I only saw the Boss once, but I was literally in the last row of the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. It was neat seeing him and everything....but kind of hard to get super excited about the singing dot half a mile away

I vote for Frank Black and/or Robyn Hitchcock

1983 made Prince king...he just doesn't want to flaunt it. It makes all other music feel bad

If You Had the World's Crappiest iPod......
Astrojanitor replied to WotAGuy's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Jacuzzi Boys are on the turntable right now--pretty great record. It;s like a 1960s style sloppy garage rock. Saw them play with Marah last month. Hadn't heard of them before and they were kind of blown off the stage by Marah. Also sort of douchey as people. Record's good though. The Male Bonding record is awesome. Frantic buzzsaw guitar rock. Remind me a bit of Husker Du actually. Ariel Pink is a real noisy lo-fi pop. It's an odd record, but I like it a lot. It's like listening to an AM pop station in 1974...but with terrible reception. So I read a couple music blogs every day (stereogum and pitchfork, mostly). I also look through the record lists for various distros (current favorites: Florida's Dying, Midheaven, Armageddon Shop, Dusty Groove) and labels (current favorites: In The Red, Not Not Fun, Drag City, Siltbreeze) and just buy whatever sounds interesting. Nothing's better than getting some weird record nobody's ever heard of and have it blow your hair back. Of course yesterday I had -$37 in checking....someday my free time and obsessiveness will be used for something productive. -
If You Had the World's Crappiest iPod......

turns out 3 of them did. So now my crappy ipod can have the new Jacuzzi Boys, Male Bonding, and Ariel Pink albums. In my next life I'm going to be far less into music. Seriously, who the !@#$ are those bands? -
I'm with you man, Prince says the internet is over the internet is over. No one benefits from doubting Prince.

There was a local band here in Rochester called Muler who put on a show in March of 1999 that is still talked about in hushed tones amongst my friends. Just an insane, beautiful, perfect show. It was essentially a drunken riot with guitars...maybe 10 people in the crowd. Got to love a band that will bring that kind of action to even just a handful of chumps. The Cramps in Feb 1998 in Buffalo was a facemelter. Bomboras were opening back when they were doing that whole day-glo skeleton thing Guided By Voices...any of the many times I saw GBV were perfect. Rocket From The Tombs in Cleveland 2003. RFTT were this band that played a bit in the early 70s, but never recorded an album. They were famous for half the band taking half the songs and forming Pere Ubu with them. The other half took the other half and became the Dead Boys. First Pere Ubu and Dead Boys albums are mainly Rocket From The Tombs songs. Was like being kicked in the head. Honorable mention: Royla Trux, The Frogs, US Maple, Arab On Radar. Chavez, Mannequin Men, Spider Bags, Marah, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Oddly I don't think I have ever seen a good arena show or a good hip hop show.

Governator cuts CA State Workers to minimum wage
Astrojanitor replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
well they aren't working people, are they? That explains the lack of budget. Why punish those who have nothing to do with the problem while rewarding the incompetent? -

Governator cuts CA State Workers to minimum wage
Astrojanitor replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
why would you celebrate his cutting the salaries of working people in half because the government can't get it's act together? You ever try living on minimum wage? It's like $13-14K a year. Now he cuts the state congressmen and state senators wages to that and I applaud. Now he's just ruining lives because a bunch of politicians refuse to do their jobs -
I knew the show was doing pretty low numbers. Luckily I find jay Leno to be an obnoxious enough personality for this to be good news. Also, you know, the irony. I can see Comcast trying to force NBC is starting over from scratch and attempting to redefine the property. Can't imagine who'd be up for the job...but that's why I'm not in show business. Let's start spreading the rumor it'll be Neil Hamburger

If You Had the World's Crappiest iPod......

god I love Gram Parsons so much. In 1994 the mother of my closest friend gave me a bunch of lps in return for introducing her to Robert Forster and telling her some Nixon stories. Weird but true. Gilded Palace of Sin and GP were two of those LPs. Both of those records have been some of the defining music of my life. -

i don't know, my high school pot dealer grew it in his bedroom closet. I saw his set up once--didn't notice any armed Mexicans milling about -
Took my 3 yr old little girl to see Toy Story 3
Astrojanitor replied to HelloNewman's topic in Off the Wall Archives
There are far sadder things about my last girlfriend.... But I agree with you about Ratatouille. I think there are aesthetic and narrative expectations for "family" films and folks tend to freak out when they don't fit into the pre-conceived mold. I found it so unsettling that parents were flipping out about Where the Wild Things Are and Fantastic Mr Fox, but Tooth Fairy and Spy Next Door skate. I find Tooth Fairy infinitely more offensive then kids getting a little frightened by a bunch of furry monsters running about. -

The follow up trouble shooting questions I would always ask is: only the mastercode will let you bypass, if you've set up more than one code in your panel try the other ones. Also double check the inability to bypass by trying different zone numbers. The installers are not always so good at giving an accurate zone list. What works for me sometimes is to do a hard reset to clear the panel then giving it a second shot. reset is Code+1+code+1
-
Most honeywell systems have the same bypass sequence, so hopefully this works: when you bypass the alarm needs to be disarmed first. code+6+zone number. zone numbers are always 2 digit, so if its zone 2 you want to bypass press code+6+02. When you disarm the system the zone will automatically unbypass.
-
Shunt? I'm working at ADT these days and have piles of troubleshooting paperwork on these alarms systems, but I've never heard shunt before. Are you trying to bypass a zone or is it something more complicated than that?

Nobody Talks About Fitz in this race, why not?
Astrojanitor replied to JustMaxx's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I really like this. the hatred for Fitz is mostly symbolic, isn't it? Starting Fitz fully admits the great white hopes are hopeless. That is a really great analysis....I think you are 100% right. never occurred to me before, but I really think you've nailed it. -
Took my 3 yr old little girl to see Toy Story 3
Astrojanitor replied to HelloNewman's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I think if nothing else Ratatouille is saved by the scene with the food critic eating remy's food for the first time. The immediate quick cut back to his childhood and the look on his face as these memories come rushing back is a beautifully quiet and affecting moment. More than that it's the kind of filmmaking so-called serious adult films would never attempt. The film just slows down and lets the moment happen--brilliant sequence. i took my 6 year old nephew to see Wall-E and he was bored spitless. I have no idea why I am so consistently disappointed in a 6 year olds inability to appreciate great art, but I am. Took my last girlfriend to see Up and she was bored spitless. And well, see above I guess.
