  1. I'll go ahead and disagree. I thought Ratatouille and Wall-e were the absolute masterpieces Pixar produced. I'm a member of the Society of Animation Studies and those guys worship Ratatouille. Not that that necessarily means anything, but worth tossing out there. I thought Finding Nemo and Cars were more like vehicles for delivering happy meals than true movies. Thankfully the studio got past the need to pander to the kids with cuteness. These last 4 years Pixar has made films that are as good as anything out there. Granted cinematically we are in some lean times, but they still kind of kill it each summer.
  2. Dan "the Automator" and Prince Paul--their first album is great. it's funny, just today I was listening to the Jon Spencer album Acme and thinking I haven't heard anything from The Automator in years.
  3. who wants a round phone that communicates directly to facebook? Stupid idea. Though the girl in the Kin commercial is brutally gorgeous...so I guess I miss her.
  4. there's more than one 2 Live Crew song? Who knew?
  5. 1. Afghan Whigs: Black Love 2. Eat Skull: Sick to Death 3. Woods: At Echo Lake 4. Congos: heart of the Congos 5. Guided By Voices: Alien Lanes of course tomorrow I will have 5 totally different albums. Wait, let me add Red Red Meat: Bunny Gets Paid. So six albums, but this isn't an exact science
  6. The opening sequence (poker game) of the second episode was some of the most daring and exciting comedy I've seen on tv in some time. deadly funny and almost aggressively thought provoking.
  7. seriously. I know you were in a hurry to wish death on an old man and everything, but do try and pay attention to your subject.
  8. Habitual implies criminal activity being a common occurrence. There's always going to be an argument as to what "common" means--it's a very elastic word. He's habitually in trouble with the law, he's habitually a "person of interest" in criminal cases....unfortunately he's also habitually rich enough to buy himself out of trouble. For my money a sure sign of Vick being a habitual criminal is the varied amount of offenses. It's not like Big Ben's annual rape trial (which is it's own habitual little problem), Vick has issues with drugs, sex, gambling and violence. That signifies a deeply troubled mindset. It's a borderline sociopathic (not really a word, but whatever) worldview that will end with this guy doing more jail time at some point in the future.
  9. A list I found online regarding Vick's record with the police: # Weed/marijuana hidden in the bottom of a water bottle at the Miami airport. # Drug raids at a house he owned (which lead to fed finding a... ) # Dog fighting ring and animal cruelty towards 60 dogs in a house he owned. # Settled a lawsuit filed by a former girlfriend who said he knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease. # Vick surrounded himself with unsavory associates, two with criminal records for drug trafficking. # Two friends of Vick pocketed someone's fancy watch at the Atlanta airport, the watch's owner said a Falcons executive offered him money to keep Vick's name out of a police report. add of course last this latest nonsense. Seems pretty habitual to me.
  10. That is an unbelievably killer tune. I bought the single on Record Store Day and have been hounding everyone I know about it since. The only downside--as little as it is--is the newly recorded vocals. If Mick's part was recorded in 71 as well this would be the sleaziest song ever. Now it's just incredibly awesome.
  11. everything here is absolutely right. I apologize ahead of time for the uptight conservatives who are going to start shrieking at you
  12. Well then let me +1 that as well. Daniel Johnston is one of the best and nobody could ever say enough nice things about Jonathan Richman
  13. Bioshock is my all-time favorite. Also love the tecmo bowl download.
  14. +1 on the Shaggs avatar
  15. Right? Totally underrated record. I do wish it was a little rougher sounding, but those are some great songs. Another similar underrated gem is Soul Asylum's Horse They Rode In On. Jangly and drunken rock and roll....that should also be a little rougher sounding.
  16. Right, BP destroyed the gulf so US taxpayers should pay for it. makes sense, because I'm sure you'd calmly deal with Obama saying tax dollars will be used to scrub pelicans. How dare a corporation be held responsible for its actions? It's socialism I tell you! Rush is right!
  17. Bob Mould is pretty amazing. Husker Du is a top 5 band of mine...Sugar was pretty great too. Always found the solo stuff a little hit or miss. the electronic stuff, in particular, just drove me nuts. For those Mould fans, the new Grant Hart solo album is killer. In fact I may like the new Grant hart more than any of Mould's solo jams.
  18. yeah, I agree. the topic line should have been different, but whatever. I've seen the movie, it's fairly entertaining and certainly not racist in any way whatsoever. Blaxploitation films would try to reclaim that negative language in much the same way good hip hop did. There were a half dozen or so blaxploitation films that dropped n-bombs in the title.
  19. all of this is true. But baby steps and all. You can get a decent enough TT for about $125 at any Best Buy type store. If you have a receiver and speakers a half step above nice you'll be doing all right until you become stuffed with money. I've been a hardcore vinyl only snob for about 10 years now and have yet to pony up for one of those high octane setups. I can't wait to....but, y'know. Maybe when my employment status upgrades from fitful to kinda. I run an old mid level Pioneer through an okayish receiver and some who cares level speakers. Last night I listened to the reissue of Disintegration by The Cure and it almost blew my face off. You can make do with the cheap stuff. Also: you should buy the reissue of Disintegration. That is a dense dense record that will never sound right on digital.
  20. the Sony PS series is in that price range, but they have a bad habit of losing speed. Mine kicked down to about 28 rpm making every singer ever sound like Johnny Cash with a stroke. it's some mechanical issue that is essentially unfixable. You should get a couple years out of one though. The USB turntables are okay, but sound a bit tinny. Also rarely belt driven. Never ever buy a turntable that is not belt driven. For my money Pioneer puts out the best cheap turn tables. Also make sure whatever you buy has a built-in preamp...makes life easier.
  21. That sequence on the boat is one of the best shot/edited setpieces I have ever seen. Even though I was sure what was going to happen, the way they were able to build doubt and dread is awe inspiring. Such a brilliant brilliant show. Drag the season is over this sunday.
  22. I didn't say it's wrong, I said I have no patience for it.
  23. as opposed to the incredibly hurt feelings of this rachel nichols person? If giving a crap was a pre-requisite none of the conversation would happen "off the wall" of a Buffalo Bills fan site. This is about as much of a "who gives a ****" forum that could possibly exist.
  24. I have never heard the name Rachel Nichols before, but I'll still add any Fox News reader to the punch list. All gorgeous busty blondes, but I have no patience for conservatives. They start ranting about gay marriage and taxes and my penis goes "mehhhh."
  25. As far as live albums go I'll go one better and say it's the bootlegs albums that really kill. When a band knows their performance is being preserved they tend to play it a little safe. I have these bootleg performances by the Cramps, Bad Brains and Gas Huffer on vinyl that will melt your face. So much more alive than my favorite official live albums (Grateful Dead's Europe 72 and War's live album which is called something stupid like War Live or whatever). Recently I've really been digging my old Grant Lee Buffalo cds. Which is weird since I normally both don't like cds or Grant Lee Buffalo. But their melodramatic gothic folk thing has been speaking to me these days.
