My issue though is you aren’t basing that on anything. I’m giving you multiple reasons as to why it’s possible. The scouting community being high on him and the history of Beane’s mentors dictate that it’s possible. The Bills RB is coming off of his worst season, has a big cap number and is on the last 3 holes of his career. The Bills lack playmakers all over the field. A 3 down back that blocks and is a high level receiver is certainly appealing to them. This holds especially true when the Bills OC was his OC in college. That’s a LOT of reasons to believe that it could happen. Not saying that at all. I’m on record as saying I’d draft a defensive player in the top 10 because I believe that’s where the top end talent is. If you read what I wrote (which you never do) there are a lot of reasons to believe it is possible. See the previous post...

It’s not. They had other options to fill that role as the draft went along (Warner, Leonard, etc..). I can promise that a team drafts on BPA. They have tiers of players and may move up or down depending on where they have guys. In a situation like Edmunds, they indicated that they were shocked he was still there. That tells me he was graded highly to them and there was a drop off to the next player. Fitting a need was a bonus. They went to get him though because of the quality of the player not the position. It is possible that they take a MLB (Devin White) at 9 this year.

It’s not though. You are ignoring history John. Carolina took one in 2006, 2008, 2017 and then Beane’s boss took one in 2018. These are the people that Beane learned from. He may very well think Jacobs is the best weapon in the draft (as Jeremiah thinks). It isn’t impossible to believe that the Bills would want that guy. They aren’t exactly loaded with playmakers. Pretending it ISN’T an option is burying your head in the sand and hoping. It absolutely is a possibility (as are many other guys at this point). Again, that’s based on what you are hoping. They have never said that. They want to add a guy there. The Panthers (and Gettleman) have had a history of doing it. You aren’t using the past to shape your opinion. You are basing it on what you hope.

I guess that in a 2 year span they get credit from me (who was a wait and see guy) on their rookies. Tre, Milano, Wallace, Johnson, Foster, Edmunds, Zay, Dawkins, and Phillips have all contributed off the top of my head. Part of that is because the team hasn’t been great but partly because they added the right guys.

FWIW, before hating it let’s learn a little about the player. This is my plea for the entire draft season to all of us. These guys have drafted well. That’s an area where they have earned some trust. Before we fall in love or hate a player let’s at least know the player. This way we can discuss the pros and cons at a much deeper level. https://thedraftnetwork.com/2018/12/19/5-play-prospect-rb-joshua-jacobs/

I know you want to believe that but listen to the GM and look at his background. His old boss took a back at 2 last year. These guys believe in that and the most trusted in the scouting community are falling in love with Jacobs. Miller and Jeremiah are two of my favorites and they are both extremely high on him. I don’t think it’s likely but this crew has drafted backs early, often. It absolutely isn’t impossible. A back is high on their needs list as it is.

The best teams ALWAYS draft BPA. They don’t have a lot of needs. QB is a total exception and not a part of the conversation. You draft the guy that you think is most likely to make the biggest impact. Sometimes you factor in holes, or holes that may be there in a year but that breaks ties, it doesn’t dictate the plan. As an example, at 9, it could very well be an edge rusher. While Hughes, Lawson, and Murphy (plus Yarborough) are fine the chance to get a Josh Allen or even Montez Sweat May be something you can’t pass up. OL & Pass catchers are bigger needs but if Allen is 5 on your board and Jonah Williams is 11, Metcalf 13, they are taking the edge rusher. That’s the concept of BPA.

Problems with making PI reviewable...

It works fine in Canada. The goal is to be right. We are WAY past the point that we should allow the amount of human error that we do in sports. In tennis they can see if a ball is in or out by a millimeter in 3 seconds. Technology has changed things. We need to find a way to get it right and go with it. -
Football insurers continue to get out of the market...

Yeah, I commented on the school end later. There are still plenty of programs that do it but the costs are rising. My buddy actually won a school last year on this exact issue. Their program had an exclusion for mental anguish and the example was exactly what you are referrring to. If a family sued the district over the hardship of a kid that struggled from football related injuries they would have been coming out of pocket. The other thing that hasn’t been mentioned (and a real insurance issue) is that these injuries develop over time. It’s the asbestos example. It’s an “occurrence” issue. When does it take place? It is a series of events that lead to these injuries and the claims may not arise until years later. They basically have to have the insurance in place for YEARS after they stop playing or take the chance that no claims will arise. -

We’ve kind of seen it for the last 15-20 years already. The best college teams are loaded with kids from Georgia, Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Alabama. The talent is down here because they are still playing the game. You’ve seen a massive drop off out west. The best players out west are now heading east and there aren’t enough guys playing for USC to be relevant. -

There are still a bunch of school programs that cover football. It is certainly an expense for the schools to insure football (cheerleading and soccer). I don’t see a situation where it disappears, there will just be less companies writing it which will raise premiums. This is the wild card.
