's meeting with the Pegulas he demanded more control including personnel. We'll never know for sure, but it's probably somewhere between the two extremes.

In 2014 the O averaged 21ppg, the D gave up 18, and the bills were 9-7. With Rex, the O ppg has gone up by about 5, but the D has gone up 5.5 ppg, and the bills have been a .500 team. For both the O and D, the 2-year trend is up. Without having a franchise qb, the bills were able to generate enough offense to make the playoffs. The D failed them.

Would have helped to have Watkins, woods, and Clay together all season.

id make it simple, how many had a better 2014 draft? Still, it will be subjective because what's the metric? For example, we are just now seeing CK's potential. How good will he be? How do you account for injuries?

i would argue he should be judged starting with the 2014 draft because it's the first with his personnel team in place. Only one player out of 20 is not on an NFL roster and it's an injury issue.

Lost in the current brouhaha surrounding the Bills is the fact that Whaley AND Jim Monos are directing the HC search. While the media, especially our local guys, are having a field day generating click bait headlines about the so-called "dysfunction" of the Bills, the two most important people running football operations are directing the HC search. Any HC candidate worth his salt will be able to see through the current distractions and realize these guys represent one of the best personnel tandems in the business--the team of Whaley AND Monos (WAM) are an attractive selling point. While there has been significant debate here about Whaley's role in various drafts, there can be NO DEBATE about when the WAM team (Fisher should be included as well) started drafting, the 2014 draft. Whaley hired Monos and Fisher in June 2013. It has been three years since that draft, and many believe 3 years is when you can adequately judge a draft's worth. Here's a look. 1. Watkins. While you can debate the injuries and how much it cost to trade for him, there is no doubt Sammy is an elite WR (see Matter2003's post). 2. Kouandjio. While too many people labeled this kid (20 when he was drafted) a bust early on, it's clear now that he can be a legitimate starting LT in this league. 3. PBrown. Starting LB. Certainly people can debate about how good he is, but he's been a starter since his rookie year. 4. Cockrell. Starting CB for Pittsburgh. Unfortunately (for Bills) Cockrell was injured most of the 2015 preseason (Rex's first), and was beaten out by Butler. 5. Richardson. While CR fit the OL type that Marrone wanted, he did not fit Roman's scheme. Currently on Bears PS. 7.A. R.Johnson. Drafted for STs, currently with the Jets. 7.B. Henderson. First year starter at RT. If not for health issues (and weed for pain management), he'd be the starting RT. That is 5 starters (or starter-caliber players) from their first draft as a personnel team. They drafted 2 first-year starters with their R2 and 3 picks in 2015, and their only "miss" (currently not on an NFL team) in their first 2 drafts has been Tony Steward based on injuries. Certainly it's too early to judge the 2016 draft, but they should have at least 3 starters from this group as well. If one wants to find a criticism, I'd say it's they take a lot of chances on players with injury and character issues; however, their record is very solid. To reiterate the point: Whaley's personnel team is damn good. I believe they will dispel the any beliefs about current dysfunction in the interview process with prospective HC candidates and hire who they Billieve is the best person to take the team forward. The storm will pass soon enough, despite the attempt by the guys at the News to sell more ads...

i was thinking the same. It sounded like Sal too, and he should certainly know better. There's obviously Vic's Vendetta against Whaley going on as well.

I interpreted the continuity-familiarity correction to mean that Lynn is not Roman or Rex, and his O and D won't be a continuation of their schemes.

hiring a couple of good coordinators takes care of it.

i would suggest Rex wasn't his first choice, but he figured he could work with him because they shared the same run/stop the run philosophy. Saying Rex was not his first choice does not equal he was against the hire. As for your second point, fired for potential disaster, really?

whaley provided his thoughts on all things football throughout the year to pegula, and pegula knew rex wasn't Whaley's first choice to begin with. Pegula knew where Whaley stood on the decision. Rex reported to pegula because he wanted it that way. When Rex wanted an answer about his future, pegula obliged. If you want to paint pegula as meddling, that was done when he chose Rex in the first place. This is acknowledging he was wrong, and he's letting Whaley chose this time. Unless the new coach grabs Kim's ass, pegula will hire Whaley's choice.

I read it this way: Rex forced the issue when he spoke to pegula in private. Pegula was decided that he would move on from Rex already and let Rex know man-to-man when Rex raised the question. Had Rex not forced th issue, the decision would've been made this week and Whaley would've been in the middle of the conversation. If Rex was Whaley's guy, then he might've tried to talk to pegula about the decision. Not questioning means he was 100% in favor of it. Given how it played out, Whaley could say he was not privy to the conversation, and he hadn't really thought about the firing, rather he simply moved on and didn't question the move.

they've drafted 3 O-linemen since 2014. One starts at RG and got pretty good reviews this year, one has started at LT 3-4 times this year and received glowing reviews, and one was released (5th rounder). Seems he's done pretty well.

if there's a run of QBs among the qb needy ahead of the Bills, they'll have a good group To pick from.

How could he not have good coaching when the bills have so many of them?

It's pretty clear the pegulas realized Rex was a mistake on many levels. It should also be clear that Rex wasn't Whaley's first choice. I'm sure Rex's philosophy was consistent with whaley's so they could work together. By letting Whaley call the shot this time, they've owned up to the mistake internally. Whether they own up publicly is another matter.

as I just posted in another thread, the Bills were able to get Wade Phillips in as D.C. Because he was promised the HC job when Marv retired. I could see a similar thing with coughlin agreeing to do 2 years, then handing off to Lynn (or whom ever), so to speak...
