Green Day sellout is complete

actually it does mean something. Radioactivity is a concept record about picking up radio transmissions after the bombs drop. The album isn't necessarily musical; there is nothing on that album that could function as a single. but the album has a framing device of static and the sounds of a geiger counter. It's fully immersive in that it establishes the world the record takes place in before getting into the music. the music is also interrupted by static and far away voices. There is a different logic to the album since its purpose is to establish a mood, not necessarily to entertain. very cool strange and paranoid album. And I'm not going to get sucked into another one of these bitchouts. Dig the album or no, I could care less. I'm not in Kraftwerk--means nothing to me. You want to be obnoxious and start a fight? I'm not going to play that game with you. -

I would contend the most creative was/is Mike Watt. His work with Minutemen was so revolutionary guitar ended up mixed behind the bass. Off the top of my head I can not think of a single bass driven band...actually check that, bass driven rock and roll band, that predates Minutemen. Although it's cliche to say, Entwhistle was mind blowing as well. How The Who can claim to exist without he and Moon boggles my mind. -
yeah it was. but let me ask you this, did it inspire to listen to Anvil? I actually have a soft spot for that kind of 80s metal but don't think I have any interest in hearing an entire album. I have bought probably 150 records since I saw that doc (yes, I know I have a problem) and not one by Anvil. Wonder if that affects the nomination process. Like if Anvil became huge because of this would it have gotten more critical love?

Holy god yes! I've got radioactivity on the turntable right now. When people find out I'm a record collector they always ask what is the best (or more expensive) album I have. Just like how when they find out I study film they ask what the best movie is. But, I think like most people I don't really have a favorite band/album. Yet I always tell people it's radioactivity. Not just a really cool forward thinking album, but it creates a fully immersive logic and unique space. Its the only "concept" record I've heard that works like a film or radio drama or something. Just a really amazing/remarkable record. -
so says the guy who didn't know the difference between Extreme and XTC. Andy Partridge was the songwriter in XTC. Maybe you know him as the replacement bassist for Iron Maiden. No wait, Susan Dey replaced Dio in Sabbath, right?

It's hard to turn people on to bands like XTC since they are more of an album band. Their singles did not really stand out, but they made good records. Partridge thought of the album as the work; the songs are a small piece of the whole. Not unlike Radiohead, Can, Grateful Dead and so on. You might have better luck talking up the Dukes of the Stratosphere--more accessible

The best documentary picks are kind of a joke. Where's Anvil? Great movie that totally connected with the public. (500) Days of Summer deserved several nods Fantastic Mr Fox deserved a screenwriting nod too Since the Hangover won the Golden Globe I was surprised to see it lose a nom to the Blind Side.

It was Gary Cherone from Extreme that sang with/finished off Van Halen. Not XTC. -

Dude, when someone starts saying there has not been much good music in 30 years...it's best to just walk away. Can't argue music with those who care only for nostalgia. -
I would start with Crocodiles. It was their first album, more guitar driven, and very intense. It's almost like a post-punk Doors...only not as goofily pretentious. Plus the new reissue of the album has like 10 bonus tracks. Good value for the money. It is a seriously killer record though.

They also could not duplicate the sounds they were interested in. they were looking to explore the boundaries of pop music and felt the live dates were both in the way and a nuisance. Which I get, playing in front of people can be a pain in the ass -
Year One was terrible...but there are few things I have seen in my life that I hated more than GI Joe. I dug most of Observe and Report-but the incessant swearing wore me down after awhile. Killer soundtrack though.

In defense of XTC, the Beatles were primarily a studio band. Some bands are able to use the recording process in ways that treat the studio like an instrument. Psych and dub are both studio driven as well. A lot of times its like the difference between a play and a movie. A lot of musical experimentation does not always translate well to the stage. -
Pavement does an amazing cover of this song

Ah, Echo and the Bunnymen....nice. Very cool band...I've been obsessed with Crocodiles for probably 15 years. Huge record; love it.

I'm sorry, but I am positive you are wrong about the XTC thing. X were X, and that's it. They had a country side project as the Knitters and Bonebrake (who was an original member) later did time in the Flesheaters. But the only XTC was the english pop band. -

Exene Cervenka was in X not XTC. XTC were a really interesting, occasionally brilliant, English pop band from the late 70s to about 5 years ago. X were LA's best punk band. I really think Wild Gift is the greatest album to come out of that scene. -
I'm glad A Serious Man is getting some love. Really amazing film that just did not seem to click with the public at all.

Listen...you are barely literate. which fine, ditches still need digging. but this is a board that has its act together. We are intelligent fans who enjoy dissecting the minutia of the Bills franchise. the incoherent idiocy and tossing of nonsense is neither appreciated nor wanted. Go back to Billszone until you are ready to conduct yourself with class, intelligence and decency. -

This is all nonsense from apologists. Any person who does not realize the systematic torture and killing of animals for the use of illegal gambling is a crime is nothing but a worthless fool. In the wired world we live in cultural ignorance is not an excuse. Chalking this up to a "black thing" is both stupid and irresponsible. The best we can do is call this a Vick thing. -

None of this makes any sense I disagree completely with beastmode on what the Bills need behind center--and at times we spit insults to blow off steam when arguing about the future of the team. but we live in a civilization here. Incoherent idiotic ramblings accomplish exactly nothing. Also, can't harp on sentence structure when you spell like a mental patient. -
I'll tell you what man, I've made films, I've taught English and Film and TA'd screenwriting at Oklahoma State U. You want someone to give your script a once over, a totally impartial dude who knows structure, I'd be glad to take a quick look and give you a couple notes. Nothing fancy, just a set of eyes that knows what is going on. No biggie, I could care less about credit or whatever, I'm balls deep in thesis writing and could use something else to look at

+100000000 what an idiotic point. You should be ashamed comparing a couple cells in a woman to torturing animals to death
