The Battle of a lifetime: Klein, Spector, Dodson, Bernard, Williams
NewEra replied to NewEra's topic in The Stadium Wall
They’ve earned the benefit of the doubt…. But do you not have any opinion? You just say “if they like it, it must be good”? I have no doubt they have a plan for the LB position as well. You’re just more confident that it’s something specific. It looks to me like they’re just throwing stuff against the wall with hopes that it sticks. Power in numbers- with hope that one guy will step up and take it. Draft guys that play STs and try to develop them. That said, I’m happy that they didn’t spend a 1st or 2nd on the position, especially in this draft. I just don’t see the path to playing time for both Bernard and Williams- -
Yeah right- that would be terrible. You’d be so annoyed after the first few hours

It’s the day 3 of the draft. This is what we do on message boards. We discuss the draft picks. We share our opinions, projections, predictions and feelings. My initial reaction to this pick was: can he play Mike? If he can, will he be good enough to start this season. I watched and read a ton of scouting reports on him and every other off ball LB. What I had gathered was that he’s best outside as he has no anchor to take on blocks, has serious issues shedding and most importantly- was on the slower side processing and had below average instincts reading the run AND in coverage. It seemed to me, that all he had going for him was speed, length and tackling ability. I was hoping to draft a LB that had a chance to start over the LBs we had. I don’t think that’s an option this year. I’m rooting for all of these kids and for the coaching staff to put this puzzle together. I just don’t see how the prices fit together and they seem redundant- especially for a day 2 pick at non premiums positions. Think motor and moss. Didn’t make sense then. It proved to not make sense years later. -

Except I’m not miserable. I don’t complain about much actually. Im one of the more optimistic posters on the board, but I keep it real when I think they are making a mistake. If the FO makes a move I find questionable, I look for reasoning. If I don’t find the reasoning adequate, I post on message boards and see what others have to say. In this case, both bernard and williams both project to the outside, not the middle. They were drafted on day 2 in back to back years while our best defensive player also plays outside and our GM said the plan is to keep him there. So by Beanes word, I do know how they plan to use him- which leaves a gaping hole at the Mike. based on taking Bernard and Williams in consecutive years rd 3- there is plenty of reason to question wth the plan is. It’s what people do on message boards. Seems to me that we used 2 day 2 picks on non premium position back ups/ ST players. I’m of the opinion that we invest too much into ST units as it is. And here we go again. what do you think the plan is for Bernard and Williams? -

Nfc teams realize they can’t compete with the AFC in the air because there’s only 1 good QB in the NFC (and that QB ran for 13 TDs). Nfc teams look to be going more run heavy when compared to the afc. -

Very fair point if true. Thanks -

I’m asking you what your thoughts are about Dodsons play vs the Vikings last year. -

So less Taron johnson or less Daquan Jones? Maybe both? Doesn’t seem like a good trade off other than continuously keeping the opposition guessing and confused -

But wasn’t that supposed to be Bernard? Locked in the same spot last year? -

Thought on Dodson vs Minnesota? I really don’t think he’s worthy- I hope I’m wrong -

Maybe we plan on having Milano out there 💯 of the time, then have 3-4 other guys each playing 25-33% of the time depending on down and distance. klein on 1st and obvious running down while Williams, Bernard and rapp getting some play on passing downs -

Fans think that it’s ridiculous to use a 3rd rd pick to draft a player that has no path to start on this team for the next 3-4 years. Fans think that it’s a complete disaster to do this two years in a row on players that play the same exact position- it’s baffling. It could. Dodsons play in the 2nd vs the Vikings after 49 went out was abysmal. If that’s what he is, we should probably just cut him now to make sure we don’t have to relive that experience. OT - we should cut Cam Lewis now too -

I don’t disagree with this It’s one of the reasons I made the thread. It just makes me think that Beane sucks in some regard. He drafted Milanos backup in Round 3- two years in a row—- and signed Milano to an extension (which I’m happy about) in between. Why? I’ll never understand- unless they saw enough out of Bernard already, but I really doubt that’s the case. Is there a chance that we play Milano at Mike? Beane has said no early in the offseason- they want him to play the role he’s been playing. maybe they start running more sub packages using 3 LBs? If not, is special teams really THAT important where we’d use a 3rd rd pick on a guy that we project as a backup…… two years in a row and they back up the same position?!?! Like 🤦🏻♂️ -
https://thedraftnetwork.com/sr-prospect/dorian-williams-f030601f-289a-4ba7-8714-6db6e4405486/ Williams profiles as an impact special teamer that can provide depth at linebacker on defense. He has the physical makeup of a starter but has to get stronger, play faster, and develop instinctively to envision him as a starter at the next level. Ideal Role: Core four special teamer and reserve linebacker, preferably a WILL Scheme Fit: There is a path for him in any scheme TDN Consensus Grade: 69.00/100 (Sixth-Round Value) Marino Grade: 69.00/100 Written By: Joe Marino

I agree. I hate the Williams pick. Like really hate it the more I watch. I don’t think this dude will ever be a Mike. We drafted Milanos backup in round 3……. 2 years in a row. 💯 baffling. while we trot out Spencer brown to protect Josh Allen.

Fwiw- Joe Marino destroyed this pick. He’s supremely disappointed. So am I. Beane said they’re starting him out as an outside LB and will compete to be Milanos backup and ST- 🤦🏻♂️ round 3- after taking Bernard in rd 3 last year- 🤦🏻♂️ Spencer Brown the year before 🤦🏻♂️ Zack Moss the year before that 🤦🏻♂️ sheesh Thankfully - we also drafted Kincaid and Torrance Cunningham on run downs and rapp on passing downs -
If some of the rumors about teams despising his disposition are true, I wouldn’t. The FO knows more than us in that regard. I’m generally not a fan of drafting any player that big. It’s difficult to play in the nfl and remain healthy. It’s my belief that it’s much more difficult when your 6’8 380 No. Now we have a beastly OG that was projected as possible 1st rd pick and best OG in the draft. A OG that didn’t give up a sack in college.

This gets better with time! Like a fine wine

i love his speed, coverage and tackling ability. I’m just not sure if he processes fast enough to avoid getting swallowed. I think he has a spot in the league and will get better with time. Just don’t know if he’s starting Mike material in 2023, if ever -
I don’t know man. We just think differently in this regard. I was begging for Trey Smith for 5 rounds. Meanwhile you were thinking that he’s slipping for a reason and that the nfl knows best because they get paid and you’re on the couch. I was right to be furious about picking Marquez Stevenson and a Rachad Wildgoose. Beane and the entire nfl failed in their Trey Smith evaluations

Bernard?

You hate it when people consider their own prospect projections while determining if they think someone is a reach? This is strange coming from you. I have nothing but respect for you. Maybe we have different definitions of reach? I thought Terrell Bernard was a reach. I thought John Ross was a massive reach. I thought Mika Mamula was a reach. they were all drafted….. but shouldn’t have been drafted that early- A team drafted them prematurely. Hence a reach. If what you say is the rule, the term reach wouldn’t exist. But it does exist.

I liked him in rd 4-5- seems like a reach. I wish we took Ika, salvederi or jones. if we went LB I wish we went To’oTo’o
