  1. Wish I could be there. Sat through many games yelling "Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuce" Had seasons back then.
  2. Who cares what USA TODAY thinks??? Last Sunday they expected us to lose to a team who had been in the playoffs last year. Buffalo just needs to keep their head in the game and ignore the so called experts.
  3. Ricky Williams had mental problems because of drugs (which has been proven by the number of times he's has beens uspended from the NFL). Not sure what Vince Young's problem is.
  4. When we lived in Buffalo and had season tickets, we owned a bar in Kenmore. We live in Florida now, both working for the county government. Since moving here, only been to one game down in Miami.
  5. I've been to Indianapolis, Miami 3 times (Joe Robbie or whatever it is called now), Cincinnati and the old Cleveland stadium. Cleveland doesn't count because Buffalo fans were louder than Cleveland fans (we beat them 56-0 or something like that and by the 4th quarter we were the only ones left) and Joe Robbie was in the era when Kelly beat Marino on a regular basis (won 4 beers from a Miami fan one game). Indianapolis was loud because it was a dome but the Cinci fans were louder. Rich Stadium, as it was called when I had season tickets, was definitely the loudest.

  8. ITo his family, my deepest sympathy. To the City of Buffalo, they have lost their greatest national voice. He never forgot his roots. He will be missed as a fair and impartial news reporter.
  9. The goal posts came down twice after that. Against the Jets in 1988 and against Miami again in 1990. And I was at all the games!!!!
  10. As a team I hate them. To pick out just one player would be tough. I do remember after one Buffalo win someone posted an ad in the newspaper for "A slightly used defensive back, with a big mouth, for sale." They were refering to Oliver. Carried that ad in my wallet for several years but somewhere after time it go lost. Jimmie Johnson is the worst!!!!
  11. Great montage. Shows why he was the best all-purpose 'back in Buffalo history. He also led the league for what, 4-5 years in "all-purpose" yardage (running and receiving) for a running back.
  12. Bobby Chandler was a favorite of mine. I remember that catch. He was also great on the sidelines. Nobody could keep his toes in bounds like he could.
  13. Remember when we went down to "Lou Awald's" to check out the 'Vette after it hadn't been made for a few years? They even offered to let us take it for a test drive. Scary!!!
  14. I watched this four times. Did anybody else notice that the first pass highlighted was intercepted??????
  15. I live in Florida, not in an evacuation zone and after 4 hirricanes and 1 tropical storms in 2004 in Florida, I was grateful because I had no problems. Then last year was Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Other storms in that time frame caused some wind and rain but not enough to cause trouble at my house. (Tropical Storm Gabrielle caused two trees in my yard to come down in 2003.) Someday my luck here in the Bradenton-Sarasota area will run out. I have canned food, I have bottled water, I have batteries, I have gas for my grill, I have a generator But am I really prepared? I live inland so the surge worries me but that is not my major concern. The wind scares me. Though I have a new roof (done less than 1-1/2 year ago) will that hold? Water is a killer, but people forget that Andrew was also a major wind event. Homestead was inland and the damages were because of wind mostly (and tornados) not water or storm surge. Will my roof hold up to a Cat 3 or greater I don't know. I work with this information daily as part of my job. I moved from New York eleven years ago and in seven years (doing this job) have learned to be better prepared. It is not a joking matter. I willingly made the choice to live here and I will just try to be as prepared as I can be for the worst. I have lived through blizzard with 75 mph wind (which is hurricane strength), I will live through this by being prepared.
  16. As someone who lives in Florida and whose job is to enforce regulations set forth by FEMA in the Code of Federal Regulations, I would like to vent. I'm not saying that FEMA responded quite as they should have during Katrina (because of M. Brown and the Dept. of Homeland Security), but the local and state government failed their citizens by not being prepared. Here in Florida, anyone connected with some sort of emergency management or FEMA regulations, we are taught that the local government, then state, then federal is how response will proceed. We have training exercises and classes. I'm not saying FEMA was perfect but why is no one getting on the mayor of New Orlean's case or the governor of Louisiana's case like they are on FEMA. They are the first line, they should have been better prepared and better responsive. I once lived on a barrier island and Hurricane George was heading our way. At six a.m. the morning before (24 hours) issued an evacutation order and the police and fire departments went up and down the island with loud speakers telling people to evacuate You are talking an island with only about 15,000 permanent residents and maybe 15,000 vacationers. New Orleans had ample warning, and for those with no transportation why didn't Nagle commander the buses? I personally have met and worked with several people from Region IV of FEMA. They are hard working and caring, and responsive, and have at times, spent months away from their families helping people in need. I think FEMA should be a separate entitiy away from Homeland Security. FEMA was its own entity before 9/11, and they need a director with emergency response and preparedness experience, not a "appointee" like Mr. Brown who had no experience in emergemcy management. As someone who wrote in the local paper here, Florida in 2004 had 4 hurricanes and one tropical storm and yes there was a lot of damage but hundreds less the death count of New Orleans. Why? Because we have local governments and a state government that doesn't hedge when it comes to these storms. It's better to evacuate and if the storm doesn't hit, thank God, than not respond at all.
  17. I work with floodplains daily in my job. First off, if your community is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program, and you don't live in a high-risk area (every zone is a flood zone, A and V zones being high risk, B, C, and X considered low risk), and the insurance company wants $500 a month, they need to be reported to the NFIP as they are trying to rip you off. The costs of flood insurance are strictly regulated. Biloxi and DiBerville are participants in the program (this information available on fema.gov). Most people in the low-risk zones pay under $300 a year. $500 a month is usually paid by someone whose house is not in compliance with the floodplain management regulations (which a community must have to participate in the program). Any new construction within areas designated as part of the Coastal Barrier Resource System absolutely cannot get flood insurance (where is I live since 1990). Only houses built prior to the designation are eligible and only if they have had continuous coverage since before the designation.
  18. As a kid in Kenmore, my sister would take me to the local library often. To this day, I'm an insatiable reader. I average about three books a week. That could get to be very expensive if not for the public library. I can reserve them over the internet (which I do) and they let me know when they are in. I usually go on my lunch hour as the branch is only a couple blocks away from work. The only drawback is that sometimes you're on a list for a few months before getting a book, but in the long run it is worth it to be patient.
  19. They have been allowing MADD to be at the checkpoints here in Florida for some time. I agree that an untrained civilian should not be there.
  20. Why did you move out of Buffalo? When my husband and I sold our tavern in Kenmore, we decided to really start fresh somewhere else. Where did you go? We came to the west central coast of Florida. We had vacationed here and liked the area. There were less people in the whole county than in just the City of Buffalo when we moved here, though its growing. How does it compare to Buffalo? People here are nice. If you pass someone when out walking, they say hello. Housing costs were reasonable when we first moved here, though they now say the median price for housing is $305,000. Property taxes are still lower. We're still paying about $300 less than we did for a comparable house up there in 1987. If the economy and job market were still stable, would you move back? I still have family there and have been asked this. No, I wouldn't. My husband and I both lucked out and got jobs with the county government here. Pay scale to start wasn't the greatest, but this area is growing in leaps and bounds and we've both been able to advance, have good benefits including pension. While I do miss a true spring and fall (and my family), I do not miss the cold and the snow of winter. What suggestions do you have to improve quality of life here? The big thing is to lower taxes, just not for the citizens but to entice companies to locate there. (Maybe get New York City to become it own state or district like Washington. That sure would help the rest of the state.) I agree with the one poster that they should regionalize. They have too many duplicate services. A prime example is if you live in Kenmore, you pay to have a mayor, public works department, police force, tax collector, etc., but you also have to pay the Town of Tonawanda for their town supervisor, public works department, police force, tax collector, etc. and then pay the county on top of that.
  21. There was a Reid's at the Kenmore-Tonawanda border. Never really tried it for the dogs. Burgers weren't bad though.
  22. Pat's was the best. Preferred them over Ted's. When we moved when I was a kid and Louie's was closer, that's where we went. Great curly cues also. Now when I visit Buffalo, have to make a trip to Ted's at least once. Another one that was good when I lived in the City of Tonawanda was Old Man River. Also great sweet potato fries. My husband's favorite is Louie's Texas Red Hots for what he calls "scum dogs" (hot dog with everything). As a kid, he went to Seneca Street near Cazenovia Park. Here in Florida, the best are at home on the grill; haven't found any that compare to back in the Western New York area. When we have someone bring us Sahlens or if we bring some back after a trip up there, nothing better (but will make do with natural casing dogs from a meat store on Manatee Ave. called Chop Shop, which aren't bad), especially with Weber's horseradish mustard which we stock up on when we go to Buffalo. There is a website where you can order Sahlen's and Webers, www.buffalofoods.com, and they will ship anywhere. It's going to cost more. Used to have the website for Bocce's Pizza, but lost it somewhere. For about $60-$65 they'll ship a half-baked pizza anywhere.
  23. I switched from Alltel to Verizon. No problem at all with keeping the same number. It is as easy as it sounds.
