  1. My housemate is opening up for them in October for like the third time. it's a good gig as the topes always pack the place. But frankly I'm totally sick of the isotopes. They drove their gimmick into the ground. I feel like I've seen the same show like ten times. one of those bands that have been kicking around here forever but never really tried to do anything or really push themselves at all.
  2. Man, i love that whole Dead channel. I could listen to those shows from 67-74 all day long. Oddly enough I openly despise all jam bands, but if the Dead play a version of Dark Star that lasts under 15 minutes I am sorely disappointed.
  3. I agree with about half of this. Di caprio has been making the same face for about 8 or so years now. he's falling into the Charlize Theron, Jennifer connolly killjoy trap. Though I will never understand not loving The Dark Knight. Inception is pretty great (my ripoff claim: Dark City...but really this kind of film has its roots in Un Chien Andalou which is from like 1928 or so). My only real problem with the film was too much exposition. I felt like things were getting explained to death without putting enough of the dream logic into context. Although I don't care for it as a film, I do love how The Matrix wallowed in philosophic questions. Inception does not do that nearly enough in favor of making sure the audience isn't lost. But yeah, I was really nice to pay $10 and NOT have my intelligence insulted.
  4. Ha! that gig was actually my last date with my first girlfriend. I realized if she could like that nonsense I could probably do a lot better. I was shallow then....haven't ended a relationship over music since I was 30
  5. As a recovering Okie I can assure you that is still the most reasonable thing they have ever shown on the news. This made up i-dosing thing is nothing compared to their paranoia over the Insane Clown Posse, atheist message in The Golden Compass, and the possibility of a gay American Idol.
  6. i think that's in Petey Wheatstraw. I love how in the first Dolemite film the punches and kicks miss by a minimum of a foot and a half. I saw Dolemite on the big screen once--everything that looks kind of obvious watching at home becomes borderline surreal when 60 ft tall
  7. Black Dynamite is hilarious. I used to show my intro to film students The Avenging Disco Godfather. The cool kids would lose their minds during the last 20 minutes.
  8. My god you make sense....how dare you interrupt the self congratulatory circle jerk with a rational world view? Now start shaking your fist, traitor!
  9. oh man, Alex Chilton! I can't believe I've forgotten about Alex Chilton! Think I'm still in denial--there's my excuse
  10. ....oops, I thought that was another thread about LeBron
  11. http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2010/07...kar-dead-at-70/ As a writer: one of the most interesting of the last 50 years. People don't give comic writers a lot of credit--but Harvey told some serious truths As a Letterman guest: Top three. hands down. One of the reasons why late night was more fun in the 80s. American Splendor: Truly amazing film that not enough people talk about. An interesting dude who will be missed. There's not enough interesting out there, we don't need to be losing guys like Pekar
  12. I heard about that. Mick Hucknell...I don't get it. What I find interesting about the reunion is the role of Ronnie Laine will be played by Glenn Matlock from the Sex Pistols. That may be something. Be Here To Love Me is amazing. never expected him to be as nerdy as he was. Heartbreaking and funny in some weird ways. Just got a double live LP of his last week. A deadly live performer. And shame on me for not saying Vern Gosdin and Brian Jones
  13. he's been dead to me since the Faces broke up
  14. I forgot about Nikki Sudden, Del Shannon and Dennis Wilson
  15. Townes Van Zandt Gram Parsons Johnny Thunders Lux Interior Ian Curtis Johnny/Joey/Dee Dee Ramone Jerry Garcia John Fahey Otis Redding Rowland S Howard Eddie Hazel
  16. For some insane reason I saw Billy Joel in like 1993. Holy god. As much as I despise Billy Joel, live he's even worse. There were a lot of empty Applebees in Syracuse that night.
  17. I totally agree. I find most of the Steely Dan back catalog to sound like the theme song to a terrible 80s sitcom. But I kind of dig Katy Lied.
  18. The first Perry album was Infinity which came out in 1978. He did a tour with them in Fall of 1977. And I have no idea why I know this, but for some reason I do.
  19. I agree totally. Hazards of twitter though, no room for context.
  20. Oar is the soundtrack to every weird day
  21. You're right man, they are mostly in jail for symbolism. Now Charlie is clearly a lunatic and probably shouldn't be out walking around. But the followers are just weak and dumb. But now they are weak, dumb and elderly. I kind of don't care one way or the other, but I certainly would be fine with Van Houten getting out. I can tell you I did think Atkins should have been able to spend her last week outside the walls. Not a whole lot of damage she could have done when she wasn't able to move.
  22. If they didn't let Susan Atkins out on her deathbed none of those people will ever see the sun again. it's weird how the crime still captures the public imagination. I'll never forget buying the Bobby Beausoleil vinyl box set a couple years ago and being lectured by the nerd at the record store about supporting murderers. You don't have a problem stocking it, but buying it is an issue? Chumps.
  23. apparently this guy I have never heard of makes my annual salary after every basket. yeah man, that masters degree was totally worth it. I'm going to go drink now.
  24. I've thought of a few more: Iggy Pop playing this dirt race track in Syracuse. It was this stupid all day festival in 1997 featuring nonsense like Sponge and Bloodhound Gang. We he hit the stage the dirt track was a mud track. Totally disgusting. So he has the few leftovers of crowd just hang out on stage while he played. Being 19 or 20 and being like 5 feet away from Iggy during a heavy on Raw Power (cd had just been reissued, I remember) set? Totally amazing. For pure rock fury I once saw new Bomb Turks/ Zen Guerilla/Supersuckers/Hellacopters all play together. lead singer of the new Bomb Turks gave me a concussion by banging a tambourine against the side of my head. Later that night I got a ticket from playing Alice Cooper records too loud outside my house. Good times. Anyone who has had the opportunity to see Neurosis knows I don't need to say a word about how amazing they are live The first time I saw Unsane I thought I may die. Scary at the time, but once I got home safely pretty exciting. Same goes for Murder City Devils. I skipped my college graduation in order to see the Melvins w/ Folk Implosion. Arguably the only good decision I've made. Johnny Cash at the Highland Bowl in 1995. The most shirtless gig I have ever been to. not in a good way. Any of those real early Drive By Truckers gigs. Nothing like seeing a now famous band in front of 12 people. I once saw a Pogues cover band called Boys From County Hell who were actually better than the Pogues. probably because they could stand and talk at the same time, By my estimation I have seen roughly 2500-3000 bands in my life. I could go on for many many pages
  25. It was either fall of 1999 or spring of 2000. I can narrow it down based only on remembering my then-girlfriend's apartment. I do remember it being the first tour of the reunited E Street Band. I also remember my friends and I could not even get tickets next to each other which killed the fun that much more. arena shows...I just don't get it.
