ESPN Truth and Rumors: Buffalo and Vick
Astrojanitor replied to sharper802's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is an ongoing argument that says we should be cheering the laundry, regardless of who is dressed in the Bills costume. But I feel the laundry should actually stand for something. I know I am not a Bills fan because of my love of blue shirts and buffalo decals. The uniform should be a symbol of what Buffalo represents, of the value system of the region. For example, a guy like Deion Sanders would not have worked here because he does not fit in with a Buffalo mindset. Same with Vick. Beyond his shortcoming as a QB, which are many and well documented, his wholesale disregard of the opportunities given to him runs in sharp contrast to a blue collar region like this. How could we possibly support giving millions of dollars to man who is so willing to turn his back on his team, fans, and responsibilities through vicious and sociopathic criminal activity? I cheer the Bills since they are the home team and fully represent that which is both good and bad about western New York. During the years I lived in Pittsburgh and Oklahoma supporting the Bills helped remove homesickness. Every Sunday allowed for a small taste of home. But signing a lunatic like Vick? To cynically hire a gimmick, to bring in a mediocre QB in order to get a few minutes of national attention, to bring in a guy that offers no logical solution to a serious problem in order to get mentioned in Peter King's column a little more? That doesn't really fly. Look at how people react towards the rumor of Lynch stealing $20. Fans are outraged such a petty thug represents our town. Compare that to a guy who developed a complicated organization dedicated to illegal gambling and animal torture/murder. Slightly worse than acting like a d-bag in an Applebee's, no? -
word. +100

I'd say Cowboys. People all over loathe the Cowboys for being so (lack of a better word) decadent. All the glitz and giant scoreboards and dancing girls and whatever really turns a lot of people off.

ESPN Truth and Rumors: Buffalo and Vick
Astrojanitor replied to sharper802's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He didn't really win. There was that one monster season everyone is still obsessed over (which was like 5+ years ago--a lifetime in the NFL), but that's it. Low QB rating. Lots of sacks, fumbles and interceptions. This entire Vick thing revolves entirely around people have heard of him. Delhomme and Grossman are both Super Bowl QBs and available, where's the rush towards them? I mean if winning is the argument, those two have more successful seasons than Vick. -
Is American Idol Dead Without Simon?
Astrojanitor replied to wide_right's topic in Off the Wall Archives
you know, I don't really mind American Idol. There is something hypnotic about watching new celebrities be built live on tv. That being said, Simon makes the show since he is one of the few television personalities who are actually honest. there is something oddly comforting in knowing there is the one guy on stage who has no patience for nonsense. Culturally we need a bit of that vicious streak to keep us true. -
Holy god yes. it was like watching a bad third grade class play (with fart jokes. lots and lots of fart jokes). I do not think I have ever seen a host terrified before, but she was. During her monologue? Visibly shaking. It would be sad if I didn't resent her for wasting my precious tivo space.

I'm sure the clip will be up somewhere tomorrow, but for my fellow insomniacs.... The gimmick of the sketch was a sports talk television show featuring a former running back (Keenan Thompson) and an alien (played by Bill Hader). The hook is the one guy refuses to admit the other is an alien even though he does increasingly alien things (like scream and attack the camera). They throw to a field interview between the alien and Frank Reich (who is apparently the QB coach for the Colts, who knew?). Reich (aka Don Draper from Mad men) says some generic sports guy thing and gets attacked by the alien. Cut to Reich in the studio looking exactly like the alien. At one point they both have dinosaur tails. A viewer calls in and points out Frank Reich is now an alien. Aliens learn to spawn. Soon there are like 12 of them and wackiness ensues. Oddly enough a weaker moment in a genuinely funny episode (shocking knowing the deeps lows of SNL this season) but certainly surreal to us Bills nerds.
-
so claims Saturday Night Live. Anyone else feel too lazy to leave the house and see this tonight? No clips up yet, but an alien attacks Frank Reich, as played by Don Draper from "Mad Men." The next scene is Reich having been turned into said alien with large dinosaur-esque tail. Mildly funny but suitably weird.

Tebow Commercial Airing During Super Bowl
Astrojanitor replied to OrangeJuiceSimpson's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
wow. and to think some people hate Americans....... -
Lefevour has impressed me so far. That fumble recovery for the touchdown really stood out. At least 75% of the players gave up on the play but he had the presence to keep it going. He's had some nice throws and runs too. Tebow has looked like a slightly more retarded TE...all checkdowns and fumbles. Do find it odd that there is like no one at this game. It's like watching UFL.

Not really. It takes place in Brooklyn, so he has a little Brooklyn in there. Great movie by Wayne Wang. There's a completely improvised follow up called Blue in the Face which has its moments. But Smoke is a terrific little character piece.

Tebow Commercial Airing During Super Bowl
Astrojanitor replied to OrangeJuiceSimpson's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Have you heard the good news? Jesus loves dog torturers. Personally I do not even understand the purpose of having an anti-choice commercial. Does anyone honestly believe that an advert featuring a amateur football player will change minds about such a personal decision? It's a pointless exercise in rabble rousing. It's an ad that will annoy as much as anything. I actually think its selfish to politicize the Super Bowl through such an act. It's arguably the one day of the year we are able to escape the incessant left v. right bickering. Between his sucking up the Senior Bowl and this? Sounds like Tebow is a bortion. -
Miramax is essentially The Weinstein Company now. Miramax has been a Disney offshoot for about 3-4 years now. the name has been a marketing gimmick for a few years now more than anything. There Will Be Blood was co-produced by Paramount, for example. The Weinsteins are attempting to buy back the Miramax name...hopefully that goes down. The one Miramax film everyone forgets about is Smoke. Lost to time, but an amazing amazing film

Don't count out Trent Edwards
Astrojanitor replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree here. On of the biggest problems (if not the biggest) is TE not being much of a leader. the team has no faith in him at all. They see a guy give up once and he's done with that team forever. He does not seem to have the drive to be a starter. He's smart, has an arm...but is easily hurt and does not have that killer instinct a great QB should have. He's a backup...at best. But I would be horribly disappointed/frustrated if he returned as a starter. -
Zach Gallifinakis - Between Two Ferns...
Astrojanitor replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I love that show....or whatever they call web shows. Another great one to check out is The Michael Showalter Showalter. Similar tone, similarly funny. -
Don't try to bring up logic to Vick fans, all they see is that Madden cover and that time he won in Lambeau. He throws a lot of picks, is prone to fumbling, has a QB rating of 76, and really only one winning season. There's nothing there. Plus, you know, the whole scumbag issue. I would love to see McNabb here. He's an energetic and dynamic player, has been frequently brilliant/terminally unappreciated in Philly, and is known to be a mentor/leader. We get a new guy behind him to learn the ropes and spend the rest of our energy on fixing the O line and suddenly there's a little hope for the future.

now you've done it. We are trying to keep this chucklehead off everyone's radar. Though based on this list I like Gradkowski. He looked great in the 4-5 games he played.

I love the Sirius. Problem is "Underground Garage" has cost me hundreds of dollars in records. Also my soft spot for the Dead was indulged a little too much. Had to cancel, I was freebasing on aimless noodley guitar solos

It's just called Monterey Pop. It's your basic rock doc, nothing special film wise. What's amazing about it is seeing people's minds get blown by Otis. There's all these shots of very famous rock stars, I remember Mama Cass in particular, staring at Otis with their mouths open. People cared back then. A couple months ago my buddy's band played a show in town. On Thursdays the bar has music until 12 and then DJs until 2. So three bands from Rochester and Buffalo play and kill it. 5 people there. DJs show up and 100 people walk in the door. We're not talking Grandmaster Flash DJs either, just some chumps with a bunch of cds. I refuse to admit folks have always been this indifferent.

It's up to $28. I think I could use $28 more than telling people I'm a Bills fan.

If you have a PS3 there is a download game called "Zombie Tycoon." Pretty awesome, but only takes a couple hours to beat.

yeah I am! Sebadoh was amazing. Bake Sale was probably my soundtrack to high school. Other names for the list: Marc Ribot (really cool work on Tom Waits' Rain Dogs) Peter Green (those pre-Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac records are insane) Tom Verlaine (Television was one of the great guitar bands) Clay Tarver/Matt Sweeney (the two guitarists in obscure mid 90s band Chavez. You like guitars? You listen to Chavez) Danny Whitten (Crazy Horse is my ground zero for guitar work) Ace Frehley (c'mon, Ace is the dude) John Fahey (not really rock, but lawd that guy must have 12 fingers on his left hand) Lee Renaldo (Sonic Youth re-invented the guitar)

It's true. Our musical diet has been reduced to lullabies. people don't have the musical adventurism they once did. Ever seen the documentary on Monterey Pop? Seeing all those people grooving to Ravi Shankar, Otis Redding, and The Mamas and the Papas...it's inspiring to see some many people approach music with an open mind. Hazards of the corporate radio buyout, I guess. People are not really put into the position to hear different kinds of sounds. If the Beatles came out today they'd be a fringe indie pop band on Sub Pop. the kids couldn't handle the weirdness.

word. that PI call was insane.
